One question that my friends kept asking me over and over again during the World Cup was regarding missing players. They would say we know about the 3 who are banned but where's Malik, where's Rana, where's Yousuf, where's Nazir, etc.

It got me to thinking. How good would a team can we make from all the missing players? Please choose a playing XI that doesn't include Butt, Asif and Aamer or any of the World Cup squad. The WC squad was...

Shahid Afridi, Misbah-ul-Haq, Mohammad Hafeez, Ahmed Shehzad, Kamran Akmal, Younus Khan, Asad Shafiq, Umar Akmal, Abdul Razzaq, Abdur Rehman, Saeed Ajmal, Shoaib Akhtar, Wahab Riaz, Umar Gul, Junaid Khan.

Also you can consider Malik and Rana. So what's your XI?

I decided to stick with players who've played for Pakistan and see what I could come up with...

Imran Nazir - Nazir as always would be hit and miss but considering how deep this team bats, he's a risk worth taking.

Nasir Jamshed - Nasir has been dismissed without getting a real chance. I know his fitness is suspect but he's a real batting talent. If Nazir fails, Jamshed will get them.

Azhar Ali - Since the opening pair is so explosive you need someone like Azhar to steady the ship. Plus Azhar's domestic record in one day games is brilliant.

Shoaib Malik (c) - Love him or loathe him, when he's in form he's one of the best ODI batsmen in the world.

Mohammad Yousuf - Is he past it or isnt he? I think he still has a year left in him.

Sarfaraz Ahmed (wk) - A wicketkeeper who can bat, not slog but actually bat. Many people think he should be stood in Mo Salman's shoes right now.

Rana Naved - These days Rana is good enough to bat at 7, he's one of the best death bowlers in the world and if the new ball is moving then say goodbye to your openers. But is his fitness still up to standard?

Mansoor Amjad - Every team needs a legspinner, it's a shame Imran Tahir was wasted but let's not do the same to Mansoor. Also he can hit it big and is a proper all-rounder

Mohammad Talha - Fastest bowler left in Pakistan cricket and can hit the ball well too

Sohail Khan - Second fastest bowler in Pakistan cricket and deserves a chance

Mohammad Irfan - Didn't have the best of debuts but a near 7 foot fast bowler bowling in the 80s deserves another go. Let's see what he's like without jetlag and cramp

Taufeeq and Farhat is big no no. Only player I would possibly repalce from that team is Mansoor with kaneria, I feel Kaneria is far better bowler but I do hope Mansoor is given chance in future. Rest from your list are still unproven and pretty sure will/are or might get a chance to prove themselves.

Just remember my on of my fav little player which Fawad should replace Azhar Ali. Fawad is lot more effective ODI player and would have him ahead of Azhar in that team.

Merc, I got to say that you've put up a pretty decent ODI squad out of the players that weren't chosen for the WC - Like Saqlain mentioned about Fawad ahead of Azhar, I agree with that reason being is that I'd want Azhar just to concentrate on tests for a good year or 2 as he's still pretty new in it and has a long way to go and IA am sure he'll have that No.3 spot for himself for quite a long time ofcourse if he continues to focus himself and puts in the hardwork into it.

As going for his List A record which is pretty good I'd also want to see him playing ODI cricket just as Trott is doing for England and doing it quite well even Azhar can make that No.3 spot in ODI's his own but for now Shafiq is trying to grasp the opportunities that are given to him to secure that place for himself for a few years to come...But hopefully we should see Azhar featuring in the ODI kit for Pakistan one day IA.

Yeah and I still think they should pick him for team once he has got some good performance in domestic competition.

Imran Nazir - If he had been given the same amount of chances AND confidence that was given to Hafeez by Afridi and the management, I'm sure he would put up a better show than what his averages suggest.

Azhar Ali - I would've liked to see him in the WC squad, but it wasn't to be - good solid batsmen to accompany a flashy Nazir up top.

Mohammad Yousuf - A class act and still has alot to offer. I've always believed that he was best to bat at number 3, shame he never put his hand up for that role.

Fawad Alam - It was a shame that he wasn't in the WC squad, mainly due to the fact that he was played at positions that didn't suit him - much better suited at number 4 where he can nurdle the ball around.

Shoaib Malik - Hate to say it, but he is a decent ODI batsmen and would have a great time on the flat decks in Asia.

Hammad Azam - Good finisher, proved it several times in domestic and junior cricket - world cup could've been a good stage to show his worth.

Sarfraz Ahmed - Don't know about his batting credentials but hes rated highly by most to be the best keeper in the country; and it would've been nice to have a keeper at the world cup who could catch. :)

Mansoor Amjad - Same reasons as Merc.

Yasir Arafat - A tragedy that he hasn't been given a consistent run in the side ever since he made his debut, sometimes due to injury but mostly due to incompetent selectors - hard working and promising cricketer who would give his all every single time.

Mohammad Talha - Same reasons as Merc.

Aizaz Cheema - Solid domestic record and seems to have some pace about him too. Shame he didn't get a chance earlier on in his career.

Reserves: Raza Hasan, Nasir Jamshed, Mohammad Irfan and Umar Amin

That's a solid combination imo; batting is very deep and the bowling has plenty of variety and around 6/7 options for the captain, whoever that may be. :D

Even Boi has stringed together a good looking line up with the likes of Arafat who from time to time has been harshly treated by PCB and then also he's got Cheema there who was unlucky to have not been with the squad in the Caribbean right now due to some injury.

that's a really good line-up except for the fact that MoYo refuses to bat at 3, so you're already causing yourself a headache by slotting him in at that position.

Merc your saying you would take Imran Nazir because you bat deep but your last specialist batsman is at number 6 and that is Sarfraz.

I believe you have selected too many pacers in this team. 4 fast bowlers and 2 spinners and both can really be classed as part time spinners now that Mansoor has decided to concentrate on his batting more. Also Shoaib Malik isn't really a full time spinner so I don't agree with your squad.

    Imran Nazir
    Nasir Jamshed
    Azhar Ali
    Mohammed Yousuf
    Umar Amin
    Shoaib Malik
    Sarfraz Ahmed
    Rana Naved
    Zulfiqar Babar
    Mohammed Talha
    Sohail Khan

PS. Do we really want Yousuf,Malik & Rana in the same team after the Australia tour? LOL

Rana Naved is a genuine lower order batsman, in fact I would send him in at number 3 as a pinch hitter when there's a big score on the board. Mansoor Amjad is a better batsman than Afridi, he has 6 centuries and 15 fifites at first class level. Also if he is given a good run he could bowl to a similar level as Afridi does. Let's not forget, if you remove minnows, Afridi's overall bowling average is closer to 40. Afridi bowls mainly in the middle of the innings unlike Hafeez who opens the bowling or Ajmal who bowls at the death. Bowling in the middle of the innings when the other side is conserving wickets isn't very difficult.

Malik didn't bowl a lot under the old rules but now that the flex is upto 15 degrees, he could bowl half or more of his quota.

As for the Malik-Rana-MoYo axis, well we cant all be as lucky as Afridi and have a team shorn of the major troublemakers and then claim to have united the troublemakers in the team.

Interesting selection. Some very good choices in there. Sharjeel and Naved Yasin really deserve chances as does Shehryar Ghani and Asad Ali.

But I haven't heard of Sohaib Maqsood, tell me more about him.

Because I wanted it to be a realistic XI. All 3 of those players are banned for a minimum of 5 years (for now). The others (in theory) are available to play.
