An all-round effort by Ammad Butt and a sparkling 99 by Umar Akmal helped Balochistan defeat Sindh by 72 runs for their second successive victory in the Mughal Steel Pakistan Cup 2019 at the Pindi Cricket Stadium, Rawalpindi, on Thursday.

Ammad followed up his 18-ball 42 with five fours and two sixes, that lifted Balochistan to 346 for nine in 50 overs, to return with figures of three for 58 as Sindh were dismissed for 274 in 44.2 overs. He was later adjudged player of the match.

In Sindh’s run-chase, Umar Siddiq gave an early impetus when he scored 88 from 64 balls with 12 fours and two sixes, before he was run out.

Umar Siddiq added 92 runs for the second wicket with Ahsan Ali (42), while Umar Amin (60, 68b, 8x4) and Aamer Yamin (46, 41b, 5x4, 1x6) put on 93 runs for the sixth wicket after Sindh had slumped from 149 for one to 164 for five.

However, Aamer’s departure at the score of 257 in the 39th triggered a final collapse for Sindh as they were dismissed for 274 in the 45th over.

Apart from Ammad Butt, Mohammad Irfan took two for 58 as Balochistan moved to the top with two wins.

Earlier in the day, Balochistan built their 346 for nine at the back of another power-packed performance by Umar Akmal after they were sent into bat.

The right-hander hit six sixes and seven fours in his blistering 99-run knock that came off 66 balls. Umar was unfortunate to miss-out on a second consecutive century by one-run when he was bowled off an inside edge by Rahat Ali.

Before Umar and Ammad’s exploits, captain Asad Shafiq (53) and opener Zeeshan Ashraf (75) added 100 runs for the second-wicket. Asad hit four fours and two sixes in a 47-ball innings, while Zeeshan’s run-a-ball 75 was laced with nine fours and a six.

Rawalpindi, 6 April 2019: Sindh bounced back strongly in the Mughal Steel Pakistan Cup 2019 with a resounding 85-run win over defending champions Federal Areas at the Pindi Cricket Stadium, Rawalpindi, on Saturday.

This was Umar Gul-led Sindh’s first win in the tournament, while second successive defeat for Federal Areas have made their task of retaining the title extremely difficult.

On Saturday, Sindh, electing to bat first, posted a mammoth 385 for four in 50 overs, with Ahsan Ali hitting a polished 115. He faced 102 balls and struck 16 fours and two sixes.

Ahsan dominated a 203-run second wicket partnership with Sahibzada Farhan after Umar Siddiq had departed at the score of 11. The partnership ended when Ahsan became one of the two Bilal Asif wickets, as the off-spinner ended up with two for 81.

Sahibzada Farhan joined Ahsan in the dressing room four runs later, but not before scoring a fine 92-ball 82 with 12 fours.

The decisive unbroken fifth partnership between Umar Amin and Hammad Azam yielded 126 runs, which helped Sindh to lift from 259 for four in 40.1 overs to finish at 385 for four in 50 overs.

Umar Amin slapped four fours and five sixes in a 46-ball 69 not out, while Hammad Azam’s 35-ball 78-run cameo included 10 fours and three sixes.

Chasing 386 for victory, Federal Areas, were pegged down by captain Umar Gul as they were reduced to 118 for five in 17 overs.

At that stage, Rameez Raja Junior and Mohammad Nawaz held the innings together to take the score to 240 by adding 122 runs for the sixth wicket. However, Hammad Azam dismissed Nawaz and Rameez on successive deliveries and then added the wicket of Bilal Asif as the Federal Area were bowled out for 300 in 43 overs with Hammad finishing with figures of four for 57.

Rameez was Federal Areas’ top scorer with a 62-ball 70 with six fours and three sixes, while Nawaz contributed 55 off 51 balls with three fours and as many sixes. Saud Shakeel was the only batsman from the upper half of the batting line-up to show some grit when he scored 52 from 37 balls with nine fours.

Umar Gul grabbed the wickets of both the Federal Areas’ openers as well as the last-wicket to finish with figures of three for 30.

