Karachi: Defending Waqar Younis' appointment as Pakistan coach despite allegations of match fixing against him, PCB chairman Ejaz Butt said all those fined on the basis of Justice Malik Qayyum's inquiry report 10 years ago have been cleared for national duties now.

Butt said the services and players like Waqar Younis, Wasim Akram or Ijaz Ahmed are being utilised after clearance and recovery of fines.

"Ten years have passed since the Malik Qayyum report came out and they have paid their fines and the ICC also has no objection to them being given responsibilities by the board," Butt told reporters in Islamabad.

Some former players have criticised the board for appointing those players on key positions despite being named in the Qayyum match-fixing inquiry report.

Waqar, Wasim, Aaqib Javed, Saeed Anwar were among those who the Qayyum committee fined for not cooperating with the inquiry that lasted for some 18 months.

The Qayyum commission also recommended life bans on former captain, Salim Malik and pace bowler, Ata-ur-Rehman.

Butt disclosed that Waqar would be paid around USD 7650 monthly salary besides other perks.

"We think that is a reasonable amount we are paying for his services since the former Pakistan coach, Bob Woolmer was paid around Rs 1.7 million a month by the board," Butt added.

Waqar Younis to get 7,650 dollars per month as Pak coach

Islamabad, Mar.7 (ANI): The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has acquired the services of former fast bowler Waqar Younis as the coach of the national team on a hefty package of 650,000 rupees (7,650 dollars) per month.

Talking to media persons here, PCB chairman Ijaz Butt said Younis has been given a contract till December 2011.

Butt said names of former left-arm fast bowler Wasim Akram along with some foreigners were also in consideration for the coach's job but the board zeroed in on Younis.

"We had a choice between Younis and Wasim Akram, but since Akram was busy with his commitments in media, we decided to appoint Younis as the new coach" The Dawn quoted Butt, as saying.

"Foreign coaches were demanding big money and were willing to work with our team only when its touring some other country. This was not acceptable to us," he added.

Younis will be replacing Intikhab Alam, who has been appointed the director cricket academies.

Butt said Alam, a former test spinner, will groom youngsters in cricket academies at Lahore and Karachi.

"Soon, we will have two more academies in Multan and Islamabad and Alam's services will be utilized in all these four academies," he added.

That's about £5,000 a month. It doesnt sound like a lot for an national team coach.

Lol, I make more than him, and we are talking about the coaching position of an international team.

I honestly cannot see why his salary has to float around in the media and be up for debate. Granted that 7.000 is a lot of money for people living in Pakistan, but he is settled in Sydney, where the standard of earning probably is more like what we earn here in Europe.

That's less than 100 grand per year. Not very hefty at all.

Now that is sad! There are people in Pakistan that make more money while working for decent size companies and lets not forget PCB has plenty of money even if they like to cry about being broke all the time.
