De Villiers, Hasan Ali move up to top of ODI rankings

Babar, Mushfiqur, Lakmal and Phehlukwayo among others to gain in latest rankings.
South Africa batsman AB de Villiers has once again grabbed the top position in the MRF Tyres ICC ODI Player Rankings while Pakistan’s Hasan Ali has emerged as a new number one among bowlers in the latest ranking updates carried out on Friday.

    hassan-ali-lahiru-gamage_3587bcd8-b5a0-11e7-8b25-96a837358dfc copy.jpg

An astonishing knock of 176 by de Villiers in the second ODI against Bangladesh in Paarl, which consisted of 15 fours and seven sixes and came off only 104 balls, has also helped South Africa edge India at the top of the MRF Tyres ICC ODI Team Rankings by taking a 2-0 winning lead in the three-match series.

The latest rankings, which take into account the first two matches of the South Africa-Bangladesh series and the first three matches of the ongoing Pakistan-Sri Lanka series in the United Arab Emirates, sees de Villiers climb to the top of the ODI table for the 14th time in his career.

De Villiers, who has leapfrogged Australian David Warner and India captain Virat Kohli, had first attained top position on 30 May 2010 and the number of days he has spent at the top is second most after retired Windies great Vivian Richards. De Villiers has now been at the top for 2,124 days while Richards was number one for 2,306 days.

Other batsmen to move up include Pakistan’s Babar Azam (up two places to a career-best fourth position), the South African pair of Quinton de Kock (up three places to fifth) and Hashim Amla (up two places to ninth), and Bangladesh’s Mushfiqur Rahim (up five places to 18th).

Among bowlers, Hasan Ali’s haul of five for 34 in the third ODI against Sri Lanka in Abu Dhabi, which his team won by seven wickets for a decisive 3-0 lead in the five-match series, has given the pace bowler a big boost in ranking points.

The 23-year-old, who has taken nine wickets in the series so far, has moved up six places to become the fifth bowler at the top of the ODI rankings this year after Trent Boult, Imran Tahir, Kagiso Rabada and Josh Hazlewood.

Outside of the top 20, Sri Lanka’s Suranga Lakmal (up three places to 36th), South Africa’s Andile Phehlukwayo (up 30 places to 52nd) and Bangladesh’s Rubel Hossain (up seven places to 61st) are the other bowlers to move northwards.

Pakistan’s Mohammad Hafeez is back as the top all-rounder, edging Bangladesh’s Shakib Al Hasan. Hafeez, who first attained top ranking in January 2013, has reached the top spot for the ninth time.

Meanwhile, India will be looking to wrest back the top spot in the team rankings when they take on New Zealand in an upcoming three-match series.

South Africa and India are both on 120 points with South Africa ahead on decimal points. South Africa can reach 121 points if they complete a 3-0 series win over Bangladesh but India will overtake them if they win the opening match against New Zealand, to be played the same day as the last South Africa-Bangladesh match, on 22 October.

Azhar Ali slips to 10th slot after Sri Lanka series

DUBAI (Web Desk) – Pakistan’s Azhar Ali has slipped down two places in ICC Test rankings for batsmen, and gone to number ten after the Sri Lanka series.

Pakistan middle-order batsman Asad Shafiq, who scored his 11th Test century, has gained seven places to reach 28th position while captain Sarfraz Ahmed has gained one place to reach 32nd position.

Pace bowler Wahab Riaz’s five wickets in the match have seen him overtake India’s Umesh Yadav to take 24th position while Haris Sohail has gained 35 places to reach 83rd rank.

Pakistan will be hoping to consolidate their sixth position on the table. They presently have 95 points, nine more than their opposition, and can go up to 99 points with a 5-0 win. On the other hand, Sri Lanka have a tough task if they hope to overtake Pakistan like they did in the Test rankings during a preceding series. Sri Lanka, who were the last side to ensure a direct qualification berth for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019, will have to defeat Pakistan 5-0 to move ahead of them.

ICC T20I Rankings: Team India remains fifth, Australia climb up to sixth spot after 1-1 series draw

New Delhi: 'Mission 111' – as they called it as Team India were on a bid to close in on the No. 1 title in T20Is. But a crumbling defeat in the second T20I match against Australia and then a washed-out third game put a temporary halt to their ride to the top spot. So, the Men in Blue hold onto their No. 5 rank while Australia climb up to sixth spot after 1-1 series draw as per the latest ICC T20I Rankings.

