De Villiers, Hasan Ali move up to top of ODI rankings

Babar, Mushfiqur, Lakmal and Phehlukwayo among others to gain in latest rankings.
South Africa batsman AB de Villiers has once again grabbed the top position in the MRF Tyres ICC ODI Player Rankings while Pakistan’s Hasan Ali has emerged as a new number one among bowlers in the latest ranking updates carried out on Friday.

    hassan-ali-lahiru-gamage_3587bcd8-b5a0-11e7-8b25-96a837358dfc copy.jpg

An astonishing knock of 176 by de Villiers in the second ODI against Bangladesh in Paarl, which consisted of 15 fours and seven sixes and came off only 104 balls, has also helped South Africa edge India at the top of the MRF Tyres ICC ODI Team Rankings by taking a 2-0 winning lead in the three-match series.

The latest rankings, which take into account the first two matches of the South Africa-Bangladesh series and the first three matches of the ongoing Pakistan-Sri Lanka series in the United Arab Emirates, sees de Villiers climb to the top of the ODI table for the 14th time in his career.

De Villiers, who has leapfrogged Australian David Warner and India captain Virat Kohli, had first attained top position on 30 May 2010 and the number of days he has spent at the top is second most after retired Windies great Vivian Richards. De Villiers has now been at the top for 2,124 days while Richards was number one for 2,306 days.

Other batsmen to move up include Pakistan’s Babar Azam (up two places to a career-best fourth position), the South African pair of Quinton de Kock (up three places to fifth) and Hashim Amla (up two places to ninth), and Bangladesh’s Mushfiqur Rahim (up five places to 18th).

Among bowlers, Hasan Ali’s haul of five for 34 in the third ODI against Sri Lanka in Abu Dhabi, which his team won by seven wickets for a decisive 3-0 lead in the five-match series, has given the pace bowler a big boost in ranking points.

The 23-year-old, who has taken nine wickets in the series so far, has moved up six places to become the fifth bowler at the top of the ODI rankings this year after Trent Boult, Imran Tahir, Kagiso Rabada and Josh Hazlewood.

Outside of the top 20, Sri Lanka’s Suranga Lakmal (up three places to 36th), South Africa’s Andile Phehlukwayo (up 30 places to 52nd) and Bangladesh’s Rubel Hossain (up seven places to 61st) are the other bowlers to move northwards.

Pakistan’s Mohammad Hafeez is back as the top all-rounder, edging Bangladesh’s Shakib Al Hasan. Hafeez, who first attained top ranking in January 2013, has reached the top spot for the ninth time.

Meanwhile, India will be looking to wrest back the top spot in the team rankings when they take on New Zealand in an upcoming three-match series.

South Africa and India are both on 120 points with South Africa ahead on decimal points. South Africa can reach 121 points if they complete a 3-0 series win over Bangladesh but India will overtake them if they win the opening match against New Zealand, to be played the same day as the last South Africa-Bangladesh match, on 22 October.

Pakistan now sets sights on direct qualification for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019

With the holding of the ICC Test Championship mace an event of the distant past, former world champion Pakistan sets its sights on direct qualification for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 when it takes on the in-form reigning world champion and number-one ranked Australia in a five-ODI series starting in Brisbane on Friday.

Pakistan is presently in serious danger of failing to qualify directly for the ICC’s pinnacle 50-over tournament in the United Kingdom as it is sitting in eighth position on 89 points – two behind Bangladesh and two ahead of the West Indies.

Host England and the seven highest-ranked sides on the MRF Tyres ICC ODI Team Rankingsas on 30 September 2017 will qualify directly for the event proper to be held from 30 May to 15 July 2019. The four bottom-ranked sides will be joined by six teams from the ICC World Cricket League in the 10-team ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier 2018 and the top two sides will complete the 10-team World Cup line-up.

To, at least, maintain its pre-series ranking points, Pakistan needs to win one match of the series, while victories in more than one match will earn it crucial points.

If Pakistan wins two matches, then it will join Bangladesh on 91 points but will be ranked behind its Asian rivals by a fraction. In the scenario of Pakistan winning the series, it will move ahead of Bangladesh and, as such, will enhance its chances of qualifying directly for the event it won in Australia in 1992.

