Is Pakistan still an unpredictable team?

Unpredictability in sports should have a pattern or regular occurrence otherwise it would be termed a fluke.

I don't need to give a background here about why we used to be called unpredictable once.

However, we hardly have any genuine match winners these days who can single handedly snatch victory from jaws of defeat.

Is our unpredictability due to the attribution of the players we have or is it a team natural instinct?

Yes. CT 17 is a prime example. They came out of nowhere like a raging bull to lift the trophy. Hardly any of us gave them a chance.

One of the reasons Pakistan was considered unpredictable was because despite a predictably terrible batting lineup they had bowlers like Wasim, Waqar, Akhtar, Saqlain and Mushy who regularly took a handful of wickets which can turn any game on it's head.

Also you had batsmen like Moin, Wasim, Razzaq, Ijaz and Afridi that would sometimes on rare occasions, out of nowhere, just destroy a bowling attack with a ridiculous strike rate and against the run of play.

Currently we don't have bowlers who take handfuls of wickets nor batsmen who can destroy an attack at a massive strike rate

That was more of an organized win rather than unpredictable. All the games, bar one against Sri Lanka, were quite one sided in our favor... nothing too chaotic or mercurial that we are known for.

There are some people who even call that a fluke but thats another debate.

Unpredictability should have some sort of pattern or regular occurrence. In our case, it hasn't been happening ever since Afridi has retired.

Exactly my thoughts and pretty much sums up the thread.

There is not even a single player in the current setup who can stand up to an opposition. Not even Fakhar or Amir against popular beliefs.

In bilateral series against good teams you can predict Pakistan will lose, I reckon they are inconsistent because of small habits and a combination of 'small things' that add up, reading the game/game awareness, anticipation, fitness, fielding, taking advantage of period which going in your favour or damage control, getting rid of defeatist mentality. Yes we will have skill problem but that will only come into play in foreign Test matches and maybe Odi games against India and England.

In 90's we used to win lost battles and now we lose games from winning position and reason is simple, we dont have anymore Saeed, Inzy, Yousuf, Afridi, Razzaq, Moin, Wasim, Waqar, Saqi and Shoaib.

Not much nowadays. Lack of genuine match winners unlike the past.

During Misbah's tenure, we had stopped being an unpredictable team cus Misbah by nature was a consistent personality and a stable person! Misbah would stick to his game-plan no matter what! He did not use to play an irresponsible shot even if there was opportunity to score some quick runs! Same attitude he inculcated in his players! His players specially test players were similar to him the likes of Younus Azhar Asad were all studious type of people who had a strong work ethic!
But ever since Sarfraz has become Captain, our unpredictability seems to have returned for example Champions Trophy success where noone gave us any chance!
There are pros and cons of being stable or unpredictable! Stability brings consistent results without brilliance! Whereas, you are going to lose more often with being unpredictable and inconsistent but this unpredictability has an X factor and it works in your favor in big tournaments~ All of a sudden a combination clicks and entire team functions as a single unit and with sheer brilliance overcomes any obstacles that come in the way!!

    Agree with Merc's sentiment.

Also, other teams have finally caught with us and know that even giving a sniff of win to Pakistan can cost them the game so they make sure to destroy us properly lol.
