Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Friday invited legendary captain Imran Khan and 17 other Test cricketers to watch match between Pakistan and World XI.

According to reports, with just a few days remaining in the arrival of World XI, PCB has sent out the invitations to former cricketers including 1992 World Cup winning skipper Imran Khan.

However, rest of the guest list is not revealed.

It is pertinent to mention here that World XI are all set to arrive in Pakistan on September 11 and will play a three-match Twenty 20 series.

The preparations of the tour have been finalized while online tickets for the Independence Series have sold out, just as demand spikes for the coveted seats at the Gaddafi Stadium, which will host the three T20 matches on September 12, 13 and 15.

Imran Khan turns down PCB invitation to watch World XI series

Cricketer turned politician Imran Khan has ignored an invitation from Pakistan Cricket Board chairman, Najam Sethi, to attend a game between the national team and World XI at the Gaddafi Stadium this week.

Imran left on a five-day visit to the United Kingdom as the World XI is due to reach Lahore in the wee hours of Monday for the three T20 international matches which are the first in Pakistan with the support of the ICC since terrorists attacked the Sri Lankan team bus in Lahore in March 2009.

Imran, who heads the main opposition party, is expected to only return to Pakistan on the day the World XI ends its tour.

Sethi had announced at a recent press conference that he had invited 17 former captains and stalwarts for the series including Imran and Javed Miandad.

Imran has been a staunch critic of Sethi who was caretaker Chief Minister of Punjab when the last general elections were held.

It is not known how many of these former captains or stalwarts will attend the matches although Pakistan’s discarded off-spinner, Saeed Ajmal, complained on a television channel that he had been sent no invitation for the matches.

Shows that the guy still possesses the biggest stature in Pakistan cricket. It still becomes news if he attends or misses a cricket event.

‘If Imran Khan will come for cricket, we will all bow before him’

LAHORE: Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Najam Sethi on Tuesday said that he will welcome cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan if he attends a Pakistan versus World XI match, ARY News reported.

Speaking exclusively to ARY News, the PCB chief maintained that he had invited the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan when international players graced Gaddafi stadium during PSL 2017 final in March and has sent him an invitation to watch the ongoing Independence Cup.

“This time I not only invited him but also urged him to bring his friends and relatives. Cricket is cricket and politics should have no place here. If he will come for cricket, we all will bow before him,” said Sethi.

The PCB chairman also revealed that Pakistan’s three greats leaving the cricketing field will be accorded a befitting farewell during the concluding ceremony of Independence Cup.

It is pertinent to note here that Imran Khan is the top critic of Sethi and has criticised his appointment as the PCB chairman time and again.

Imran Khan had also termed foreign players — who played the final of Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2017 in Lahore “phateechar” (useless).

Pakistan Tuesday took a giant step towards reviving international cricket at home with a 20-run victory over the World XI in a match before excited crowds amid tight security.

Apart from five limited-overs games against minnows Zimbabwe in 2015, Pakistan have not hosted top-level international cricket March 2009.

Since then Pakistan have been forced to play most of their “home” games in the United Arab Emirates.