On the other side of the coin, Australia will retain its pre-series points if it wins the series 4-1, while it will concede one point if it wins 3-2. Australia can fall from the top pedestal but to make it happen, Pakistan will have to win by 4-1 or better. However, considering that Australia leads Pakistan 33-16 on a head-to-head in its backyard, including 15 wins in 19 ODIs this decade, this looks highly improbable.

The ODI team rankings, unlike the Test rankings, are updated after each match and the ODI predictor function is available here.

Meanwhile, third-ranked India takes on fifth-ranked England in a three-ODI series starting in Pune on Sunday, 15 January. While India will be aiming to narrow the gap with second-ranked South Africa, England will be targeting an upward movement.

India can rise to as high as 114 points if it sweeps the series, but if the series result is reversed, then England can move up one place to fourth and India can slide to fifth.

In the MRF Tyres ICC ODI Player Rankings, newly appointed India captain Virat Kohli has number-one ranked AB de Villiers of South Africa firmly within his sights. The Delhi batsman, who led India to victory in the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup 2008 in Malaysia, trails the South Africa star by 13 points.

David Warner, who destroyed Pakistan’s bowling in Sydney, is ranked third – just two points behind Kohli. England’s Joe Root is seventh, whereas Pakistan’s highest-ranked batsman is Babar Azam in 15th position.

Mitchell Starc, who was the Player of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015, will start as the highest-ranked bowler in the upcoming One-Day International matches. He trails New Zealand’s number-one ranked Trent Boult by 13 points.

England’s Adil Rashid will start in fifth position, India’s Amit Mishra will begin in 12th spot and 39th-ranked Wahab Riaz of Pakistan is his side’s highest-ranked bowler.

In evidence of first two games if they played timid like first they won't win any.
If they play with competitive nature then they will win 2 more.
So happy to see Junaid and Imad bowl with passion. Really lifted the whole team.

Also I saw how good Hafeez was.
Saw him clapping and encouraging bowler even while they were getting hit around between fall of wickets

Johannesburg and Wellington Test centurions on the charge in latest MRF Tyres ICC Test Player Rankings

The six centurions from the recently concluded Test matches in Johannesburg and Wellington have been rewarded with impressive movements in the latest MRF Tyres ICC Player Rankings for Test Batsmen, which were released on Tuesday morning.

South Africa’s Hashim Amla, who while scoring 134 became the eighth batsman to score a century in his 100th Test, has jumped four places to claim sixth position, while JP Duminy, who scored 155 and added 292 runs for the third wicket with Amla, has vaulted nine places to secure a career-high 33rd position.

Captain Faf du Plessis and Dean Elgar, who won the player of the series award, finished in joint-21st position.

Fast bowler Kagiso Rabada, who was one of South Africa’s stars in its ICC U19 Cricket World Cup 2014 triumph, stole the bowling limelight when he returned figures of three for 44 and two for 50. For this performance, he has earned a rise of three places which has puts him in fifth position in the MRF Tyres ICC Player Rankings for Test Bowlers.

Radaba is now South Africa’s highest-ranked bowler, one place ahead of Dale Steyn who missed the series due to an injury. Rabada leads Steyn by two points and trails Sri Lanka’s fourth-ranked spinner Rangana Herath by six points.

For Sri Lanka, the only good news is the rise of fast bowler Nuwan Pradeep, who has leaped six places to a career-best 33rd spot following figures of four for 78 in South Africa’s only innings.

South Africa defeated Sri Lanka by an innings and 118 runs in Johannesburg, which gave it a 3-0 series win. The result means third-ranked South Africa has gained four points and has moved up to 107 points, two behind Australia, while seventh-ranked Sri Lanka has dropped four points to finish on 92 points.

The Wellington Test produced some exceptional batting performances from both the sides and these have been duly recognised in the latest Test player rankings.

Shakib Al Hasan, who scored 217 (highest individual score by a Bangladesh batsman in Test cricket) has achieved a career-high ranking of 23rd after jumping eight places, while captain Mushfiqur Rahim, who scored 159 and put on 359 runs for the fifth wicket with Shakib, has risen 10 places to claim 35th position.

