Review of the second day's play from the 1st Test between Pakistan & England.

    shoaib-malik-younis-khan-pakistan-cricket-a.png
At stumps: England 56 for 0 (Cook 39*, Moeen 15*) trail Pakistan 523 for 8 dec (Shoaib 245, Shafiq 107, Stokes 4-57) by 467 runs

It was another long and tiring day in the UAE heat for England as Pakistan, who started the day at 286 for 4 continued their dominance with the bat and went on to amass a massive 523. Shoaib Malik who started the day on 124 continued on his merry way, going on to score his first test double hundred and his highest first class score. Asad Shafiq, who was dropped by Ian Bell on 10 late in the first day, went on to make a century of his own, the eighth of his career. In the process he equalled Gary Sobers' record of most test centuries at No. 6.

Pakistan saw off the second new ball threat, and then opened up against Mark Wood, Adil Rashid and Moeen Ali. Rashid, in particular received a lot of punishment and went on to record the worst figures by a debutant, recording figures of 34-0-163-0. Only one England bowler has conceeded more runs on debut.

Pakistan's domination continued in the second session as the batsmen reached their respective milestones, but wickets tumbled after tea with Ben Stokes being the major beneficiary. Shafiq was the first to fall as he missed a delivery and was caught leg before to Mark Wood. Ben Stokes then dismissed Sarfraz Ahmed cheaply, inducing an edge to Ian Bell at midoff and Shoaib Malik also chipped the ball to Bell while trying to hit out vs Stokes a few overs later. When Zulfiqar Babar skied a Stokes delivery to Anderson at midwicket, Pakistan declared their innings at 523.

England openers Alastair Cook and Moeen Ali survived the 21 overs they faced, although there were a few jittery moments earlier when Cook almost edged the delivery on to his stumps and also came close to handling the ball off just the second delivery of the innings. Moeen too survived a close LBW shout off Rahat Ali's bowling. It meant that England have a steady start to their innings.

    What tomorrow holds:

England will hope their batsmen continue to score runs tomorrow while Pakistan will look for breakthroughs. Yasir Shah will be missed, but Wahab and Rahat looked good for Pakistan today and they will hope that one of the bowler steps up and initiates a collapse. Joe Root should be one to watch out as he has been in good form for England and Pakistan will do well to dismiss him early.

Good work Ahson. I think Pakistan should've declared when were down to Wahab. Declaring as wickets were falling quickly put the momentum back with England.

      Thanks. :)
Yeah maybe we should have declared earlier. Also, I think we were a bit unlucky with that Rahat LBW call. Umpire's call on the impact, but it was hitting the wickets..

      Good work ahson.

Pakistan batted well but iam afraid this pitch looks dead. You only have to be careful in first hour in morning otherwise there is nothing for bowlers in this pitch. You will lose wicket by your own mistake.

England bat very deep and except andersen all can bat very well. . This wont be an easy task for Pakistan bowlers.

Great write-up @Ahson8 I thought Imran Khan also bowled well and Shafiq also dint look as if he was part time by any means. Pakistan have got a gud attack for these conditions i feel. We have Rahat Ali and Imran Khan who can bowl well with new ball and reverse swing the old ball and then we have Wahab Riaz to charge in and bowl quick. He posed a lot of problems with his two lengths too and surely there is more to come tomorrow morning! Zulfiqar Baber his role will be to wheel away from one end and keep it extremely tight and not to leak runs!! Shoaib Malik has a role to play with the ball too in my opinion! There are atleast 5 lefties in English team - 2 of them tailenders Broad is not a tailender i categorize him as a bowling allrounder because he got 169 in the series decider against Asif and Amir and Ajmal in 2010 infamous series!! he can bat surely too!!

Thanks. I thought Rahat & Wahab looked good today so that's a ray of hope.

It's nice that Zulfiqar B. doesn't leak runs, but he needs to pick up some wickets too.

Cook & Root are the main batsmen. Need to get them out ASAP.

wickets will come for zulfiqar baber,. he just needs to follow a pattern and keep it tight and play with English batsmen's patience,. He can then line the right handers up and try getting them out bowled or lbw. Against left handers, it will be difficult for him but he just needs to bowl at a consistent line!! Wickets will come late for him when the lower middle order and tail is exposed to him and he can snap a couple of rite handers like Bell and Root with his natural angle!!

Should've declared when Sarfraz got out that way Shoaib Malik would've come back unbeaten too. Sarfraz, Wahab and Babar couldn't score anyway just time kept ticking away.

Reverse swing will come into play and thus watch out for Wahab & Imran Khan. And don't forget it is Abu Dhabi's pitch and batting won't be this easy from 3rd day onwards. Pakistani bowlers need to keep it tight I am sure wickets will tumble at some stage tomorrow.

It's just the truth, the article you wrote is brilliant and spot on, great reporting!

Pakistan will lose after Malik and Hafeez scores ducks and we're bowled out for 50 in the 2nd innings after England rack up 600, and then we lose by an innings

      Anyway, great article!

Zulfiqar is bloody useless. I'm hoping against hope either he or Malik(whom I feel will trouble England) can get 2-3 of England's top order so Wahab and Rahat can have a shot at the middle order when reverse comes into play.

      So optimistic

We'll collapse, Malik is a loser and will lose us this game. He's bowled badly too
      Still, great article!