    Scores in brief:

Sindh beat Federal Areas by 85 runs

Sindh 385-4, 50 overs (Ahsan Ali 115, Sahibzada Farhan 83, Hammad Azam 78 not out, Umar Amin 69 not out; Bilal Asif 2-81)

Iftikhar Ahmed's unbeaten century gives Punjab maiden victory

    Scorecard - https://www.pcb.com.pk/live/match/32581.html

Rawalpindi, 8 April 2019: Iftikhar Ahmed scored his second successive century of the Mughal Steel Pakistan Cup 2019 as Punjab defeated defending champions Federal Areas at the Pindi Cricket Stadium, Rawalpindi, on Monday.

Iftikhar’s 109 not out (89 balls, six fours, six sixes) was the cornerstone of his side’s first victory, and despite the result, Punjab are out of contention for a place in Friday’s final (April 12) with a mere two points from three games. Punjab’s last match is against Sindh on 11 April.

This was Federal Areas’ third defeat in as many matches, which has also ended their hopes of defending the title. Their last match is against Balochistan on 10 April.

Set a 322-run target, Punjab made a shaky start when Kamran Akmal and Khurram Manzoor perished in quick succession after a 47-run opening stand. Kamran fell for 15 to pacer Khurram Shehzad, while Khurram Manzoor was dismissed by Mohammad Nawaz for a 47-ball 39 that included seven fours.

The run-chase was revived by Sami Aslam and Iftikhar as the pair added 116 runs for the third wicket, before Sami was sent packing by Asad Afridi for a 73-ball 81. The left-hander’s innings included 10 fours.

Sami, however, had provided a launching pad for Iftikhar, who took control of the chase with calculated stroke play. The right-hander found a capable partner in Saad Ali and the two guided their side home with consummate ease as Federal Areas’ bowlers capitulated against the onslaught.

Saad scored 76 not out off 50 balls with the help of 11 fours and one six. The two added 146 runs for the unbroken fourth wicket partnership as Punjab overhauled the target in 46.4 overs.

Earlier, Federal Areas, put into bat, got off to a solid start as openers Ahmad Shehzad and Israrullah built a 157-run opening partnership. The duo looked untroubled and well set when off-spinner Waleed Ahmed struck. Waleed sent Ahmad back for 74 (78 balls, 11 fours, one six) to trigger a mini-collapse.

After dismissing Ahmad, Waleed got rid of Saud Shakeel (2), Mohammad Rizwan (13) and Israrullah 96 (95 balls, 11 fours, one six) in quick successions. Sohaib Maqsood and Mohammad Nawaz repaired the damage with a 59-run sixth wicket partnership, before Nawaz fell for 25 (28 balls, four fours).

Sohaib took the attack to the bowlers in the last few overs before he was sent back by an express Mohammad Sami yorker. Sohaib’s 55 included two fours and five sixes, he faced 45 balls. Asad Afridi (16) and Bilal Asif (19) took the score past the 300-run mark.

Federal Areas were bowled out for 321 in 49.4 overs, Waleed took four wickets, conceding 59 runs in his 10 overs while Sami took three for 69 in his quota of 10.

    Scores in brief:

Punjab beat Federal Areas by six wickets

Federal Areas 321 all out in 49.4 overs (Israrullah 96, Ahmad Shehzad 74, Sohaib Maqsood 55; Waleed Ahmed 4-59, Mohammad Sami 3-69)

Punjab 327 for 3 in 46.4 overs (Iftikhar Ahmed 109 not out, Sami Aslam 81, Saad Ali 76 not out, Khurram Manzoor 39, Khurram Shehzad 1-32)

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan qualify for Pakistan Cup final

    Scorecard
    - https://www.pcb.com.pk/pakistan-cup-2019/match/32582.html

Rawalpindi, 9 April 2019: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa won a closely fought Mughal Steel Pakistan Cup 2019 match against Sindh by nine runs at the Pindi Cricket Stadium, Rawalpindi, on Tuesday to seal their place in Friday’s final. The result meant Balochistan also progressed to the championship match irrespective of how their Wednesday’s match against Federal Areas pans out.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, winners of the inaugural event in 2016, finished their four matches with seven points (three wins and one no-result). Balochistan are sitting on five points from three matches. Sindh and Punjab, who will go head to head on Thursday, and Federal Areas have two points apiece.

