Asad Shafiq has scored two fourth-innings centuries in the last year, both in losses in a day-night Test. He scored 137 at the Gabba last year in a chase of 490. Pakistan lost that Test by 40 runs. In Dubai, Pakistan lost by 68 runs, chasing 317. If they were successfully chased down, both would have been fourth-innings records: the highest successful chase in Tests and the highest successful chase in UAE respectively. No other batsman has more than one century in chases in the last year. He has two fifties in the fourth innings and Pakistan lost those Tests as well: Galle in 2012 and Johannesburg in 2012-13.

Shafiq's fourth-innings average of 45.35 is his highest among the four innings of a Test. His two centuries in chases are also the joint second most among Pakistan batsmen, behind Younis Khan's five. Ijaz Ahmed and Javed Miandad also have two. Shafiq was averaging just 17.20 in ten Test innings this year before the century in Dubai. He had not hit a single fifty, with a highest score of 39. With this century, he has now scored Test hundreds in each year since 2011.

Means he is mentally weak. Whenever he is left alone to do the job he fails every time.

The guy is extremely lucky... always fails miserably for most part of a series but puts on a good performance in one innings to save his place.

If the target was 250 he would have been out for single figures.

It was a typical Tendulkar sought of Knock

Any body who missed Tendu play just watch Shafiq play and imagine Shafiq playing that knock 1 time in 15 innings, the only difference would be Tendu would do it 2-3 times but in the end he would do what Shafiq does,So yeh we've got an inconsistent yet consistent Tendulkar.

    Shafiq is a joke.
He's a waste of space. By no means a match winner. When going gets tough he bails out.

There's a reason why he made runs in Australia and today. The match was as good as gone hence he decided to play when pressure was totally off. When they had a realistic chance of winning in those games he again bottled it

We should have won at the Gabba,Atleast in today's match there was no false hope which was good. in Australia 40 runs definitely was reachable and with 2 wickets left,I don't like players that give false hope.

No batsman alone chases totals in fourth innings and makes up for the whole team's pathetic batting. In Shafiq, you have one of the top batsmen as far as fourth innings is concerned playing for one of the worst fourth innings team.

He's clearly like Sachin of Pakistan. His hundreds make us lose games.

He certainly is a master of scoring useless hundreds and making some soft runs to keep his spot for next 10 innings.

And apart from his 100's, the guy is the worst I've seen when it comes to bat with tail. Have no sense to bat with last 4. I mean in what world do you keep giving tail enders 5 balls an over to face and hope to chase and win a game?

    Dont get it.

People bash Azhar for having a supposedly poor 4th innings record, Shafiq hits 2 4th innings tons in a year and gets bashed because he did so from a hopeless position lol.

Guy scored a 100, point the blame at the players who didnt turn up.

hes ordinary. not great, not terrible. but his performances have worsened I the past couple of years apart from the odd showing that has secured his place.

there are players with far more potential that should have been tried ahead of him.

Would be fine if he was consistent. At the moment he goes missing when the pressure is on and then cashes in when his place in the team is insecure and the runs don't really matter to anyone.

He's getting more inconsistent at a time when he needs to step up. He isn't a 'youngster' anymore. Him and Azhar are the senior most players in the team.

He's a decent enough No 5. He's a limited batsman otherwise though. Why expect him to do anything beyond his abilities. If there's a better batsman than him, Why isn't he in the side ?

The Tail still have to pitch in and bat. Amir's regressed as a batsman (he was showing potential pre-ban). Wahab's got some talent but he never seems to stick around as well.

The great chases where one batsman takes a team across the line have to do with the support that is given to them too. at 53/5, The match was already done. Credit to Asad and to Sarfaraz to take it close enough that a result would be a possibility.

These times, the tailenders have to come to stick around and not lose their wickets.