After a splendid run in the ODI series against West Indies, Sri Lanka and then Australia, Virat Kohli-led Indian team grab top honour in the ICC ODI Team Rankings. The Men in Blue had already become the World No. 1 in Test cricket, and still are. And then, with the start of the three-match T20I series, Team India embarked on a journey to be the No.1 in the shortest format of the game too.

A 3-0 whitewash of the Aussies would result in India climbing up to grab the second spot. They won the first match in Ranchi, but lost the second while the third one ended in a wash-out. Ergo, India who started at No. 5 ahead of the series, remained at the same spot with 116 ratings. While the Aussies jumped a spot to the sixth place five-ratings mark behind the Indians.

Can they still be No. 1 in the T20I rankings chart?

Yes, they can. But it is a tough road ahead with three competitors vying for the top honour – present incumbent New Zealand, old nemesis Pakistan along with India.

Pakistan have a three-match T20I series lined up against Sri Lanka, while India have a similar schedule against New Zealand. The Kiwis stand atop with 125 ratings followed by Pakistan with 121 and India are at No.5 with 116 ratings.

If Pakistan can pull off a stunning 3-0 whitewash over Sri Lanka while New Zealand finish the series 1-2 in favour of the Indians, then Pakistan finish atop followed by New Zealand and India remain at No.5.

If Sri Lanka can pull one back to finish the series 1-2 in favour of the Pakistanis while the similar result stands in favour of the Indians then New Zealand remain No.1 followed West Indies and then Pakistan. India will still remain at the fifth spot.

Only if India can whitewash the Kiwis in the three-match series will they be able to jump four places to grab the No.1 spot on the ICC T201 Team Rankings. But with the condition that Pakistan will have to lose at least one match. If Pakistan finishes off with 3-0 score then India have top wait for the Sri Lanka series to complete their 'Mission 111'.

India-New Zealand T20I series will start off on November 1. Prior to that, the two teams will also face-off in a three-match ODI series starting October 22.

Hasan Ali rockets to the top of ICC ODI bowlers rankings

Pakistan’s Hasan Ali has surged to number one in the latest ICC ODI bowlers rankings released on Friday.

The pacer’s career-best haul of five for 34 in the third ODI against Sri Lanka in Abu Dhabi, which Pakistan won by seven wickets for a decisive 3-0 lead in the five-match series, boosted him to the top of the table.

The 23-year-old, who has taken nine wickets in the series so far, climbed six places to become the new number one – the fifth bowler to top the ODI rankings this year after Trent Boult, Imran Tahir, Kagiso Rabada and Josh Hazlewood.

Babar Azam has moved up two places to a career-best fourth position in the ODI batsmen rankings.

Mohammad Hafeez is back as the top all-rounder, edging Bangladesh’s Shakib Al Hasan. Hafeez, who first attained top ranking in January 2013, has reached the top spot for the ninth time.

South Africa’s star batsman AB de Villiers has once again grabbed the top position in the ODI batsmen rankings, buoyed by a rapid knock of 176 in the second ODI against Bangladesh, which consisted of 15 fours and seven sixes and came off only 104 balls.

His inning also helped South Africa surpass India at the top of the ODI team rankings by taking a 2-0 winning lead in the three-match series.

Pakistan on verge of becoming number one

Pakistan cricket team is just steps away to become the number one T20 team in the world.

The Pakistan team is currently ranked No. 2 in the ICC T20I rankings, if they manage to win all three matches the green shirts will come within a point of top-ranked New Zealand.

Pakistan have won nine of their 11 T20Is, under the leadership of Sarfraz Ahmed.

“It was highly satisfying to win 5-0 because all the players have done well in all three departments,” said Sarfraz during presser on Wednesday. “The best thing is that youngsters have done well and made an impact whenever they got a chance.”

Meanwhile, Pakistan would have the services of Mohammad Amir, who will be returning to the squad after sustaining injury in the Test series, adding impetus to the potent bowling attack.

“Yes, Amir will be back and that adds to our weapons in bowling,” said Sarfraz, who will miss T20 specialist Rumman Raees who was ruled out with an elbow injury.

In the latest rankings update that takes into account India’s home series against New Zealand which India won 2-1 on Sunday, as well as the last match of the South Africa-Bangladesh series and the last two matches of the Pakistan-Sri Lanka series, Kohli has also reached a career-high in terms of rating points.