The feature of the day was Khushdil Shah’s second century of the tournament, which lifted Khyber Pakhtunkhwa from a precarious position of 120 for four to 300 all out in 50 overs. In turn, Sindh finished at 291 for nine after Zohaib Khan and Wahab Riaz shared five wickets between them conceding 50 and 46 runs, respectively.

Khushdil, who had scored 154 not out against Punjab last week, was dismissed after scoring 100 that came off 65 balls and included eight fours and five sixes. The left-hander now leads the batting table with 314 runs from four matches.

Mohammad Saad was the other notable run-scorer for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa when he scored 69 off 86 balls with six fours and a six. Adil Amin contributed 23, while Sohail Khan struck two sixes in a 20-ball 22.

For Sindh, Hammad Azam and Mohammad Ilyas equally shared six wickets between them, conceding 60 and 66 runs.

In their run-chase, half-centuries by Umar Siddiq and Imran Rafiq, and a rapid 33-ball 42 with five fours and a six by Asif Ali, were not enough to take Sindh home as they ended up nine runs short of victory by finishing at 291 for nine.

Opener Umar belted 10 fours in a 65-ball 60, while Imran returned unbeaten on 61 from 69 balls with eight fours. Other useful contributions came from Hammad Azam (24) and Sahibzada Farhan (22).

Khushdil Shah was later declared player of the match.

    Scores in brief:

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa beat Sindh by nine runs

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa 300 all out in 50 overs (Khushdil Shah 100, Mohammad Saad 69; Hammad Azam 3-60, Mohammad Ilyas 3-66)

Balochistan top Pakistan Cup 2019 standings

    Scorecard - https://www.pcb.com.pk/pakistan-cup-2019/match/32583.html

Rawalpindi, 10 April 2019: Balochistan maintained their unbeaten run in the Mughal Steel Pakistan Cup 2019 with a 23-run win over Federal Areas at the Pindi Cricket Stadium, Rawalpindi, on Wednesday.

Balochistan defended a 290-run target with a disciplined bowling effort as Federal Areas were bowled out for 266 in 46.1 overs. The win meant Balochistan ended the round matches on top of the standings with seven points from four games with the last match between Sindh and Punjab remaining.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (Balochistan’s opponents in the 12 April final) also have seven points from as many games, but Balochistan occupy the top spot due to their better net run-rate. The luckless Federal Areas lost all four games.

Federal Areas started their chase positively as openers Ahmad Shehzad (44, 36 balls, seven fours) and Israrullah (31, 41 balls, 6 fours) added 76 in 12 overs. Ahmad was dismissed by Ali Imran, with Israrullah following him shortly at the score of 86.

Saud Shakeel scored 40 (58 balls, two fours) and added 87 runs for the third wicket with captain Mohammad Rizwan. Federal Areas lost Sohaib Maqsood (seven) cheaply, while Rizwan’s dismissal for 76 (67 balls, nine fours) with 72 needed for a win, turned the game in Balochistan’s favour.

The lower-order failed to offer much resistance other than Nihal Mansoor who scored 22. Ammad Butt took three wickets for the victorious side.

Earlier, half-centuries by captain Asad Shafiq, Ali Imran and Umar Akmal were the highlights of Balochistan’s innings after openers Awais Zia (13) and Zeeshan Ashraf (2) fell inside the first 19 balls of the match.

Asad added 151-runs for the third wicket with Ali Imran before he was run-out for 72 (83 balls, eight fours, one six), while Ali was dismissed after contributing 77 (85 balls five fours, four sixes).

Umar Akmal gave the innings a much-needed impetus with a 45-ball 77, the right-hander hit six fours and four sixes before his dismissal in the 45th over.

Umar is now at top of the Mughal Steel Pakistan Cup batting charts with 319 runs in four games, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Khushdil Shah has 314, also from four games.

After Umar’s departure, the late-order caved in as Balochistan were bowled out for 289 in 49 overs. For Federal Areas left-arm seamer Sadaf Hussain took four wickets for 46 runs from seven overs.

    Scores in brief:

Balochistan beat Federal Areas by 23 runs

Balochistan 289 all out in 49 overs (Umar Akmal 77, Ali Imran 77, Asad Shafiq 72; Sadaf Hussain 4-46 Khurram Shehzad 2-42)
