The match thread for the first test of Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Team India will be determined to continue its ascendancy (points-wise) on the ICC rankings table. Our bowling unit has a lot of questions surrounding them and they would have to put in a strong performance worthy of the No. 1 side. The Australians wouldn't be short of incentive and motivation - regaining the top slot, building a winning momentum going into the Ashes etc. Australia will be hoping their fast men get a grip on the art of reverse swing straightaway. It could be a long day in the field for them if they don't. Spin is an obvious weakness and Ponting will hope Hauritz lifts his game a notch or two.

    VENUE

The match will be played at the beautiful PCA stadium in Mohali, part of the Chandigarh TriCity region. The Mohali pitch has historically assisted pace bowlers but the region has experienced unusually heavy downpour till the last week. This has hampered the pitch preparations and the curator has predicted an uncharacteristic slow and low turf.

Clearly, Indian groundsmen have much to learn from their Pakistani counterparts adept at making lightning quick pitches. Thank you very much.

I am just little bit disappointed in the pitch preparation but who we are kidding with, India is not known for seamer friendly pitches but I was under the impression, Mohali is one place where one can extract some bounce from the pitch. But this series is the one I am looking forward to, for purely a cricketing reasons. Two of the best test teams on a display, you can't ask for more. oh crap! Sehwag just dropped Twatson as I write.

That should've been the maketing line for the series - Australia's tour to India: I'm going to sleep!

If Pakistan cricket is the alarm clock, Indian pitches and Rahul DRAW-vid are the sleeping pills of world cricket.

Some bizzare tactics by Indian team.... specially by Dhoni. At 354/4, with Tendulkar in the 90s and Raina in the 70s, India looked to have the match in hand. 70 runs behind, 2 well set batsmen, and Laxman, Dhoni to follow the Indian plan seemed surely to be to aim to overtake the Aus total early on D4, and hope to bat until tea, and get a lead of 150-odd. With the pitch taking more turn, and the odd ball staying low, India's slim chances for victory were a lot stronger than at any time before the game.

Tendulkar fell for 98, and then strange tactics followed. Dhoni & Raina started blasting the way you would expect if India were 70 ahead, not 70 behind. After Dhoni & Harbhajan fell in quick succession, Zaheer Khan & Raina continued to blast away, taking risks that seemed totally bizarre. The only ploy that made any sort of sense was if Dhoni was planning a surprise declaration and have Australia bat tonight, but that wasn't the case either. Instead, no attempt was made to get Raina to a well-deserved ton against Aus (they don't come easy) as Zaheer committed hara-kiri not once, but twice...

Still India have scored enough that it is unlikely they will lose from here, though if Aus score quickly they could be under some pressure on D5.

Any NOTW reporter covering this series? ;)

    India choking.

Respect to Aussies. What a team. Getting a batting line up that powerful out for peanuts, in their own yard.