The 28-year-old Delhi batsman, who scored 263 runs in the series against New Zealand including knocks of 121 in the first ODI in Mumbai and 113 in the final ODI in Kanpur, has reached 889 points, which is the best ever by an India batsman. The previous highest points tally of 887 was managed by Sachin Tendulkar in 1998 and by Kohli earlier this year.

India opener Rohit Sharma’s 174 runs in the series against New Zealand, which included a fine 147 in the final match, has seen him reach a career-high rating of 799 points, even though he remains in seventh position. Similarly, Pakistan’s Babar Azam (fourth position) and South Africa’s Quinton de Kock (fifth position) have also attained their highest in terms of rating points.

South Africa batsman Faf du Plessis (up two places to 8th), former India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni (up one place to 11th), New Zealand batsman Tom Latham (up 15 places to a career-best 23rd), Pakistan captain Sarfraz Ahmed (up three places to 37th) and Sri Lanka’s Lahiru Thirimanne (up six places to 47th) are among the batsmen to move up in the rankings.

The list for bowlers continues to be led by Pakistan pace bowler Hasan Ali while India pace bowler Jasprit Bumrah has reached a career-best third position after finishing with six wickets in the series against New Zealand.

Wow India are out of sight in the current rankings. 37 points ahead! that's almost 1.5 times as many points.
This Pakistan team has had a horrible few years and it's showing in the rankings. Need to find some inspiration for this side soon as it seems they are in free fall at the moment.

Pakistan top order batsman Azhar Ali has continued to climb the Test ladder after the senior batsman jumped up one place at the latest MRF Tyres ICC Rankings for Test batsmen.

Azhar is placed at number eighth spot on the list, with no Pakistani in the top 20. The former Pakistani captain topples India’s Lokesh Rahul to ninth spot to attain the slot.

Meanwhile, Australia captain Steve Smith consolidated his position as the top Test batsman, after stroking a magnificent unbeaten 141, his 21st century in his 57th Test, proving the foundation for Australia’s 10-wicket victory over England in Brisbane at Ashes series.

With 941 points, Smith is now the joint-fifth in terms of the highest points tally in batting history in Tests behind Sir Don Bradman (961), Len Hutton (945), Jack Hobbs (942) and Ricky Ponting (942), and at par with Peter May (941), reported ICC.

In the bowling department, Indian off spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who became the fastest man to claim 300 wickets in Tests, has consolidated his fourth position, after gaining nine points which have put him on 849 points.

Meanwhile, England’s bowling great James Anderson remain the number-one ranked, but dropped five points after claiming two wickets in the Brisbane Test.

Prolific Kohli grabs second position in Test rankings

Marsh, Stoneman, de Grandhomme, Blundell and Brathwaite others to move up.
India captain Virat Kohli has moved up three places to grab second position among batsmen in the MRF Tyres ICC Test Player Rankings, after registering his career-best score in the third and final Test against Sri Lanka, which ended in a draw in New Delhi on Wednesday.

Kohli’s first-innings knock of 243 was followed with 50 as he finished with 610 runs in the series, which India won 1-0. Kohli, who slammed back-to-back double-centuries and recorded three-figure scores in three consecutive matches, started the series in sixth position but has leapfrogged David Warner, Cheteshwar Pujara, Kane Williamson and Joe Root after the stupendous run which saw him average 152.50.

Though 45 points separate him from Australia captain Steve Smith, Kohli would be eyeing the chance of reaching the zenith in all three formats since he is the current No. 1 in ODIs and T20Is. Smith though has been in a different league and last week reached 941 points, the joint fifth-highest in terms of the highest points tally in batting history in Tests. Smith is now on 938 points while Kohli is on 893 points.

Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting is the only batsman to have been at the top in all three formats at the same time – in December-January 2005-06, while his compatriot Matthew Hayden is the other batsman to have topped all three formats.

Though Smith enjoys a substantial lead over Kohli, the competition for second to fifth positions remains intense. Before this Test, only 11 points separated second-ranked Pujara from fifth-ranked Kohli. Following the latest performances, the gap has increased slightly with 28 points now separating second-ranked Kohli from fifth-ranked Williamson.

In the latest rankings, which also take into account the second Test between Australia and England in Adelaide which the home side won by 120 runs, and the first Test in Wellington in which New Zealand defeated the Windies by an innings and 67 runs, opener Murali Vijay (up three places to 25th) and middle-order batsman Rohit Sharma (up six places to 40th) are the other India batsmen to move up.