New Zealand’s 539-run response to Bangladesh’s 595-8d revolved around left-handed opener Tom Latham who scored 177. This performance is notable in the latest rankings as he has climbed five places to 31st.

After New Zealand was set a victory target of 217 runs, captain Kane Williamson stroked an undefeated 104 to help his side romp home with seven wickets to spare. For this achievement, fourth-ranked Williamson has earned 29 points which has put him just two points shy of third-ranked Joe Root. If Williamson performs strongly at the Hagley Oval, then he will potentially return to number-three ranking.

Although the Test team rankings are updated at the end of a series, New Zealand has placed itself nicely to move ahead of Pakistan in team rankings. However, to make it happen, it will have to win the Christchurch Test which starts on Friday.

If New Zealand wins the Test, then it will move one point ahead of Pakistan, while in case of a draw, it will join Pakistan on 97 points but will be behind by a fraction of a point.

Pakistan hang on to eighth spot in ICC ODI rankings

International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced Sunday latest one-day international (ODI) rankings in which Pakistan are at number eight with 89 points.

West Indies are at number nine with 86 points, which means the competition between two former world champions to qualify for ICC World Cup (WC) 2019 gets tougher.

It is worth mentioning here that ten teams will play WC 2019 and top eight teams by September 30 will qualify in it directly. The remaining two teams will be selected after qualifying round.

In this situation, the upcoming 3-match ODI series between Pakistan and West Indies will play a key role in deciding the top eight teams as the chancesof losing team will drop to qualify for the WC.

Azhar, Younis maintain positions in ICC top ten Test rankings

DUBAI (Daily Dunya) – International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced new Test rankings after Pune Test between Australia and India, and Pakistan’s Azhar Ali and Younis Khan have maintained their positions in ICC top ten Test batsmen.

As per details, Azhar Ali holds seventh spot in ICC Test rankings for batsmen with 779 rating points and Younis Khan is ranked eighth with 772 rating points.

Australia skipper Steve Smith has further widened the gap at the top of the table with 939 rating points to his name, passing Gary Sobers, Viv Richards and Kumar Sangakkara who all share 938 points, after wonderful century against India in second innings of Pune Test. Smith has also achieved career-high rating points which is sixth best ever after Don Bradman (961), Len Hutton (945), Jack Hobbs and Ricky Ponting (both 942) and Peter May (941).

India’s Virat Kohli is 66 points behind Smith with 873 points. England’s joe Root is at third spot with 848 rating points.

When we talk about Test rankings for bowlers, only two Pakistani cricketers are in top twenty. Yasir Shah holds seventeenth place with 649 rating points and Wahab Riaz is nineteenth in the rankings with 579 points.

India’s Ravichandran Ashwin maintains his top spot with 878 rating points followed by Josh Hazlewood (860) and Ravindra Jadeja (860).

Ashwin also tops the all-rounders category with 447 rating points. Shakib Al Hasan (440) is ranked second and Ravindra Jadeja (371) third. Mohammad Hafeez is the only Pakistani in ICC top twenty Test all-rounders holding twelfth spot with 166 points.

Aussies sneak past Proteas on ODI charts

Australia go back to top of ICC rankings with Proteas set for huge series-deciding match against New Zealand

Australia have snuck back into top spot on the International Cricket Council’s one-day international rankings and are back in line to be the No.1 side for the ‘official’ end of the international cricket season.

After losing the No.1 spot to South Africa last month, Australia were handed back pole position by the Proteas after they lost the fourth ODI against New Zealand, thanks to a Martin Guptill masterclass.

If the Black Caps prevail in the fifth and final ODI against South Africa in Auckland on Saturday, Australia will hold off the South Africa for the time being by a fraction of a point and lock up top spot.

But if South Africa win and adjust the series ledger to 3-2 in their favour, they’ll move ahead of Steve Smith’s men.

The stakes are huge for both South Africa and Australia; the team at the top of the ODI rankings come April 1 receives a hefty cheque from the ICC.

South Africa dethroned Australia in February when they sealed a 5-0 series sweep of Sri Lanka on home turf.

