KARACHI: Development and renovation work at the National Cricket Stadium in the metropolitan city has begun on Tuesday.

Geo News reported that an amount of ten million rupees has been allocated for this purpose.

It may be recalled that the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) had announced some four months ago that the PSL final for the third edition of the tournament in 2018 would be held in Karachi.

Speaking to the media in Lahore on May 1, the then PCB chief Shahrayar Khan said that after the successful hosting of the PSL 2017 final, the game would be played in Karachi in 2018.

Its a massive job and time is very little.

Improving the ground conditions is good. Changing the roof, not so sure if its needed much at this time.

Should look to provide modern facilities to spectators and media people.

PCB's lack of planning is something that is not new at all.

No international cricket since 2009 in Pakistan and not a single upgrade took place in all these years till now just because a World XI team came to Lahore and now the PSL final to take place in Karachi in 3 months.

9 years they had and yet did ZILCH to improve the standards of the grounds while pocketing all the money they could.

To be fair their income has taken a massive hit during this period due to lack of profitable home tours. I'd be surprised if they actually made any money at all during this period. With the obvious decline in interest in the sport post 2007 era

    That's fine but the fact still remains is that where has all the money gone then? They've been spending it on splashing cars for their selectors, their own holiday shopping and all family expenses etc;

    Haroon Rashid himself has said that the PCB generates its own finances and also pays millions in taxes etc;

They had all these years to make little changes around the cricketing structures in the country but didn't do anything. It's just the same way the country has been too in the years too.

Karachi unlikely to hold PSL matches next year

KARACHI (Dunya News)- Question mark persists on holding Pakistan Super League’s (PSL) matches in Karachi’s National Stadium next year as completion of stadium’s renovation before schedule remains a key hurdle.

On the other hand, franchises also haven’t not yet released list of alternative players in case regular foreign players refuse to visit Karachi.

Franchises believe it would not be possible to hold matches in Karachi against backdrop of current situation.

Though, Pakistan Cricket Board has left no stone unturned in aforementioned regard but vast renovation work as well as political unrest have severely dented the cause.

Will Karachi’s National Stadium be ready for PSL3 final?
While Lahore has experienced what it feels like to watch international cricket at home, the residents of Karachi remain deprived of this joy.

International cricket started returning to Pakistan last year with teams Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka touring the country. The final of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) was also held in Lahore and was a spectacle to behold.

The wait for Karachi maybe over in 2018 as the Pakistan Cricket Board has the intentions to hold the final of the third instalment of PSL at the National Stadium. However, will the National Stadium be able to hold the final in March is a big question.

Having not seen international cricket since the attack on the Sri Lankan cricket team in 2009 - the National Stadium was neglected and no longer resembles an international stadium. The PCB has an uphill task ahead with repair work still in its initial stages.

The roofs of all enclosures were in ruins, and although they have been torn down it will be next to impossible to replace them with new ones before March. In 14 enclosures the construction of bathrooms has just begun.

The Chairman Box and VIP enclosure are also in dire need of repairs, while a decision has been taken to not open the VIP gallery. It has only been a week since work to install elevators in the hospitality gallery began.

Karachi needs and deserves the return of international cricket. Fans have great anticipation for the PSL3 final to be held in the city of lights and it would be a shame if the PCB disappoints them.

I understand we don't have cricket since 2009, but whats the justification of having your main cricket stadium in such an awful shape? Yeah, sure don't invest more into it, but there is something called 'maintenance' - we don't have this concept in Pakistan. And ironically, we have budget for it though, and always goes in the pockets of goons.

‘NSK will be ready for PSL final’

KARACHI: Sindh Governor Mohammad Zubair on Sunday was confident that the National Stadium would be ready for hosting the PSL-3 final slated to be held on March 25.

“The NLC has great professional reputation, clear cut objectives and deadlines,” Zubair said at a press briefing during his visit to National Stadium. “I don’t know of anything which could create problems in the way of holding the final here,” he added.

“They have briefed us and I have no doubt about their plans. I will review their progress regularly. I don’t want to interfere in their work but we do want to tell the whole world how serious we are about it,” Zubair said.

He said the NSK development work would be completed in two phases.

“The first phase is very short as we have to hold the PSL final on March 25. And the second phase will be completed by November next year. And at that time we along with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Najam Sethi, federal and provincial governments will try to hold maximum international matches in Karachi,” Zubair added.

