So the inaugural game of European Championship will be between hosts France and a strong Romanian side who are featuring in a high profile tournament only the second time in last 16 years.

The French side is boasting with world class players and are currently on a winning streak by going unbeaten in all their 4 friendly games. They are in fact the hot favorites to win this year's championship.

Meanwhile, the Romanians can cause an upset by not letting the French forwards penetrate through a strong Romanian defence but can also score when they get a chance as their current form suggests (8 goals in last 2 games).

Why Dimitri Payet Can Be France’s Technical Leader at Euro 2016

Dimitri Payet again stole the headlines on Monday night, this time with a last-minute winner to lift France to a dramatic 3-2 victory over Cameroon. Given the way he has cemented his reputation as a free-kick specialist since moving to West Ham, perhaps it shouldn’t come as any great surprise that his moment in the sun arrived from a set-piece. But for Payet, the decision to shoot wasn’t so obvious.

“I wasn’t that far out, but at the same time I was quite far out, so I didn’t know whether I should cross it or not,” Payet said of the moment. “Patrice (Evra) told me to have a go and I saw the goalkeeper try to move early to one side, so I tried to put it into the other corner and it hit the post and went in.

“It was a pretty good one because it was really one for a left-footer,” the right-footed wide man continued. “I need to see the replay again, but I am pretty pleased with it.”

There’s no doubt that another look at the replay would make him even more pleased with it, as he hit the dead ball with an incredible degree of precision. On the approach, he took a quick glance at goal, and based on his comments above, he was clearly checking on the goalkeeper’s positioning. To then curve the ball towards the other side, tuck it into the corner and wheel away in celebration, all the while tasked with the responsibility of finding a winner for his national team, could only be described as nothing less than incredibly impressive.

First and foremost, he’s a brilliant ball-playing winger. The former Marseille man, whose career truly took off under Marcelo Bielsa, has a habit of drifting into centrally-located pockets of space before using his exquisite technique to link up with nearby teammates. Even as a member of the superb France squad assembled by Deschamps, he offers a point of difference in this respect. The manager himself refers to this in simple terms: “every time he touches the ball, there is something happening.”

In this sense, Payet is something of an outlier for Les Bleus. Indeed the other options out wide, guys like Antoine Griezmann, Kingsley Coman and Anthony Martial, are far more direct in their approach. They offer pace, drive and plenty of quality, but perhaps not the subtlety of Payet. They aren’t prototypical playmakers, and in a French side who operate in a 4-3-3 and therefore lack a genuine creator in the No. 10 position, Payet provides the Euro 2016 hosts with a boost of invention in the final third.

Then, of course, there’s the fact that Payet works beautifully with Evra along the left-hand side. He floats towards the centre, thereby allowing the left-back to overlap. Throw in the exertions of France’s powerful central midfield unit, which features Blaise Matuidi and Paul Pogba in the most advanced roles, and this dynamic along the touchline enables France to manipulate the opposition defence.

More specifically, Payet can kick-start an attack up the middle by moving into that part of the pitch, but if he manages to draw the opposition right-back out of position as he heads into the centre, France can then look to Evra in the wide areas. This makes the team a more unpredictable one, as they have a number of avenues through which they can work the ball forward.

All in all, Payet gives the French XI a nice level of balance. They can use a more direct player on one flank while the West Ham man pulls the strings from the other. He highlighted the potential of this set-up with a brilliant display against Cameroon, and as he weaves his magic in the midst of a thoroughly athletic French team, it’s hard not to consider him the technical leader of Les Bleus.

It’s for this reason that Payet should work his way into the starting line-up for Euro 2016, and on home soil, there’s no doubt that he has the quality to set the tone in open play. Add his free-kicks into the mix, and what you’re left with is a player who could be one of the stars of the tournament.

@Munna I asked these mods before as well but my suggestion was disregarded :shrug

I think it will be better to have a separate twitter account to tweet threads/news about this section. Something like Sportistan_Cs. We have enough mods to keep bit active regarding all other sports news and updates about euros etc. This way we might get some other fans. .may be fans of other countries as well who dont really follow cricket and are more into football or other sports.

Whilst France should win, it'll either be a emphatic French win or a sluggish 'nothing really happened' draw