Their 11th consecutive win in the 50-over format returned them to the No.1 spot for the first time in two years.

Australia’s lead at the top of the team rankings had been cut to just a fraction of a point following their most recent ODI series, a 0-2 Chappell-Hadlee series defeat in New Zealand.

Taylor ton and Boult six give NZ a series win

It was their last 50-over fixture before the ICC Champions Trophy gets underway in June.

The 2015 World Cup winners have been inconsistent in the one-day game in recent times, losing heavily to South Africa (0-5) and New Zealand (0-2) away while beating the Black Caps (3-0) and Pakistan (4-1) at home this summer.

DUBAI: Indian off spinner Ravindra Jadeja has overtaken his team-mate Ravichandran Ashwin at the top of International Cricket Council (ICC) Test bowler ranking while not a single Pakistani bowler managed to make top 15.

According to the latest MRF Tyres ICC Player Rankings for Test Bowler rankings, Jadeja out bowled his closest competitor Ashwin by picking up nine wickets against touring Australia in the third Test of the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

On the other hand, Sri Lankan great, Rangana Herath climbed up to third spot with impressive display of spin bowling, while Australias Josh Hazlewood slipped down to fourth.

Meanwhile, Englands spearhead James Anderson made his way back to 5th position. However, no Pakistani bowler managed to make his way into top 15 in the rankings. Leggie Yasir Shah was Pakistan best bowler and grabbed 16th spot in the latest rankings.

On the other hand, in the Test Batsmen category, Australian skipper Steven Smith top-ranked and reached a career-high rating of 941 points after scores of 178 in the third Test against India.

The Australia captain's tally is the joint-fifth highest ever along with Peter May. Only Don Bradman (961), Len Hutton (945), Jack Hobbs and Ricky Ponting (942) have achieved higher rating points.

Indias Cheteshwar Pujara too has reason to celebrate as his knock of 202 which helped him to gain second spot in the ranking surpassing his captain Virat Kohli who dropped to fourth spot behind Englands Joe Root.

New Zealand captain Kane Williamson dropped to fifth place in the new rankings. While, Pakistans Azhar Ali and Younis Khan climbed up one spot each to 6th and 7th spot, respectively.

Kohli awarded Test mace as India finish at top, Pakistan at No. 6

India captain Virat Kohli was presented with the Test mace on Tuesday, as his team finished No. 1 in the ICC Test rankings ahead of the April 1 cut-off date.

Kohli was awarded the mace by former India great and ICC Hall of Famer Sunil Gavaskar in Dharamsala, where the hosts defeated Australia in the fourth and final Test to clinch the series 2-1.

Pakistan, who had climbed to the top of the ICC Test rankings in October 2016 for the first time in their history after pulling off a 2-2 draw in Test tour of England in July-August, were taken over by India shortly afterwards. India have retained the top spot ever since.

Pakistan, after suffering defeats in New Zealand and Australia late last year, subsequently dropped to sixth spot.

Australia are ranked second, South Africa third, England fourth, New Zealand fifth, Sri Lanka seventh and West Indies eighth in the Test rankings. Bangladesh and Zimbabwe round up the last two spots, respectively.

In the ICC Test batting rankings, Pakistan batsmen Azhar Ali and Younis Khan are at sixth and seventh spot, respectively. Australia captain Steve Smith tops the rankings, followed by India’s Cheteshwar Pujara at second and England captain Joe Root at third.

The annual update of the MRF Tyres ICC Test Team Rankings will next be carried out on 1 May with the series results from 2013-14 not to be included in the calculations and outcomes from the 2014-15 and 2015-16 series weighted at 50 per cent.

Pakistan’s wrist spinner Shadab Khan has entered in 117th position after producing player of the series performance

Babar, who was the leading run-getter in the four-match series with 137 runs, has rocketed 41 places to a career-high 27th position, while Lewis, who scored 111 runs in the series, has vaulted 40 places to 45th in the latest rankings, which were released on Monday.

Ahmed Shahzad 29th (up by five places), Shoaib Malik 34th (up by three places) and Carlos Brathwaite 109th (up by 35 places) are the other batsmen to improve their rankings in the list which is headed by India’s Virat Kohli.

