Perhaps the most composed mind to have graced Pakistan cricket in recent times, Misbah-ul-Haq remains as the most under-appreciated cricketer in Pakistan’s history. It took a while for the cricketing lovers of Pakistan to fall in love with Misbah. Let’s say it wasn’t love at first-sight, but an arranged marriage, Misbah grew on the people, slowly but surely.

The most remarkable aspect about Kaptaan-ul-Haq is his unflappable temperament. It showed in his batting, which reached unprecedented levels of consistency from 2011 till the 2015 World Cup and his captaincy, which helped uplift Pakistan from the depths of the spot-fixing saga which occurred in 2010, England. Fastest and highest records I understand. but to celebrate records like "Second in this list, was never clean bowled, is second captain to win Asia cup" is just desperate.

What about the big one - never scored an ODI hundred?

 

The highest batting average by a Pakistani Captain. If it means test then there was a certain Javed Miandad who's average never fall below 50 in his entire career.

batting avg is high bcz he wasnt facing as lethal bowlers as yousuf,inzi, javed miandad faced in the past. the pitches also werent batting friendly as they are now. misbah is a good batsman but to make him out better than javed or even inzi is atrocious.

1) Misbah's technique isn't actually rock solid, like a lot of our batsmen he moves across quite a lot and gets opened up more than most players by outswingers. He has overcome it and despite that he has succeeded, but that's a basic flaw here

2) Our greatest captain? Nope, not even close. But pretty good nonetheless

3) The controversy thing is a bit strange. Controversies unless it's something like matchfixing are pretty much incidental to the match. Yes there were no controversies, so what? We had some brilliant successes (Tests v England, Australia) and some dismal failures. Overall it was a net positive, solid effort from Misbah. As a Test captain, overall excellent. As a one-day captain, ordinary--nothing special, but with a couple of achievements

As always, I think Misbah's fans and critics alike go too far. Neither is he as unique in his calmness etc as is proclaimed--we've had pretty calm cool players like Ijaz Ahmed, Saeed Anwar, Abdul-Razzaq, Inzamam-ul-Haq too. And Misbah, while cool and calm, did have a LOT of bizarre dismissals that were usually brainfarts at the wrong time. Hence no century. I don't mind it--I loved his tuk-tuk-bang batsmanship style anmd I think he was an A-minus batsman for us

Nor is he as defensive and stodgy as his critics claimed--for a "slow" player he has a number of really fast innings pretty regularly when needed, and it's ridiculous to single him out as the dreariest captain we've had.

 

no one here is saying he is better than those guys, only saying near retirement his avg was better compared to other legends who tend to loose touch and get out of form e.g Ponting, Lara, Inzi, Moyo

 

^in short, Misbah neither a savior not a bane. Just a solid, steady captain who was not AS different from his peers as either his critics or fans usually say

but for point 3, well he is the best Test captain stat wise but for me he is yet to play a Test Series in England and Australia

 

Someone please make the madness stop. He has retired. Stop angering anti-Misbah posters with these extravagant, exaggerated ideals about Misbah which are half made up.

 

They have already chose a position by way of being anti Misbah before reading the information and it isn't the OPs responsibility to take into account the emotional/psychological state of posters before creating threads.

Reasonable description of his ODI captaincy but doesn't tell the full story of his test captaincy. Bar the inexcusable test loss to Zimbabwe his test record is superior to most of his peers. Although like dashing_man says the lack of series in England/Australia means we can't get the complete picture BUT he could only play what was infront of him.

 

Over exaggerated and misrepresented points to make Misbah look far better than he is. Also lol legend, that's an insult to all legends.

This is a good achievement even if it was in Pakistan. One of Pakistan's finest victories and he used the spin bowlers well. Although, I'd hardly call UAE "out of Pakistan."

Tests or ODIs? Or both? This is a solid achievement, but it's easy to do when you're the only mainstay in the team and you keep chopping and changing batsmen around. Yes, I agree, other batsmen did not take an opportunity, but it's important to note that no one had as long of a run as he did. I think averages would tell a better story.

T20s are relatively new. Pretty useless IMO.

In what format? If it's ODIs, it's not that useful tbh because the game is changing and Misbah played at snail's pace. It can be argued (not that it is fact) that Misbah had the ability to get his average up because he played so slowly, therefore taking less risks. Is a B-grade batsmen, aka solid.

Another crap stat to make Misbah look good. So he did it once. In test cricket. Who cares. We were 460/3 no? We would've won anyway.

Yep, Tests is certainly a valid position. The 3-0 defeat in South Africa a blot but just about everybody in South Africa bar Aussies get blown away

I would still rank Imran Khan higher but Misbah comes 2nd in Tests

 

Well Imran also never won a Test Series in South Africa but I get your point. Let's hope he gets a tour of Australia and England in the coming years

Here's the difference :

Afridi, in his prime, sets a record for the fastest ODI century.
Misbah, in the twilight of his career, sets a record for the fastest Test century.

Go figure.

 

It's amazing how afridi's name is brought up in any Misbah debate.

 

The only legend who couldn't score an ODI century as a specialist batsman. Another record.

 

He's not a legend, he may have been if he played for a longer period of time before 2007 and we saw a younger Misbah but I'd have him up there, top player and a brilliant personality.

 

And vice versa.

It just seem to be that the 'Legend' term is being thrown out far too 'cheaply' to put it that way.

Misbah-ul-haq is not a legend, but neither is Shahid Khan Afridi contrary to what his delusional fanboys believe.

I find it nauseating how someone can laugh at someone else for calling MUH a legend while they themselves display stupidity of epic proportions by calling SKA a legend.

Sorry, but that just sounds wrong because they're putting a hack who performed once in a blue moon in the category only Pakistan's finest players belong to.

 

I think with afridi it's the legendary performances , because whenever he did fire it was a unforgettable performance . (37 ball hundred, 6 wickets v aus in odi, Kanpur, t20 wc win, recent MOTM performances prior to wc etc etc.) with Misbah it's hard to remember any defining innings - I can recall the 90odd not out in nz few years ago when he chased it down but not too many.

 

Misbah remained captain for so long not because of the results the team produced but only because PCB could not find any other half decent choice to replace him. Otherwise he would have gone long ago if we had an experienced player and a regular performer across all formats.

Misbah was just lucky he was surrounded by inexperienced blokes, an Afridi who was inconsistent and TTFs like Maliks and Akmals etc.

Rest of the team was too busy plotting various other parallel stuff.

 

Nice person and a decent cricketer but nowhere near a legend.Afridi at his peak was an ODI legend.
