Azhar Mahmood to lead Islamabad Leopards in Faysal Bank T20 Cup

Islamabad: The specialist T20 all rounder Azhar Mahmood is all set to make his comeback to Pakistan’s domestic cricket as captain of Islamabad Leopards in the upcoming Faysal Bank Twenty20 Cup.
With an introduction of the veteran cricketer in lackluster Leopards, the team will get some boost to compete other aggressive teams playing in the fascinating domestic T20 tournament.
The team failed to win a match in Pakistan’s national T20 cup the previous year and ultimately failed to succeed the subsequent Super Eight T20.
The Leopards are on a losing streak of as many as six matches in the National T20 tournaments since 2010. Last time when Mahmood featured in the line-up of the Leopards, they reached the Semi Final under captaincy of Shoaib Akhtar.
The 37-year all-rounder is considered as a T20 hot shot as he has performed awfully well for different Twenty20 franchises in the T20 leagues.
He has played 21 Tests and 143 One Days for Pakistan. In the last two years, he has played for Kent (England), Dhaka Gladiators (Bangladesh), Wayamba United (Sri Lanka), Auckland Aces (New Zealand) and Kings’ XI Punjab (India).

Excellent news, maybe we'll see him back, I really liked the guy as a cricketer in my childhood :)

Just like how Afridi or Sachin was for a generation, my 1st memory of cricket is his 100 against SA. 2nd was Akhtar demolishing SA from 75/1 to 99 all out :)

This is just ridiculous from PCB

Instead of giving chance to youngsters and groom captains or atleast look for captaincy material, they have handed captaincy to Younis,Yousuf,Misbah and Azhar.

What makes ironic is that Mohammad Hafeez has never been part of Lahore teams but now is, that is ironic. While on other hand Mohammad Yousuf is from Lahore. If I'm not mistaken he lead Lahore Lions to title couple of years ago.

    He should be.

Mohammad Hafeez would be a good addition to Lahore Lions because of his spin bowling.

    This!!!

Why not use a competition like this thrust a deserving youngster to lead their local team with the experienced players around them for guidance and tips?!

I suppose some "egos" cant get over the fact of that they're being led by an upcoming youngster.

I dont really see why we make an issue of this anymore. It's surely not the first time this is happening, is it?

We can only expect hope (not really) :(

It's not about making an issue just saying what/how it should be.

Do get your point as nothing logical happens with the PCB!

KARACHI: Seeking a return to international cricket after a two-year absence, former Pakistan captain Mohammad Yousuf has accepted the captain’s arm-band for Lahore Lions ahead of the National Twenty20 Cup that is due to take place from December 3 to 10.

After being told by selectors to show his form in the domestic circuit, Yousuf even tried to appear for PQA in the ongoing President’s Trophy but was refused permission by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) which stated that he was ineligible according to the rules. However, the middle-order batsman, who has played 90 Tests and 288 One-Day Internationals, has been handed an opportunity by Lahore region.

“I’m looking forward to doing well in the T20 tournament and lead the Lions to the best of my abilities,” Yousuf told The Express Tribune. “I cannot predict how long I’ll be able to play international cricket for but for the time being, I feel fit enough to contribute for Pakistan. My aim is to return to international cricket by proving my form and fitness. I can’t say if I’ll be selected for the series against India or South Africa as it’s up to the selection committee and the PCB.”

The Lahore Regional Cricket Association (LRCA) President Khawaja Nadeem confirmed that they had named Yousuf as the Lions’s captain, adding that the offer was made because ‘Yousuf has been a great servant for Pakistan cricket’.

Yousuf, however, has pulled out at the eleventh hour prior to domestic matches various times in the past and Nadeem, aware of the situation, stressed that LRCA had played its part and it was up to Yousuf to make sure it counted.

Hafeez snubs Wolves to play for Lions
Meanwhile, Pakistan’s T20 captain Mohammad Hafeez has decided to snub Faisalabad Wolves after his long-standing differences with the city’s cricket association president Chaudhry Anwar and will be featuring in the star-studded Lions team.

It has also been learnt by The Express Tribune that Hafeez had initially wanted to be part of the Rawalpindi Rams squad and his name has been added by both teams with a final decision to be made at a later date. Even Saeed Ajmal had thought about turning up for the Rams but decided to feature for his local side where he is all set to open up an academy.

Hafeez, though, was not available to comment on the development.

    LRCA requests Ali’s ban review
Meanwhile, LRCA has requested the PCB to review its one-year ban on left-arm fast-bowler Emmad Ali so that he could be possibly be included in the T20 squads and also get into reckoning for the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy.

Ali was banned alongside KESC’s Bismillah Khan for a scuffle on the pitch during a grade-II match in April. Nadeem said that the player was close to completing seven months of his ban and the board should forgive him for his mistake as he is an important player for Lahore and a future prospect for Pakistan.

Internal politics forces Gul to leave Peshawar

KARACHI: Internal politics has struck another blow to Peshawar Region as it has lost seasoned Test cricketer Umar Gul who is likely to represent Islamabad in the National T20 Championship to be held here from December 3-10.

The region had already lost the country’s top Test batsman Younis Khan.