      Shadab Khan in action
In the bowling table, Pakistan’s wrist spinner Shadab Khan has entered in 117th position after producing player of the series performance. The teenager was the most successful bowler in the series with 10 wickets.

Shadab’s team-mate Imad Wasim has moved up two places to second spot, 15 points behind number-one ranked Imran Tahir, while other bowlers to head in the right direction include Wahab Riaz 40th (up by three places), Marlon Samuels 60th (up by four places) and Carlos Brathwaite 77th (up by 36 places).

In the all-rounders’ list, Samuels has gained one place and is now fourth, while Brathwaite has jumped 31 places to claim 30th position.

Shakib Al Hasan of Bangladesh will defend his number-one ranking in the all-rounders’ list when he will feature in the two-match series against Sri Lanka to be played on Tuesday andThursday in Colombo. Shakib leads Glenn Maxwell of Australia by three points and will put to put in strong performances to finish the series on top of the tree.

Meanwhile, eighth-ranked Sri Lanka (101 points) leads 10th-ranked Bangladesh by 29 points, which trails ninth-ranked Afghanistan (84 points) by 12 points.

If Bangladesh wins both the matches, then Bangladesh will stay in 10th position but will rise to 77 points (seven behind Afghanistan), while Sri Lanka will drop five points to finish at 96 points.

However, if the series result is reversed and Sri Lanka wins 2-0, then it will gain one point and rise to 102 points, while drop one point and end up on 71 points.

Imad Wasim tops ICC T20 bowling rankings

DUBAI - Imad Wasim, Pakistan's spinning all-rounder, tops the new International Cricket Council (ICC) Twenty20 internationals rankings for bowlers, knocking South African spinner Imran Tahir off the top spot.

According to the rankings released by the ICC on June 25, Wasim is the only Pakistani to feature among the top 20 bowlers in the ICC T20I rankings.

Wasim is followed by India's Jasprit Bumrah and South African Imran Tahir in the rankings. None of the Pakistani batsmen have been able to make it to the Top 20 ICC T20I rankings for batsmen topped by Indian captain Virat Kohli.

Bangladesh batsman Sabbir Rahman has broken into the ICC's top 10 rankings for T20I batsmen for the first time. He is currently tenth with 627 points, after the rankings were updated following the T20I series between England and South Africa.

Sabbir, 25, rose in the rankings despite scoring only 117 runs in five innings this year.

Sabbir is the only Bangladesh player after Shakib Al Hasan to break into the top ten rankings for T20I batsmen. Shakib, who is leading the allrounders rankings across all formats at present, achieved the feat in 2012. Mahmudullah, at No. 6, is the only other Bangladesh player among the top ten T20I allrounders.

In the T20I bowling rankings, Mustafizur Rahman is at No. 6, while Shakib is ranked ninth.

In the all-rounder rankings, Bangladesh's Shakib Al Hasan is number one while Mohammad Hafeez and Shoaib Malik are placed at numbers 11 and 15 respectively.

According to the newly-updated rankings, New Zealand are the top T20I side while England now sit alone at number two as Pakistan slip to third place.

ICC T20I Rankings: West Indies overtake India; Evin Lewis climbs to fourth

West Indies moved above India into fourth place in the latest ICC T20I team rankings after their nine-wicket victory over India in the one-off T20I at Jamaica on Sunday. In the player’s rankings, centurion Evin Lewis was the big winner as he moved up to No.4 in the batsmen’s rankings which is still led by Virat Kohli.

India, who were in fourth place before the start of the game, lost three rating points and are now in fifth place with 115 points, just five ahead of sixth-placed Australia. In the space of a few days, India have lost ground in both the ODI and T20I rankings while continuing to reign supreme as the No.1 ranked Test side.

West Indies, who began the match four rating points behind India, got three and are now at 117 points, two ahead of India and just four behind third-placed Pakistan. The return of several key stars for the T20I clash boosted their confidence as they ended the tour with a victory.

New Zealand retained their No.1 ranking and still hold a two-point lead over England, who are in second place and themselves only two ahead of Pakistan who are on 121. The rest of rankings remain unchanged with Australia and South Africa still on 110 points, the former taking sixth place on decimal points.