He said that the PSL final in Karachi would not only be a cricket match but it would also revive the beauty of the city and cricket in the city.

He said that he would personally try to convince foreign players to come and play the PSL final in Karachi.

“I will try to convince them as Karachi has changed a lot during the last four years. The PSL final will be a fruit of our four and a half years of efforts,” the governor said.

“We are also going along with squash legend Jehangir Khan to hold a big international squash event in Karachi. It will be after 20 long years that any such activity will be held here,” Zubair revealed. He said that the things had already been finalised in this respect. He said that Karachi was the cultural, sporting and economic hub of Pakistan. “After holding any big sporting event here we will go to any economic forum and tell the world that if we can organise a big sport event why we cannot organise a small economic activity,” he said.

He promised that whatever support would be needed from the federal government would be extended to successfully conduct the PSL final. Former Test cricketer and advisor to the PCB chairman Salahuddin Sallu, Iqbal Qasim and NSK Manager Rashid Khan were also present at the briefing.

They would have kept the old roof And primered it however from the inside all of it was rusted and decayed,GSL's roof is the opposite,Decayed from the outside however in good condition from the inside.

No roof would be pretty atrocious.

Well this is what happens when you don't spend money on maintenance. I reckon roof has passed its best before date decades ago, therefore has to be done from the scratch.

I spoke to one of my friend who went to be stadium many times, and according to him, the roof was much much lower of this stadium. You can't see the ball when batsman hits a little bit higher. So its good that they're redoing it, and hopeful will remodel it a bit at least if not completely.

From what I have gathered, the roof reconstruction won't be done in time for PSL.At present they're only removing the old roof and replacing the seats, press room, team change rooms and VIP enclosures.

The roof will eventually be replaced later in 2018.

NSK work to be done by Feb 15, says Sethi

KARACHI: Chairman Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Najam Sethi has claimed that work at National Stadium would be completed by February 15, well ahead of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) final in Karachi.

“We are endeavouring to complete the repair work at National Stadium by February 15. Even if it gets delayed and is completed by March 15, we will be able to host the final on March 25,” Sethi told reporters here at National Stadium on Sunday.

However, to a question he said that the PCB also had a plan B for hosting the final. “Definitely the plan-B is very much there. If there is any issue then the final will be held in Lahore where two matches are already scheduled to be held,” Sethi said.

The uplift work at the National Stadium is in progress. A few days ago Sindh Governor visited the venue and told media that the stadium would be ready for the showpiece.“During our busy schedule we held meetings with the Chief Minister and Commissioner Karachi, home secretary. We also had Col Azam and Col Usman with us. The meetings were very productive in which we discussed various important issues,” Sethi said.

“I am happy with the response I received from Sindh government,” he added. To a question Sethi said it was not the case that Pakistan had bowed before India regarding the FTP. “It’s not that we have let ourselves down. But you know that there is no game better than an India-Pakistan game and it is our right and we should fight for it. It’s an issue of 100 or 150 million dollars,” Sethi said.

He said that India wants to host the Asia Cup and the BCCI had also asked its government for permission. “But the government has not yet given it permission. We have also tried to hold the Emerging Asia Cup and both matters are pending,” he said.

He said that Pakistan earned 400,000 dollars through the T10 League in the UAE. Sethi further said that successful hosting of PSL 3 final in Karachi would send a positive message to the world and the notion that Karachi was a dangerous city would be busted. “This is an issue of national interest,” he said.

Karachi prepares for PSL final with full-dress rehearsal

KARACHI: A full-dress rehearsal of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) third edition’s final will be held in Karachi on Sunday for which international security consultant arrived in Karachi on Saturday.

Sindh police, Pakistan Rangers, Airport Security Force (ASF) and all other security agencies of Pakistan will present a demonstration of the security arrangements with other stakeholders of the PSL final also present.

One of the international security consultants, Craig Dotson, arrived in Karachi to analyse the security arrangements in the city.

Datson will witness the full dress rehearsal to be held in National Stadium of Karachi (NSK) on February 11, after which he will submit a report to the Federation of International Cricketers’ Association (FICA).

“I will be having a meeting with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) officials today here in Karachi and then will be visiting the stadium too,” said Dotson while talking to media. “I will also be present at the full dress rehearsal and will be making a report.”