For Sri Lanka, captain Dinesh Chandimal has gained eight places to take ninth position after finishing the series with 366 runs, the first time he has moved into the top 10. All-rounder Angelo Mathews has moved up seven places to 23rd position after scoring 111 in the first innings while Dhananjaya de Silva’s match-saving 119 in the second innings has lifted him nine places to 47th position.

For Australia, left-hander Shaun Marsh’s unbeaten 126 in the first Test in Adelaide has lifted him six places to a career-best 27th position while pace bowlers Mitchell Starc (up two places to eighth) and Pat Cummins (up two places to 43rd) are the others to move up.

England captain Joe Root has retained his third spot after scores of nine and 67 in Adelaide and Mark Stoneman has gained 18 slots to take 83rd position. Chris Woakes has moved up five places among bowlers to reach 28th position after finishing with five wickets in the match.

For New Zealand, Tom Blundell has entered the rankings in 70th position. The 27-year-old, who featured in the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup in 2010 in New Zealand, became the first wicketkeeper from his country to score a century on Test debut. His team-mate Colin de Grandhomme, who had played in the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup in 2004 for Zimbabwe but later moved to New Zealand, has gained 35 places to reach 75th position after also notching a ton.

For the Windies, opener Kraigg Brathwaite has gained two slots to reach 17th position while Kemar Roach (up three places to 20th) and Miguel Cummins (up four places to 77th) are among the main gainers.

In the MRF Tyres ICC Test Team Rankings, India has lost one point but remains well ahead of South Africa at the top of the rankings, while Sri Lanka remains on its pre-series tally of 94 points in sixth place.

Taylor moves into top 10 in Test rankings

New Zealand batsman Ross Taylor has moved into the top 10 of the MRF Tyres ICC Test Player Rankings, after a fine performance in the second and final Test against the Windies in Hamilton which his side won by 240 runs on Tuesday to complete a 2-0 series win.

Taylor, who enjoyed a career-high third position in December 2013 when he tallied 871 points, 132 more than his current total of 739, scored 16 and 107 not out to move up three places and take 10th position in a list led by Australia captain Steve Smith.

The 33-year-old Taylor’s 17th Test century has helped him re-enter the top 10 after last being there in August 2016. He is now the second-best placed New Zealand batsman with captain Kane Williamson occupying fifth position.

New Zealand opener Jeet Raval and all-rounder Colin de Grandhomme have also made significant gains. Raval has gained four slots to reach 30th position after scores of 84 and four in Hamilton, while de Grandhomme has gained five places to reach a career-best 70th position with scores of 58 and 22.

Mitchell Santner (up one place to a career-best 51st) has moved up among bowlers for New Zealand, while pace bowlers Shannon Gabriel (up two places to 21st) and Miguel Cummins (up 14 places to 63rd) have gained for the visiting side.

Among the Windies batsmen, Roston Chase has gained seven slots to reach 38th position while Shane Dowrich has gained six places to reach 83rd position.

Meanwhile, there has been no change of positions in the MRF Tyres ICC Test Team Rankings. New Zealand have gained three points to reach 100 points but remain in fourth position. The Windies have lost three points but are still in eighth position, ahead of Bangladesh on decimal points.

Hasan, Hafeez remain on top of the table

Pakistan fast bowler Hasan Ali and all- rounder Mohammad Hafeez have maintained their grip on the top slots, in the latest MRF Tyres ICC ODI Player Rankings on Monday.

With 759 points in the kitty, Hasan Ali remain the top ODI bowler, wherever, Hafeez is the best ODI all-rounder despite suffering another bowling ban by the International Cricket Council (ICC).

India opener Rohit Sharma has moved up to grab fifth position among batsmen in the rankings after the three-match series against Sri Lanka, which India wrapped up 2-1 on Sunday.

India however, lost a chance to become the number one ODI side, if they have a 3-0 win against the Lankans but that was ruled out early as they lost the opening match on a seaming track in Dharamsala.

Meanwhile, Indian skipper Virat Kohli remains the number one ranked ODI batsman, with 876 points. Pakistan’s Babar Azam was the only batsman in the top ten, with his position intact at the fourth spot.

Smith closes in on Bradman, reaches joint-second highest batting points ever

Steve Smith, the top-ranked Test batsman, continued his phenomenal run to rise to new heights in the MRF Tyres ICC Test Player Rankings, moving closer towards Don Bradman’s highest-ever ranking points, after a match-winning double-century in the third Test against England in Perth.

