A 5.8 magnitude earthquake has struck eastern Pakistan, killing at least 19 people and injuring more than 300, local officials say.

The quake's epicentre was close to the city of Mirpur, in Pakistan-administered Kashmir.

Photos circulating on social media show a huge crack on a main road in the area, and partially destroyed houses.

The full extent of the damage is not yet known. Thousands of people died in a powerful quake in the area in 2005.

"The quake was 10km (six miles) deep... The worst hit was Mirpur," Pakistan's chief meteorologist, Muhammad Riaz, told the AFP news agency.

Children are among the dead, reports say.

Pakistan's military said "aviation and medical support" teams had been dispatched to the area.

After Tuesday's earthquake, tremors were felt as far away as the capitals of Pakistan and India, Islamabad and Delhi respectively.

The severe quake jolted several parts of northern and northeastern Punjab as well as Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and the federal capital, striking, however, at a shallow depth of 10 kilometres, with its epicentre lying a kilometre southeast of Mirpur.

The epicentre was very close to where my family live. Had a panic moment when i couldn't get through on the phone but fortunately everyone is ok. There's a lot of damage to property and as always the poorest have been hit the hardest. Still everyone is mindful of how much worse this could have been.

I am glad that your family is safe, because those pictures are very horrendous.

I hope people stay alert for aftershocks & keep an emergency backpack ready.

Innalillah WA Inna ilaihi rajiuon. May Allah help the Kashmiris.

On a side note, Firdous Aashiq Awaan made fun of this disaster saying it is a result of Tabdeeli.
