Yasir Shah on verge of another milestone

Pakistan’s superstar leg-spinner Yasir Shah is all set to achieve another milestone, as he is just a wicket away from becoming the fastest spinner to take 150 wickets in Test cricket history.

Yasir Shah burst on to the scene in 2014 and just after 13 games he became No.1 bowler in International Cricket Council (ICC) Test rankings. He picked up 86 wickets during that session.

That was not it, Australian legend Shane Warne was so impress with his talent that he offered him coaching and had a few session with the 31-year-old.

And, now he is on the verge of becoming the fasted spinner to take 150 wickets in the Test cricket. He could also level the record of the great Waqar Younis, who achieved the same fiat in just 27 Test matches.

Yasir has so far played 26 games and picked up 149 wickets with best figures of 7/76.

It is pertinent to mention here that, the record is currently held by the magician himself Saeed Ajmal. He completed 150 wickets in just 29 matches.

    Yasir's 150 in quick time

Yasir Shah became the quickest spinner in Test history in terms of number of matches played to take 150 Test wickets. Australia's Clarrie Grimmett, also a legspinner like Yasir, was the previous quickest to the landmark having taken 28 matches. Three offspinners - South Africa's Hugh Tayfield, Pakistan's Saeed Ajmal and India's R Ashwin - complete the top five.

here for a list of the quickest bowlers to 150 Test wickets.

In spite of bowling largely in conditions that haven't always been helpful to spinners, Yasir manages to rank third among spinners who are the fastest in terms of the number of balls to collect 150 dismissals. He has taken just 15 deliveries more than the number of balls R Ashwin took to reach the landmark. Stuart MacGill is the quickest spinner having taken 8312 deliveries.

Yasir has achieved this milestone in just two years and 341 days from his Test debut. Only two other bowlers - England's Graeme Swann and Australia's Mitchell Johnson - have been quicker than Yasir in terms of time taken from debut to reach this landmark. While Johnson took just two years and 129 days from debut, Swann took two years and 250 days.

So consistent has been Hasan Ali’s form in the last few months that he has remarkably picked up three wickets minimum on seven occasions in Pakistan’s last eight matches.

This run started in the ICC Champions Trophy where he was the highest wicket-taker claiming 13 wickets in the five games to lead Pakistan’s charge to the title.

He has continued that excellent showing in the ongoing ODI series with Sri Lanka with his 1-32 in the first match being his worst return in the past eight games.

Not only that, Ali also has three five-wicket hauls in 2017 so far with one each against Sri Lanka, Australia and the West Indies. This makes him only the fourth Pakistan bowler to do so in a calendar year with Shahid Afridi being the last to achieve the feat in 2011.

These are the joint 2nd most for any fast bowler in a 5-match bilateral ODI series. Jasprit Bumrah picked up 15 wickets in the recent series against Sri Lanka while Clint McKay also picked 14 in 2009 against Pakistan.

14 – Hasan Ali’s 14 wickets are the 2nd most for a Pakistan bowler in a bilateral series. Naved-ul-Hasan picked up 15 wickets in a 6-match ODI series against India in 2005 which was played in India.

Another ODI record in sight for Babar Azam

Ever since Babar Azam made his debut in international cricket, he has been in prime form, especially in limited overs cricket. In 35 One Day Internationals, the Lahore-born cricketer has racked up as many as 7 centuries and 7 half-centuries at a staggering average of 58.60.

In the T20I format, he boasts off an average of 54 and a handsome strike-rate of 126. In the recent ODI series against Sri Lanka, the right-handed batsman has performed exceptionally well, racking up 303 runs at an astounding average of 101.

Recently, Azam became the first ever batsman to score 5 consecutive ODI centuries in a particular nation, breaking AB de Villiers’ record of 4 centuries in India from 2010 to 2011. He achieved the feat when he piled on 101 in the second ODI at Abu Dhabi. Meanwhile, he also became the fastest to 7 ODI centuries in 33 games, overhauling Hashim Amla’s record in 41 matches.

Yet another record in the offing
Moving forward, there’s another record to pounce on for the Pakistani middle-order batsman. If Azam scores 242 runs in his next four innings, he would become the fastest batsman to 2000 runs in One Day Internationals.