The Australian captain’s knock of 239, which helped his team regain the Ashes by taking an unassailable 3-0 lead in the five-match series, has seen him reach a tally of 945 points to take joint-second position in the all-time list, along with Len Hutton. Smith had reached 941 points after the first Test in Adelaide before dropping briefly to 938 after the Brisbane Test.

Smith, who has gained seven points after his performance in Perth to overtake Peter May, Ricky Ponting and Jack Hobbs. He is now within 16 points of Bradman’s tally of 961 points, and has had a minimum of 918 points over the past 12 months, which is 25 more than what second-placed Virat Kohli has as of now. His batting average of 62.32 is second only to Bradman in terms of batsmen with at least 20 Test innings and by the time the fourth Test of the series starts on Boxing Day, he would have been the number one for two years.

Smith is already ahead of Bradman with regard to the number of Tests at the top. He has now been number one for 114 Tests, which is the fifth-most in a list led by Gary Sobers (189 Tests) and with Viv Richards (179), Lara (140) and Tendulkar (139) the only ones ahead of him in this list.

Batsmen to reach career-best rankings after the Perth Test include Dawid Malan of England (up 47 places to a career-best 52nd) after his innings of 140 and 54 in Perth and Mitchell Marsh of Australia (up 44 places to 65th) after his score of 181. Jonny Bairstow (up one place to 15th) and Usman Khawaja (up two places to 19th) are the other batsmen to have moved up.

In the bowlers’ list led by England’s new-ball bowler James Anderson, Australia pace bowler Josh Hazlewood has gained one slot to move into the top five after finishing with eight wickets in the match. Pat Cummins of Australia (up four places to a career-best 39th) and Craig Overton of England (up seven places to 89th) have also gained in the latest rankings.

Finch, Imad back at the top in latest T20I rankings

Rahul, Sharma, Chahal and Kusal Perera among those to gain in latest update.
Australia opener Aaron Finch and Pakistan left-arm spinner Imad Wasim are the top-ranked batsman and bowler, respectively, in the latest MRF Tyres ICC T20I Player Rankings which were updated after the series between India and Sri Lanka that the home side won 3-0 in Mumbai on Sunday.

Finch moved up one place as did Windies left-handed opener Evin Lewis, even as Virat Kohli slipped to third position after missing the series due to personal commitments. As players lose two per cent of their rating points for each T20I missed, Kohli, has slipped from 824 points to 776 points.

However, Kohli, who is top-ranked in ODIs and second in Tests, is only eight points behind Finch and four behind Lewis.

Similarly, Imad has moved up to become the top-ranked bowler as Jasprit Bumrah missed the final match of the series after finishing wicket-less in the opening two games to slip to third place. Afghanistan leg-spinner Rashid Khan has moved up one place to take a career-best second position.

Both Finch and Imad have been top-ranked in the past. Finch has spent 121 matches and 368 days as number one while Imad has spent 15 matches and 132 days at the top. Finch was last at the top on 18 March 2016 while Imad was at number one position last on 4 November this year.

In other changes, India’s Lokesh Rahul and Rohit Sharma have made substantial gains. Rahul has gained 23 slots to reach fourth position after scoring 154 runs in the series including two half-centuries. Sharma’s 162 runs in the series, which included a knock of 118 in the second match in Indore, have helped him gain six slots to reach 14th position.

Among bowlers, leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal’s eight wickets in the series have helped him move up 14 slots to reach 16th position while Hardik Pandya (up 40 places to joint-39th) and Kuleep Yadav (up 48 places to 64) have also moved northwards after taking six wickets each.

For Sri Lanka, Kusal Perera has moved up eight places to take the 30th slot in the batsmen’s list after aggregating 100 runs in the series while Upul Tharanga has gained 36 slots to reach 105th position after his total of 81 runs. Thisara Perera has gained two places to reach 70th position among bowlers.

In the MRF Tyres ICC T20I Team Rankings, India have moved up from their pre-series tally of 119 points to 121 points. They have leapfrogged England, New Zealand and the Windies to move from fifth to second position in a list led by Pakistan with 124 points.

Boult moves to fourth position in ODI rankings

Taylor, Lewis and Holder among the others to gain in latest update.
New Zealand pace bowler Trent Boult has gained three places to reach fourth position in the MRF Tyres ICC ODI Player Rankings after his team completed a 3-0 series victory over the Windies in Christchurch on Tuesday.

The left-arm pace bowler has leapfrogged the Australia pair of Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood as well as South Africa’s Kagiso Rabada after finishing with 10 wickets in the series, which included a career-best haul of seven for 34 in the second match in Christchurch.

