KARACHI: Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Shaharyar Mohammad Khan has admitted that the decision to appoint Azhar Ali as ODI skipper was ‘a failed experiment’.

In a TV show on Tuesday, he said that on the recommendation of captain, coach, authorities in PCB, selectors, chief selectors and senior players, Azhar was appointed the ODI captain, however, he added that the appointment was not his decision.

Shaharyar said that Ali was a defensive captain; his personality did not match the likes of Imran Khan and Misbahul Haq, hence he asked him to step down from the ODI captaincy in favour of Sarfaraz Ahmed as it was adversely affecting his batting performance.

He informed that Ali was dejected from the decision and requested the board to also relieve him from the vice-captaincy of the Test team - his request was accepted.

On March 31 2015, Shaharyar announced to give ODI captaincy to Ali after Misbahul Haq`s retirement.

In his first tour as ODI captain, Bangladesh whitewashed Pakistan by 3-0. Ali captained the greenshirts in 31 ODI matches - of which he won 12 and lost 18.

Uncle Sherry Khuda ka wasta hai yaar, let a day go by without opening your mouth in media.

It doesn't mean you must have to say something whenever mic come at your face.

On contrary, a bit amazed he didn't bring up India and MOU subject.

He only makes himself look bad with statements like these. You can tell he's a diplomat rather than a leader because he made a choice based on a consensus rather than on the facts. Sarfaraz was the obvious choice.

Always knew Azhar Ali was asked to step down and this whole resignation drama was just to save face of Azhar. Stuck to the post of captaincy like a parasite like every other Pakistani player. LOL.

Being captain of the side give them assurity that they would be drop from the side as long as they're leading the team.

What I dislike the most about Azhar was his usual defeatist attitude.

His defeatist attitude was just pathetic. Absolutely disgusting. Worst player to captain Pakistan after MoYo. Also, goes on to show their innate selfishness and them being parasites.

No captain in Pakistan resigns willingly. The so-called resignation of Hafeez as T20 captain in 2014 was a face-saving drama as well.

When you are admitting that you are incompetent than you should've left PCB long time back. Its nothing but his age is showing a sign of attention seeking. I had the opportunity to meet him once in Karachi, He is just a diplomat, He has no clue about cricket.

All those having digs at Azhar need to understand that he's one of those guys who's got a never give up attitude to his game. Even though it was obvious to see that he's doing badly I guess in his part he believed that he could improve. If a person gives up then its like saying you know you can't get better. A person with a quitter mentality never gets better.
Ultimately the correct decision was made to resign however who knows how hard the guy tried to improve his captaincy. Just wasn't meant to be.

Also all those saying Sarfraz is a better captain need to hold their judgement back for a bit. The way his captaincy lost the 2nd match vs Windies shows that he's clueless in pressure situations too (fact: Azhar won 3-0 against this side whilst Sarfraz won 2-1).
Let Sarfraz play a year or so as captain then judge. I'm certain people will be after his neck too very soon.