In the player rankings, courtesy of his unbeaten 125, Evin Lewis made a huge leap as he now occupies fourth spot on the batsmen’s rankings which is still led by Virat Kohli, who strengthened his grip on top spot with a tidy 39. The Indian captain holds a 17-point lead over Australian opener Aaron Finch, who is in second place with New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson rounding off the top three.

In the bowler’s rankings, Imad Wasim remains the No.1 ranked T20I bowler, India’s Jasprit Bumrah, who was rested for the West Indies tour remains in second place, with Imran Tahir in third, Rashid Khan fourth while Samuel Badree dropped to No.5.

The only other Indian in the top ten, Ravichandran Ashwin, retains his 10th spot although he did lose five points after the solitary T20I against West Indies, in which he went for 39 runs in his four overs.

Chance for Sri Lanka and Bangladesh to move up in Test rankings

Sri Lanka will leapfrog Pakistan to sixth position with a win in the series, while South Africa could slip from second to third position if they lose their two-Test home series.
      • South Africa could slip to third position with a series loss to Bangladesh; Chance for Pakistan to bridge gap with Australia and New Zealand.
Sri Lanka get a chance to overtake Pakistan on the MRF Tyres ICC Test Team Rankings table during an upcoming two-match series in the United Arab Emirates starting on Thursday while South Africa could slip from second to third position if they lose their two-Test home series against Bangladesh starting the same day.

Sri Lanka will leapfrog Pakistan to sixth position with even a 1-0 win in the series while Pakistan could gain four points and reach 97 points with a 2-0 series win, the same as New Zealand and Australia, but will be behind on decimal points and remain in sixth position.

Pakistan v Sri Lanka series scenarios:

      • Pakistan beat Sri Lanka 2-0 – Pakistan 97 points, Sri Lanka 86 points
      • Pakistan beat Sri Lanka 1-0 - Pakistan 95 points, Sri Lanka 87 points
      • Series drawn 1-1 or 0-0 – Pakistan 92 points, Sri Lanka 90 points
      • Sri Lanka beat Pakistan 1-0 – Sri Lanka 93 points, Pakistan 89 points
      • Sri Lanka beat Pakistan 2-0 – Sri Lanka 94 points, Pakistan 88 points
The Test team rankings, unlike the ODI and T20I rankings, are updated after the end of the series and the Test predictor function is available here.

In the MRF Tyres ICC Test Player Rankings, Pakistan boast Azhar Ali at number seven among batsmen while captain Sarfraz Ahmed will start his first series as Test captain at 27th position. Among their bowlers, leg-spinner Yasir Shah returns from injury as the team’s leading bowler at 15th rank while pace bowler Wahab Riaz is the next on the rankings table in 25th position.

For Sri Lanka, Kusal Mendis (24th) and Dinesh Chandimal (33rd) are the leading batsmen according to the rankings while left-arm spinner Rangana Herath (fourth), Dilruwan Perera (27th) and Nuwan Pradeep (34th) are the lead bowlers.

In South Africa, even a drawn series will help Bangladesh overtake the Windies to eighth position on the points table since only one point separates these two sides. On the other hand, South Africa have the danger of slipping behind England with even a 1-0 loss.

South Africa v Bangladesh series scenarios:

      • South Africa beat Bangladesh 2-0 – South Africa 111 points, Bangladesh 72 points
      • South Africa beat Bangladesh 1-0 – South Africa 109 points, Bangladesh 74 points
      • Series drawn 1-1 or 0-0 – South Africa 106 points, Bangladesh 78 points
      • Bangladesh beat South Africa 1-0 – Bangladesh 83 points, South Africa 103 points
      • Bangladesh beat South Africa 2-0 – Bangladesh 85 points, South Africa 102 points
In the individual rankings, South Africa have batsmen Hashim Amla (eighth), Quinton de Kock (12th), Dean Elgar (16th) and captain Faf du Plessis (joint-18th) in the top 20 while pace bowlers Kagiso Rabada (sixth), Morne Morkel (14th) and Keshav Maharaj (23rd) are the top bowlers.