Boult had finished last year as the top-ranked bowler in ODIs, a place held by Pakistan pace bowler Hasan Ali in what is the last ODI ranking update for the year. India captain Virat Kohli, who slipped in the T20I rankings for batsmen after missing the three-match home series against Sri Lanka, remains on top in ODIs.

Boult’s team-mate Mitchell Santner has also moved into the top 10 after finishing with three for 15 in his only appearance in the series. The left-arm spinner has gained four slots to reach 10th position after his fine performance in the final match, which was reduced to 23 overs per side and which the home side won by 66 runs.

Doug Bracewell (up 15 places to 77th) has also moved up the bowling rankings for the home side while Ross Taylor (up four places to 11th) and Henry Nicholls (up 30 places to 90th) were the other main gainers among batsmen.

For the Windies, left-handed opener Evin Lewis has moved up 11 places to take 65th position after finishing with 86 runs from two matches while Rovman Powell has advanced 11 slots to take 127th position among batsmen. Among bowlers, captain Jason Holder has moved up six places to take 21st position after finishing with five wickets in the series.

There has been no change of positions in the MRF Tyres ICC ODI Team Rankings as New Zealand have gained one point to reach 112 points and remain in fifth position in a table led by South Africa while the Windies have lost one point and are still in ninth place.

The year would not have ended as desired for the Windies, who after failing to secure a direct qualifying berth for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019, are due to play in the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier 2018 in Zimbabwe in March.

Afghanistan, Hong Kong, Ireland, Netherlands, Papua New Guinea, Scotland and host Zimbabwe are the other teams confirmed for the 10-team Qualifier with the lineup due to be completed in Namibia in February 2018 when the finalists of the ICC World Cricket League Division 2 will book their berths.

Two teams from the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier 2018 will join Australia, Bangladesh, England, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa and Sri Lanka in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 to be staged in the United Kingdom.

New Zealand regains No.1 T20I rankings

New Zealand have returned to the top of the MRF Tyres ICC T20I Team Rankings after winning the three-match series against the Windies by 2-0.

New Zealand had entered the series against the Windies in third place behind Pakistan (124 points) and India (121 points) on 120 points.

New Zealand moved ahead of India after winning the first T20I by 47 runs and then leapfrogged Pakistan into the number-one position after clinching the third T20I by 119 runs. The second T20I was rained-off.

New Zealand are now on 126 points, while the Windies have dropped from 120 points to 115 points in fifth position.

New Zealand had last held the number-one position in October 2017, before they slipped to third following their series loss to India in November.

New Zealand will now put their number-one ranking on the line when they will take on Pakistan in the three-match series to be played on 22, 25 and 28 January. To retain the top spot, the

Blackcaps will have to beat Pakistan by 2-1 or better. Their failure to win the series will mean Pakistan will be back at the top of the table.

Munro and Sodhi top T20I rankings

New Zealand's Colin Munro and Ish Sodhi have vaulted to the top of ICC T20I rankings for batsmen and bowlers respectively, while the team regained its No. 1 position as well following the recent 2-0 drubbing of West Indies.

Munro, who finished as the top-scorer in the series with 223 runs - which gave him 137 points - jumped 11 places to top the rankings for the first time in his career. "It's a bit of a surprise but one that I think anybody would take," he said. "It's been a bit of a goal of mine to get up the rankings and to get to the top is pretty special."

Munro's assault included back-to-back half-centuries and a 53-ball 104, which made him the first batsman to hit three hundreds in T20 internationals. He leapfrogged team-mates Kane Williamson, who has slipped two places to seventh, and Martin Guptill, who moved to the 11th place, and become the third New Zealand batsman to occupy the No. 1 position after Guptil and Brendon McCullum.

Sodhi, who also achieved the milestone of topping the rankings for the first time, moved from 10th to first after he took three wickets at 18. The 25-year old wristspinner earned 70 points for his efforts in the series, has 729 in all, and is seven points ahead of Pakistan's Imad Wasim. Sodhi is also the third New Zealand bowler after Daniel Vettori and Shane Bond to rise to the top.

"I'm really grateful for the success I've had and I'm stoked to be ranked number-one," Sodhi said. "It hasn't really sunk in just yet, but I'm sure it will as the days progress. I've been trying to find a really good balance between attacking and defending, and I think it's getting better and better the more I play."