Former secretary of the Peshawar District Cricket Association (PDCA) Abdul Aziz told ‘The News’ on Wednesday that no Test cricketer would play for Peshawar Region because of the way the cricketing affairs were being run by its authorities. “Gul has had a long relationship with Peshawar and is the product of the region. He definitely has been compelled to sever his ties with the region because he was not given the due respect as the skipper of his team. The authorities never considered his proposals about the selection,” Aziz revealed.

“Umar Gul and Younis Khan wanted their region to flourish but nobody listened to them and they both severed ties with us. Our cricket is touching extreme low due to the way the game is being run here,” Aziz said.

“We have players like left-arm pacer Mian Khan, allrounder Zohaib Khan, pacer Altaf and a few others but they are not being given proper chances,” said Aziz.

“How can a player go to the region when he is not given a chance in the District Championship,” he questioned.

Gul’s inclusion will give a great boost to Islamabad who are already expecting Test-discarded Azhar Mehmood to join them for the T20 event.

In the absence of Gul, Akbar Badshah will lead Peshawar whose final selection was made by Salim Jaffar and Azhar Khan.

Gul, who is living with his family in Islamabad, could not be reached on phone.

Younis joined Abbottabad Region last year after developing differences with the authorities in Peshawar. And the experienced batsman has been given the responsibility of leading Abbottabad in the T20 slots, while left-arm Test seamer Junaid Khan will serve as his deputy.

“Yes, Younis has been made skipper for the T20 Championship and I hope that he will get the best out of his team which has good players like Adnan Raees, Junaid Khan and Yasir Hameed,” Abbottabad Region President Amir Nawab told this correspondent.

“Younis will also lead our side in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy,” Nawab said.
Shoaib Malik as usual will lead the country’s most successful outfit of the T20 format Sialkot Stallions. But the Stallions, who played in the Champions League Qualifiers in South Africa, will miss their star left-arm spinner Abdul Rehman, who is serving a ban imposed by the English Cricket Board after being tested positive for using cannabis during a county championship game last season.
Shoaib’s younger brother Adeel will be given a chance along with 24-year old leggie Mansoor Amajd. “We have decided to give chance to Adeel, who had won three championships for us while Mansoor Amjad will also be there as he had a fine domestic season last season,” Sialkot Region chief Zulfiqar Ahmed Malik said.

“Our region is full of talent and we always face problems while making selection. I would request the Pakistan Cricket Board to include Sheikhupura district in Faisalabad, then it would relieve our burden,” Malik said.

Faisalabad Wolves will as usual be led by Misbah-ul-Haq while Pakistan’s T20 skipper Mohammad Hafeez has decided to play for Lahore. “As per rules, two players in a region are allowed to play for any team and in the beginning Mohammad Hafeez had told me that he would play for Lahore,” Faislabad Region president Mohammad Anwar said.

“Misbah will captain the side, while off-spinner Saeed Ajmal has told me that he would play a couple of matches before going for Australia’s Big Bash,” Anwar said.

“Saeed could be replaced by Imran Khalid, while we also have fast bowlers Samiullah Niazi, Asad Ali and left-arm fast bowler Ehsan Adil and Mohammad Talha and I am confident that my team will deliver,” Anwar said.

Karachi Dolphins have already announced Asad Shafiq as their skipper after allrounder Shahid Afridi decided to appear only as a player in the event which is being held to pick players for the India series.
Lahore Lions will be led by star batsman Mohammad Yousuf who, along with Shahid Afridi, has not been allowed by the PCB to play in the ongoing President’s Trophy.

PTV Sports bags the broadcasting rights of Faysal Bank T20

    Published: Fri, 23 November 2012 10:20 PM

LAHORE: PTV Sports, Pakistan’s second sports channel which was launched at start of this year, has bagged the broadcasting rights for Pakistan’s upcoming domestic Twenty20 event, alias Faysal Bank Twenty20, sources revealed to Criclens.
Previously, the broadcasting rights from 2007 to 2012 of Pakistan’s domestic cricket were owned by Geo Super. The Super Eight T20, which was played in March 2012 in Rawalpindi after Asia Cup, was the last domestic event under the previous broadcasting contract.
In the latest auction, PTV outdid Geo Super’s bid to successfully pocket the TV rights. However, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) didn’t put on a five-year broadcasting deal this time. The PTV’s bid is confined to only coming Twenty20 event. The sources also revealed that PCB wanted both the channels – PTV Sports and Geo Super – to have a mutual sharing in the rights but this deal couldn’t be reached. In getting the rights, PTV Sports has become third channel – after Geo Super and Ten Sports – which will stream Pakistan’s T20 Cricket.
PCB’s move to auction the rights on tournament by tournament basis could be because of the proposed Twenty20 League of Pakistan, which will have a fresh bid.
Faysal Bank Twenty20 2012 is likely to be played between December 2 and 10 in Karachi. However, there hasn’t been any official confirmation yet by PCB regarding the dates and the venues. The sources further mentioned that PCB is also mooting on option of splitting the event between two cities, Multan and Karachi. If this proposal is acted upon then one leg of the event will get staged in Multan while the other in Karachi.
