A 27-year-old man was shot dead by police firing in Islamabad on Friday after he allegedly did not stop when an police official signaled him to.

According to initial reports, Taimoor Riaz was passing by the Sabzi Mandi area in Islamabad with a friend when police asked him to stop his car.

“When they didn’t stop, the policemen fired at them and a bullet hit Taimoor on his head,” a police official told The Express Tribune. It’s not yet certain whether the friend was injured in the firing.

A murder case has been filed at Sabzi Mandi police station against Constable Samiur Tariq by the deceased’s brother, Sajid Riaz. Both policemen involved in the incident fled the scene and are currently at large.

Relatives of the deceased youth started protest with the dead body on Islamabad’s IJP road. Enraged people also reportedly stormed the police station and reportedly vandalised the equipment there.

Later, they dispersed following assurance by PML-N MPA Ziaullah Shah of including clauses of FIR in the case.

Meanwhile, talking to media, Taimoor’s father Rafiq Butt said that it was clear from the CCTV footage that the personnel had opened fire on the vehicle without signaling it to stop. As a result, he added, Taimoor received three bullets which caused his death.

How could they start firing on a car blindly? Even if the car did not respond to Police call, there was no need to start shooting like a spray gun. They could have shot the tyres to stop the car. This happens when fools are handed over firearms. Scary stuff.

if he didn't stop at the checkpoint as stated in the title then I can see why they fired at him but the article says there wasn't any checkpoint and he was asked to stop randomly. If the later is the case then the police should be charged and jailed for life

There was no need to fire at the driver, they could have fired at the tires to disable the car. Also policemen fleeing the scene tells you everything who was the culprit there.

May his soul rest in peace and his family come to terms with this tragedy.

exactly there are a lot of ways to stop the car, pulling in front of the car is the basic protocol police are trained to do, then there's ramming the car and shooting the tires or shooting in the air.

someone should correct the title, the victim wasn't arriving at a checkpost

It is getting press coverage because it happened in the capital, had it happened anywhere else it would have been swept under the carpet and termed as another police encounter against drug mafia or terrorists or bla bla..It is time for the citizens to wake up and demand fairness and accountability, but who would you trust for that?

This is not acceptable. The police officers involved in this must b punished in front of Pakistanis.

Inna lilahi wa inna ilahi rajioon. Matter should be investigated properly but there is no way you can defend the act of policeman. They could have saved the number or fired at the tyres or asked someone on checkposts ahead or police ahead to stop the car. There were so many means to stop him.

Btw Pakistan is too much developed now when girls staying outside whole night and their families dont even know ?? I remember we werent even allowed to go for Isha prayers without father and werent allowed to leave house after maghrib..which used to be around 7.

You cannot fire at someone if they dont stop at the checkpost. You fire on the tires.

Very sad incident. The guy got confused because he was dating the girl and didn't stopped when police signalled him to stop. Police should have fired on the tyres but they shot the poor guy straight on the head.

He was from Mardan @Passionate Pakistani

it wasn't a checkpost but if it was I can understand the reason because then according to Police he might have been a suicide bomber/terrorist

@Shahzad.Firdous put your law education into helping us out here. I also have found myself intrigued over this whole thing of what if you over run a checkpost.

You can't execute somebody for not stopping, he may not have heard the signal. Go for the tires and if need be chase the vehicle. Going straight to kill is the sign of a police force that shouldn't be given weapons.

There was a famous case in the UK in WW2 when a cyclist approached a checkpoint and was ordered to stop, he didn't heed the warnings and he was shot dead.

Turned out he didn't stop as he was deaf and couldn't have heard the warnings.

This all stuff is quite sad, tbh..
Yeah, it does seem like the police guy panicked and instead of shooting for the tires, shot the driver.