"I played club cricket with Colin when I was about 15-years-old and he handed me my first premier cricket cap. So, I'm stoked to see him doing what he is doing at the highest level."

Munro and Sodhi are also the second New Zealand pair to simultaneously top the T20I batting and bowling tables after McCullum and Vettori between 2009 and 2010. Other New Zealand players to have improved their rankings following the series were Mitchell Santner who rose to sixth position among the bowlers, while Trent Boult has claimed the 13th spot.

Azhar Ali has jumped two spots in latest MRF Tyres ICC Test rankings on Tuesday.

Azhar Ali has jumped 2 spots and is now ranked as the 7th best batsman in the world.

Meanwhile, Australian captain Steven Smith is still holding the top spot in batsman’s ranking followed by Joe Root and Virat Kohli, who occupy the second and third spot respectively.

In the bowlers ranking, South African Kagiso Rabada has moved up to the top of the rankings thanks to his performance in first Test against India.

England’s James Anderson slipped one place to 2nd while Ravindra Jadeja holds third spot.

Pakistan’s Yasir Shah is now down at 14th.

Pakistan back on top of T20I team rankings

Pakistan have returned to the top of the MRF Tyres ICC T20I Team Rankings for the third time in as many months after winning their three-match series against New Zealand at the Bay Oval in Tauranga on Sunday.

Pakistan (124 points) had entered the series trailing number-one ranked New Zealand (126 points) by two points. However, a 2-1 series win means Pakistan have jumped to 126 points, while New Zealand have slipped to 123 points.

India are third on 121 points, followed by England (119) and ICC World Twenty20 champions the West Indies (115).

Pakistan had first surged to the top during the India v New Zealand series in October 2017. After India won the opener, Pakistan had moved to number-one position, but New Zealand reclaimed the spot when they won the second match to level the series. India’s 2-1 series win meant Pakistan regained the top spot.

However, New Zealand beat the Windies 2-0 earlier in the month to move to the number-one ranking once again. Kane Williamson’s side will have another crack at the number-one ranking when they will feature in next month’s T20I tri-series, also involving Australia and England.

Babar and Santner top T20I player rankings

Pakistan batsman Babar Azam and New Zealand bowler Mitchell Santner have topped the MRF Tyres ICC Player Rankings for T20I Batsmen and Bowlers respectively, following the conclusion of their series which the 2009 ICC World Twenty20 champions won 2-1.

Babar was rewarded for finishing as the leading run-scorer in the series (109 runs) with a rise of 11 places that has put him on top for the first time. He now leads Australia’s Aaron Finch (784 points) by two points.

Babar is the second Pakistan batsman to top the T20I rankings after Misbah-ul-Haq, who had climbed to number-one spot in 2009.

New Zealand’s Colin Munro, who had started the series in number-one position, has slipped to fourth after scoring 50 runs in the two matches he played.

Pakistan’s Ahmed Shehzad has moved up two places to 25th and is his side’s second highest-ranked batsman in the shortest format, but captain Sarfraz Ahmed and Fakhar Zaman are the biggest movers in the latest rankings.

Sarfraz’s series contribution of 79 runs has lifted him from 76th position to 55th, while Fakhar has claimed the 71st spot after rising 41 places following his series aggregate of 99 runs.

In the bowlers’ table, Santner has replaced team-mate Ish Sodhi as the top-ranked bowler. The left-arm spinner picked up four wickets and now leads Afghanistan’s number-two ranked spinner Rashid Khan by one point.

Sodhi has dropped two places to third, six points behind Santner, after managing two wickets in the series.

Santner is the fourth New Zealand bowler after Daniel Vettori, Shane Bond and Sodhi to claim the coveted number-one position.

Pakistan’s Shadab Khan, who was the most successful bowler in the series with five wickets, has rocketed 28 places to 14th spot, while fast bowler Mohammad Amir has also made an impressive gain of 19 places and now sits in 27th position after bagging three wickets.

Other significant movers include Tim Southee (53rd, up by 17 places), Rumman Raees (92nd, up by 33 places) and Faheem Ashraf (102nd, up by 31 places).

There is no change in the all-rounders’ list, which is still headed by Shakib Al Hasan of Bangladesh, with Glenn Maxwell of Australia in second spot.

India rise to No. 1 in ODI rankings

After winning their first bilateral series in South Africa, India have climbed to the top of the ODI rankings for the third time in six months. India overtook South Africa - who will finish the ongoing series ranked second - after beating them by 73 runs in the fourth ODI in Port Elizabeth. India are also the top-ranked Test team.