Talking about his visit, he further added: “I am not sure for how many days I am here. I will know that after the meeting with the PCB officials.”

Meanwhile, DIG East Sultan Khawaja said that the security officials have been in coordination for Sunday’s full-dress rehearsal and a meeting was also hosted by the Chief Minister Sindh with all the high officials of Law Enforcement Agencies.

“We have been in coordination with them since November,” said Khawaja. “The security consultants gave us suggestions when they last visited in November and we have been following them. We had presented a comprehensive presentation to them then. Chief Minister also held a meeting with the top security officials of Rangers, Police and ASF on Friday and all coordination has been done.”

Khawaja added that the plan was explained to the consultants on Saturday and a practical demonstration will be held on Sunday. “On Sunday, we will cover the theoretical part, while on Saturday we will do the practically show the consultants how everything will happen.”

Khawaja then revealed the highlights of the security plan which will be put in place on March 25 for the final. “On March 25, we will be deploying around 8,000 policemen who will have 300 to 400 police mobiles and 300 to 400 police motorbikes at their disposal. Pakistan Rangers and other security agencies of Pakistan will also be a part of the security detail for the players,” he said.

He continued: “The rehearsal on Sunday will be a four to six hour affair where all aspects of the security will be demonstrated to the security consultant, and if he has any concerns we will note them.”

He then requested the citizens of Karachi to cooperate during the practice on Sunday.

“We have to prove to everyone that the people of Karachi are peace loving and law-abiding citizens who deserve to witness cricket matches,” said Khawaja, adding that Karachiites will be told about alternate traffic routes through Sindh Police’s radio station.

Optimism aplenty as NSK renovation work for final speeds up

IN this picture, taken on Feb 17, labourers work at the National Stadium.—AFP

KARACHI: Pessimism has finally given way to optimism as the renovation work at the National Stadium — the country’s premier Test centre — for the Pakistan Super League (PSL) final moved into full throttle this week.

It is the first phase of the overhaul, under the supervision of National Logistic Cells (NLC) Engineering Wing, and it is expected that at the end of it, the venue will be ready to stage the showpiece match of the country’s glitzy Twenty20 league on March 25.

While the third edition of the PSL springs into action with the opening ceremony in Dubai on Thursday night, it is the final at the National Stadium that has been the talk of the town with growing excitement amongst the fans of the game who are looking forward to seeing the game’s biggest stars in action for the first time since 2009.

Despite that, and the organisers having officially announced that the final will indeed be held in Karachi, apprehensions remain with rumours swirling that it might still be shifted to Lahore, the venue for the final in the last edition which stages two playoff fixtures this time around.

“We’re working at a nice pace and heading in the right direction to complete the first phase of work before the final,” project in-charge Lt Col Mohammad Sohaib told Dawn at his project office on Wednesday.

“A labour force of 250 and officials are working round the clock to ensure that we meet the deadline,” he added, quashing rumours that the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) might not be able to hold the PSL final at the venue.

The PCB awarded a Rs1.5billion contract to the NLC to complete the renovation and upgradation work in two phases.

“This is a colossal task but we’re working on a war footing to ensure we complete it,” Sohaib said.

From the stands, the field gives an imposing green look. But with construction work all around, dust and garbage is prevalent at the venue. National Stadium general manager Arshad Khan told Dawn that the floodlight towers have been repaired with the damaged lights having been replaced while the same has been done with the seats in the stands.

The renovation work began on November 4 and according to the deadline the first phase has to be completed within 120 days.

Sohaib informed that sand blasting of the rusted roof over all the enclosures has been completed with the application of a coat of primer. “As many as 160 trusses were dismantled from the roof during the process despite different hiccups,” he added.

The dressing rooms have also been completely overhauled with new floor tiles and sanitary fittings having been installed while the VIP Hospitality Boxes have also been refurbished.

“A brand new 1000kg lift has been imported from France and will be operational within a few weeks’ time,” Sohaib informed. “A brand new steel railing has already been fitted while work at public toilets is almost complete.”

The 32,000-capacity stadium has 15,000 seats in the general enclosure while the VIP enclosures named after the legendary Hanif Mohammad and Javed Miandad can accommodate 4300 spectators each.