Hashim Amla achieved the feat in a mere 40 innings, which manifests the caliber of the individual. Babar Azam is currently sitting at 1758 runs in 35 innings and with the kind of form he is in, there’s every possibility for the youngster to clinch the record.

An opportunity to enter into an elite list
There are some big names featuring the list, including the legendary Pakistan batsman- Zaheer Abbas. The list also comprises the likes of Sir Vivian Richards, Gordon Greenidge, Alistair Cook and Gary Kirsten. Babar Azam has simply been a revelation of Pakistan in the limited-overs formats.

If he can manage the required runs in 4 innings, it will only be another feather in the hat of what has been an awe-inspiring career for Babar Azam till date.

Here’s the elite list of cricketers who achieved the landmark in double quick time

Most consecutive bilateral series won by a team in T20I cricket:

In the past 15-20 months, Pakistan lost the ODI series in England and Australia but went on to stun the world by crushing India in the Champions Trophy final to clinch this ICC event for the first time. On the same tour, Pakistan won one-off T20I in England, home and away T20I series against Windies and the Independence Cup against World XI for the revival of International cricket in Pakistan, all in a row. Thus, by winning this series against Sri Lanka, Pakistan have emerged as the first ever team to win five consecutive bilateral series in T20I cricket.

Between 2008 and 2009, they won four consecutive bilateral series to become the first team to achieve the feat. After them, four teams won four consecutive bilateral T20I series but none before Pakistan managed to convert it to five consecutive series wins.

Waqar Younis’ International career in numbers

Waqar Younis, captain of Pakistan, celebrates with team-mates after dismissing James Foster of British Universities in the friendly match at Trent Bridge, Nottingham. (Photo by: Mike Finn-Kelcey/Allsport)

Waqar Younis was one of the many fastest bowlers Pakistan have produced but unlike most, he went on to make a prominent name for himself in the history of the game, with the art of swinging the ball and reversing it as well. Waqar began his career at an early age and played for the nation for nearly 15 years and served as the captain as well.

A day after his 18th birthday, Waqar made his Test debut along with Sachin Tendulkar and ended his career as one of the greats of the format and also bagged numerous records in ODI cricket as well.

Here are the records and achievements that Waqar Younis accomplished in his career.
1.608 – Pakistan’s win/loss ratio in ODI cricket under Waqar is their 2nd best under any captain. (Min: 25 wins) Wasim Akram had a win/loss ratio of 1.609. Under Waqar’s captaincy, Pakistan won 37 and lost 23 out of 62 ODI games.

3 – Number of consecutive five-wicket hauls that he picked up in ODI cricket in 1990. He is the only bowler to take three consecutive 5-fers in ODIs. He also picked up three consecutive 4-fers in ODIs on three different occasions. Seven other bowlers have taken three consecutive ODI 4-fers but no one has done it on more than one occasion.

7/36 – Waqar is the only player in ODI cricket to take seven wickets in a game as captain. He recorded the figures of 10-0-36-7 against England at Leeds in 2001.

13 – Number of 5-wicket hauls he picked in ODI cricket. These are the most number of ODI 5-fers for any player. His 27 four-wicket hauls are also the most for any player in this format.

13/135 – His match figures of 13/135 in a Test match against Zimbabwe in 1993 are the 2nd best for any player as a captain. He recorded the figures of 10-0-36-7 against England at Leeds in 2001.

17 – Waqar led Pakistan in 17 Test matches with all of them producing a result. Pakistan won ten of them and lost seven. No other captain has a similar statistic in Tests. Brendon Taylor led Zimbabwe in 13 Tests off which his team lost ten and won three.

18y 164d – The age when he bagged a 5-wicket haul in an ODI against Sri Lanka in 1990. He is the youngest bowler in ODI cricket to claim a 5-fer. He recorded the figures of 6/26 against the Lankans and 5/20 against the Kiwis two days later.

30.5 – He has a bowling strike rate of 30.5 in ODI cricket which is the 2nd best for any bowler with a minimum of 300 wickets. Brett Lee had a SR of 29.4 with the ball in this format.

43.5 – His bowling strike rate of 43.5 is the 2nd best for any bowler in Test cricket with a minimum of 200 wickets. Dale Steyn has a career SR of 41.45 at the moment.