India had become the No. 1 ODI side after taking a 2-0 lead in the series, but had to win four of six matches to retain that ranking after the series. If India win the final ODI, they will finish with 123 rankings points, and South Africa with 117. South Africa had to either tie or win the ODI series against India to stay at the top of the rankings.

India's series win means England could move past South Africa, to No. 2, if they beat New Zealand 5-0 in the upcoming ODI series. Afghanistan, meanwhile, have also climbed past Zimbabwe to No. 10 on the ODI rankings after winning the third ODI in Sharjah on Tuesday, but will have to win the series to retain that position.

Kohli attains rare double in ICC Rankings

Virat Kohli becomes the second batsman to cross 900-point mark in both Tests and ODIs; Rashid shares top spot with Bumrah amongst bowlers.
⦁ India captain becomes only the second batsman to cross the 900-point mark concurrently in Tests and ODIs
⦁ Rashid Khan and Jasprit Bumrah take joint-top position among bowlers; Rashid also moves into top-five among all-rounders

Virat Kohli’s prolific run with the bat has helped him attain the rare feat of crossing the 900-point mark in both Tests and ODIs after the latest update in the MRF Tyres ICC ODI Player Rankings, which also saw Afghanistan leg-spinner Rashid Khan and India pace bowler Jasprit Bumrah take the joint-top position among bowlers.

Kohli has become only the second batsman after South Africa’s AB de Villiers to attain the 900-point mark concurrently in both forms of the game and one among only five to have crossed 900 points in both forms of the game as he consolidated his top position with 558 runs in the 5-1 series win over South Africa, during which he slammed three centuries.

Kohli has thus moved ahead of Brian Lara in the all-timers’ list, having also overtaken him in the all-timers’ Test list last month. Kohli is now seventh in the ODI list of all-time rankings that is led by Vivian Richards with 935 points and the India captain is now a good 22 points clear of Sachin Tendulkar, whose ODI career high of 887 points came against Zimbabwe in January 1998. Kohli’s aggregate is the best since Brian Lara reached 908 points in March 1993.

India opener Shikhar Dhawan, who aggregated 323 runs in the South Africa series, is another notable gainer in the latest rankings even as a clutch of Indian bowlers made rapid strides in the latest rankings, including the wrist-spin duo of Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav.

Leg-spinner Chahal has moved up 21 slots to eighth position with 16 wickets in the South Africa series while Chinaman bowler Yadav’s 17 scalps have helped him move up 47 places to take the 15th position. Pace bowler Jasprit Bumrah’s eight wickets have lifted him two places to take the joint-first position.

Rashid has joined Bumrah at the top with 16 wickets in the series against Zimbabwe which Afghanistan won 4-1 to become the youngest to attain top ranking. His 51 runs in two innings in the series, including a brisk 43 in the final match in Sharjah on Monday, has also helped him break into the top-five in the list of all-rounders while he has also moved up 11 slots to take 114th place among batsmen.

Other Afghanistan players to gain in the latest rankings include batsmen Rahmat Shah (up 39 places to 42nd), Javed Ahmadi (up 18 places to 83rd) and Najibullah Zadran (up 23 places to 93rd) and off-spin bowler Mohammad Nabi (up seven places to 11th).

For South Africa, Faf du Plessis’ 120-run knock in the first ODI against India, after which he was ruled out due to an injury, has seen him gain one slot to reach eight position.
Meanwhile, Afghanistan have overtaken Zimbabwe in the MRF Tyres ICC ODI Team Rankings. Afghanistan have gained four points to take the 10th position with 55 points while Zimbabwe have lost three points to be on 50 points.

      New Zealand v England series

Meanwhile, England and New Zealand feature in a five-match ODI series starting on 25 February at Hamilton, with the home side having the chance to overtake the opposition by winning the series 3-2. A 3-2 series win will help New Zealand overtake England on decimal points while both teams can reach the second position with a 5-0 win.

      Series scenarios:

⦁ New Zealand beats England 5-0: New Zealand 119 points; England 113 points

⦁ New Zealand beats England 4-1: New Zealand 117 points; England 114 points

⦁ New Zealand beats England 3-2: New Zealand 116 points (ahead on decimals); England 116

⦁ England beats New Zealand 3-2: England 117 points; New Zealand 114 points

⦁ England beats New Zealand 4-1: England 119 points; New Zealand 113 points

⦁ England beats New Zealand 5-0; England 120 points; New Zealand 111 points