Left-handed opener Tamim Iqbal is the leading Bangladesh batsman at 15th position while captain Mushfiqur Rahim is ranked 23rd. In the absence of world’s top all-rounder Shakib Al Hassan, who has taken a sabbatical from Test cricket, off-spinner Mehedi Hasan is the leading bowler in 29th position with Taijul Islam in 32nd place.

South Africa batsmen Hashim Amla and Dean Elgar have moved up the MRF Tyres ICC Test Player Rankings after notching fine centuries in the first Test against Bangladesh in Potchefstroom, which their team won by 333 runs to take a 1-0 lead in the two-match series.

Amla’s scores of 137 and 28 have helped him move up one place to seventh position in the latest rankings while left-handed opener Elgar’s innings of 199 and 18 have lifted him four places to 12th position in the latest rankings. Amla has held the top rank in the past while Elgar’s best has been 11th position in March this year.

Amla and Elgar are not the only South Africa batsmen to gain in the latest rankings, which also take into account the first Test between Pakistan and Sri Lanka in Abu Dhabi, which Sri Lanka won by 21 runs on Monday to take a 1-0 lead in the two-match series.

Captain Faf du Plessis has gained two places to reach 16th position while Temba Bavuma has moved up three places to reach a career-best 36th position.

Among their bowlers, pace bowler Kagiso Rabada has moved up one place to fifth position while left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj’s seven wickets in the match have seen him gain five places to reach a career-best 18th position. This is the second-best position by a South Africa spinner after Paul Harris (sixth in December 2009) since their return to Test cricket.

For Bangladesh, Mominul Haque has gained one slot to reach 37th rank among batsmen while Mahmudullah has moved up two places to take 52nd position.

Kagiso Rabada has moved up one place to fifth position while left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj has reached a career-best 18th position.
Sri Lanka players have also made significant gains with captain Dinesh Chandimal gaining 13 slots to reach 20th position after scores of 155 not out and seven, opener Dimuth Karunaratne moving up five places to 26th place and Niroshan Dickwella moving up 20 places to take a career-best 41st position.

Dilruwan Perera (up one place to 26th), Nuwan Pradeep (up one place to 33rd) and Suranga Lakmal (up two places to 36th) are the ones to move northwards among their bowlers while Rangana Herath’s fine effort in the match has helped him gain ranking points but did not result in him moving up the table.

Herath, who achieved the milestone of 400 Test wickets with his 11-wicket match haul in Abu Dhabi, has gained 37 points to reach within six points of third-placed Ravichandran Ashwin of India.

Similarly, Pakistan leg-spinner Yasir Shah’s eight wickets in the Abu Dhabi Test have helped him only retain 15th place but his 715 rating points are the highest since December 2016. His compatriot Mohamad Abbas has gained three slots to reach 42nd position.

Among their batsmen, debutant Haris Sohail has entered the rankings at a creditable 71st position with scores of 76 and 34 while opener Shan Masood has gained six places to reach 105th position.

Pakistan drop to seventh in latest ICC Test rankings

Thirteen months after lifting the prestigious ICC Test Championship mace for topping the MRF Tyres ICC Test Team Rankings, Pakistan have plummeted to seventh in the latest Test team rankings, which were updated following the conclusion of its home series against Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka not only won the series 2-0 but handed Pakistan only its second whitewash in a home series (Pakistan lost all three Tests against Australia in 2002-03).

The result meant Sri Lanka has lifted from 90 points to 94 points, while Pakistan has dropped from 93 points to 88 points.

Sri Lanka now trails fifth-ranked Australia (97 points) by three points, while Pakistan is ahead of eighth-ranked Windies (75 points) by 13 points.

Sri Lanka’s next Test assignment is against number-one ranked India (125 points), when the two sides will go head to head in a three-Test series starting in Kolkata on 16 November. Pakistan’s next red-ball match is against Ireland in April, which will be followed by two away Tests in England.

Meanwhile, South Africa has gained one point while Bangladesh has conceded two points following the conclusion of their series, which Faf du Plessis’s side won by 2-0. South Africa is now second on 111 points (six points ahead of third-ranked England) while Bangladesh is ninth on 72 points (three points behind Windies).
