LONDON: England captain Eoin Morgan feels Pakistan are one of the strongest contenders for the upcoming ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2019 that starts on 30 May, reported ICC.

Pakistan were recently clean-swept 5-0 by Australia in the United Arab Emirates, and questions were raised over the team’s preparedness for the upcoming World Cup. However, Morgan feels that Pakistan are the ‘second or third favourites’ for the tournament.

“[The Pakistan series] is a nice way to ease into the summer and get some really good, competitive cricket going,” said Morgan. “Pakistan are probably second or third favourites for the tournament.

“They hold the Champions Trophy – playing extremely well to win that, in England – so it’s a series we’re all looking forward to.”

“Over the four years we’ve been together, we have had so many guys who have contributed to the position we find ourselves,” Morgan reflected.

“We’ve gone past a 15-man squad of guys who can contribute into probably an 18-, 19-man squad who could all easily be selected for the final 15. And one benefit from having the Pakistan series in the build-up is that guys who are in form will get opportunities to stake their claim for World Cup positions.”

You're right Eoin, 2nd or 3rd favourites, lol

For us, a lot will depend on Fakhar, Bobby, Hafeez, Hassan and Shaheen.

We will depend more on Imam than Fakhar in my opinion! Fakhar gets out often trying to play expensive shots whereas Imam is the glue in this batting at the top!!

He could mean anything.... he didn't specifically mention 2nd or 3rd favorites to "win the world cup".

Imam's glue mostly helps oppositions and even when he bats 50 overs, they will fancy their chances. Imams job can easily be done by babar who is more consistent and likely to bat at a better rate.

Compare that to fakhar, even if he bats 20 overs, we will be favourites on 9 out of 10 times.

Im not disregarding Imam's work but Fakhar is a genuine match winner whereas Imam is a workhorse.

Same lik CT, Pakistan chances will depend on Fakhar and Hassan performances. @KingOfDoosra @shahzad firdous

When has Fakhar ever batted 20 overs against a non-minnow apart from against India in the final?

Pakistan's issue has always been fall of early wickets on English pitches. Even if we score 150 by 35 overs as long as we have wickets in hand we will always do well - despite our poor power hitting.

He was clearly talking about the England series. Pakistan are 2nd or 3rd favourites to win the bilateral ODI series against England.

Fakhar is a match winner no doubt but he will play 2 to 3 innings in the tournament that will singlehandedly win games but Imam will be the one more consistent than Fakhar and put runs regularly on the board! Everybody is assigned a role in the batting. Fakhar's job is to provide a quick start whereas its Imam's job to play anchor role. Similarly, Babar plays his natural game. Then, the middle order Harris and Malik milks the spinners. Since Malik, Hafeez and Harris Sohail are all fit and available therefore Imam might have to sit out and one of Harris or Hafeez will open the batting with Fakhar and their role will be an important one similar to Imam's!