103 – Number of wickets Waqar had to his name in Internationals before turning 19. He is one of the two players with 100 International wickets before turning 19. Afghanistan’s Rashid Khan picked up 105 wickets as a teenager. Waqar’s 55 ODI wickets before his 19th birthday is also the 2nd most behind Rashid’s 63 while his 48 Test wickets are the 2nd most after Pakistan’s Mohammad Amir (51).

789 – Number of wickets he preyed in International cricket. These are the 2nd most number of wickets by a Pakistan player after Wasim Akram (916) across formats. Waqar’s Test and ODI wickets of 373 and 416 respectively are also the 2nd most by a Pakistan player after Wasim 414 and 502.

1010 – Runs he scored in Test cricket. The former Pakistan pacer is the only player to have scored 1000 Test runs without a score of 50+. His International tally of 1979 runs is also the highest among the players without a fifty-plus score.

Afridi achieves another record for Pakistan

Pakistan star all-rounder Shahid Afridi, is shining at the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), as his picked up 4 wickets for Dhaka Dynamites against the Rajshahi Kings on Saturday.

Afridi four for 26 was his second 4-wicket haul in the ongoing tournament and 11th such feat in the T20 cricket. Afridi now boost the most 4-wicket haul by any Pakistani bowler, and sits with West Indies spinner Sunil Narine at second place.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka’s Lasith Malinga tops the list with twelve 4-wicket hauls in T20 cricket.

The former captain of Pakistan claimed opening batsman Mominul Haque, and the dangerous wicket-keeper batsman Mushfiqur Rahim, in his spell of four overs. Earlier, the all-rounder achieved a famous victory for his side, when he destroyed the Sylhet Sixers, taking four wickets and struck five sixes in his 15-ball 37.

Afridi will next be seen at the upcoming T10 League in UAE, where he will be leading the Pakhtoons team.

Pakistan fast bowler Hasan Ali added another feat to his blooming career after becoming only the second bowler in T20 history to dismiss five batsmen bowled in a match.

The feat was achieved on Monday at the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), where Hasan, representing the Comilla Victorians, bamboozled the batting line of the Dhaka Dynamites. The number one ODI bowler showcased his skill at Dhaka with impressive bowling figures of 5 for 20, as Dynamites crumble to 128 in 19 overs.

Initially, Hasan crushed the Dynmanites top order claiming the wickets of Evin Lewis and Mehedi Maruf for 7 and 0, respectively. The Pakistani speedster then returned with a bang in the later part of the inning as he crushed the Dynamites tail picking up Mosaddek Hussain, Mohammad Saddam and Abu Hider on 1,1 and 0, respectively, to complete his five-wicket haul.

Kamran Akmal becomes first Pakistani to score four consecutive 50s in T20s

KARACHI: Out-of-favour wicket-keeper batsman Kamran Akmal on Tuesday became the first ever Pakistan cricketer to score four consecutive 50s in T20 innings.

The 35-year-old batsman smashed three sixes and stroked four boundaries to score 52 off 40 deliveries, his 4th half-century in four consecutive innings of the national T20 tournament.

Kamran, representing Lahore Whites, had earlier scored 65 against Rawalpindi, 63 against FATA and 52 against Karachi Whites.

The knock on Tuesday made him the first Pakistani cricketer to score four consecutive fifties in four consecutive innings, jointly the second largest streak of consecutive T20 50s.

Kamran joined 15 other batsmen from around the world who have scored four consecutive 50s, and is just one short of the record of five consecutive fifties, jointly held by Sehwag and Masakadza.

While India’s Virat Kohli has achieved the feat of four consecutive T20 fifties twice in his career, other batsmen joined by Kamran Akmal are M Rawat, Shaiman Anwar, Usman Khawaja, Martin Guptil, Kevin Pietersen, M Klinger, HE van der Dussen, A Rahane, C Kieswetter, Sikandar Raza, Chris Gayle, M Trescothick, JL Denly and LA Carseldine.

Kamran last played for Pakistan during the tour to West Indies earlier this year, after making a comeback to the side, however, he couldn’t impress the selectors with his comeback and was not retained for the Champions Trophy.

He has played 53 Tests, 157 ODIs and 58 T20Is for Pakistan since making his international debut in 2002.