Outside, the entrance is being improved with the roads leading up to it set to be carpeted while the Sindh Government has helped in removing the wild growth and bushes inside the premises to increase parking facilities for another 250 to 300 vehicles.

Karachi catches cricket fever as PSL showdown draws closer

KARACHI: The Pakistan Super League (PSL) final is scheduled to take place in this city on March 25, creating massive excitement among its residents who have not gone to the National Stadium for a cricket match for several years.
“My son asks me every day if I have bought the PSL tickets,” said Salman Siddiqui, who works with a local firm, while talking to Arab News. “It is not about which teams will qualify for the final. We just want to watch the match in the stadium.”

Siddiqui’s sentiment is echoed everywhere in Karachi. The last cricket match played in this city was between Pakistan and Sri Lanka in February 2009.

Surprisingly, the people of Karachi have not lost their enthusiasm for the game. If anything, they have been craving matches during this period.

Most cricket fans remain glued to their television screens when a cricket tournament takes place. Some even arrange public viewings of thrilling international contests by setting up big screens in their neighborhoods.

At the moment, the city’s squad, Karachi Kings, is dominating the PSL play-offs. Meeran, who studies at a private university, is happy about it since he believes his side will not only play the final but also lift the trophy.

“It’s really great that the PSL final will be played in our city,” Ahad, another student, told Arab News. “This will greatly enhance the entertainment factor.”

Another cricket buff, Farhan, said the PSL final would signify the resumption of international cricket in the port city. “The event will tell the world that Karachi is a safe place for such sporting events,” he said. “They will also realize that you can’t get a more electrified crowd anywhere else in the world.”
But some people believe that PSL tickets are too expensive for the lower middle class. “The starting price of Rs1000 is far too high,” said Syed Asif, adding: “This match is important since it will inspire budding cricketers. Let’s not forget that this city has produced some really big names in the game, such as Hanif Muhammad and Javed Miandad.”

The cricket fever is not confined to young men in Karachi. Pakistan has produced a highly skilled national team of female cricketers in recent years, and the craze for the game cuts across the gender divide.
“Our family members have planned to watch the match together,” Rehana Shahid told Arab News. “We are just waiting for PSL tickets to go up for sale.”

    Entry into the stadium
Despite their passion for the game, most people are not aware how to get match tickets.

“The process is quite simple,” said TCS Director Strategic Planning Adeel Azhar. “People can either get their tickets online from Yayvo.com or visit TCS Express Centers designated for this purpose across the country.”

He said buyers must present their original computerized national identity cards (CNIC) at TCS centers, adding that they can buy a maximum of five tickets per CNIC. In case of an online purchase, the original CNIC must be presented at the time of delivery.

“The sale of tickets for the final will be announced soon,” said Azhar.
The TCS official told Arab News that tickets for the final would be available in the denominations of Rs1000, Rs4000, Rs8000 and Rs12000. Meanwhile, tickets for the eliminators in Lahore are available for Rs1000, Rs2000, Rs4000 and Rs6000.

According to the official documents of Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) available with Arab News, the National Stadium has a capacity of 32,044. Out of that number, 8,017 seats will be sold online while 24,027 tickets will be available at TCS centers.

    Security arrangements
According to Sindh Home Minister Sohail Anwar Siyal, the authorities have made stringent security measures for the PSL final.
“We have already chalked out a security plan and shared it with relevant people,” he told Arab News. “It will be strictly implemented.”

He added that security consultants were satisfied with the plan. “The extraordinary, comprehensive and successful security arrangements will not only earn us international appreciation but also prove that international cricket can make a comeback in Pakistan,” he said.
Governor Sindh Muhammad Zubair made a similar claim to Arab News. “We have made foolproof security arrangements for the final match. Law enforcement agencies, administration and all civic bodies are closely working together to make this event a success,” he said.

Meanwhile, Salahuddin Sallu, adviser to PCB Chairman, told the newspaper that the stadium would be handed over to the cricket board 12 days before the match.
“The ground and pitch are in excellent condition. The dressing room has been upgraded. New washrooms have been constructed. For the first time elevators have been installed so that elderly people may also enjoy the match,” he said.

“The people of Karachi have not seen their favorite cricket players in action for the past nine years,” he added. “Now is their chance to enjoy the game once again. In fact, people from nearby cities are also likely to benefit from this opportunity.”
