PSL franchises asked to clear their dues by December 3

PSL franchises have been asked by the PCB to clear all outstanding dues by next week, despite ongoing negotiations between them to re-look at the financial model underpinning the league.

The PCB's chief finance officer Badar Manzoor Khan has asked in an email seen by ESPNcricinfo that all the teams pay up by December 3, failing which the board reserves the right to encash the franchises' bank guarantees.

The move has angered franchises who, in their recent meeting with the PCB in Islamabad, had formed a three-member committee to revisit the revenue-share model on which the PSL was founded, including an effort to gain tax breaks from the government. The email asking for payment has come even as the committee works towards a resolution.

One of the primary bones of contention is the franchise fee they pay every year, mainly because those payments are required to be made in US dollars. The value of the rupee, fairly stable against the dollar over the first three years of the PSL at around PKR 105 per dollar, has gone to PKR 134 now.

Though all the teams signed a ten-year contract in November 2015, according to which they were liable to pay in US dollars, the franchises want to peg the rate to 2015 standards or pay in Pakistani rupees at the same rate when the contracts were signed. None of the franchises have broken even so far, crippled they feel, by the exchange rate as well as the taxes they are having to pay.

The first set of commercial and sponsorship rights deals the PSL signed when it launched have now ended, and with enhanced deals now being inked in, as well as the scare caused by Multan Sultans' financial meltdown, the remaining five have sensed this is the time to push for a greater slice of the revenue pool. The current financial model adopted by the PCB in 2016 offers equal shares from a central revenue pool to all franchises, despite the difference in franchise fees.

After Multan Sultans' ouster, the PCB is yet to invite a tender to bring in an owner for the sixth side, but various investors in Pakistan including Ali Tareen - the son of Jahangir Khan Tareen, a key figure in the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party - and Aqeel Karim Dhedhi, a prominent businessman, are among those to have shown their interest. The sixth team is presently being regulated by the PCB on its own and with the tender, the board will transfer the ownership to the buyers, allowing them to choose the name of the city.

weird - I thought these franchises were bought by business guys. why didn't they fix the FX rate or insist on rupee fees in the first place? they wouldn't be complaining if the dollar weakened agains the rupee, would they. dont have much sympathy for them im afraid, they knew what they were signing.

Karachi to host 5 PSL matches: Mani

KARACHI: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Ehsan Mani on Sunday said Karachi would host five matches of the Pakistan Super League (PSL), including the final.

"Our whole focus is on PSL. This year Karachi will host five PSL matches including the final. I am very much hopeful that many foreign players will tour Pakistan," Mani told reporters here at the National Stadium. He also admitted that the PSL had been playing a major role in changing the perception of foreign nations about Pakistan. "The PSL, no doubt, is playing a much better role in changing the perception of the cricket world about Pakistan. When the players come for PSL and when they go back they act as our representatives and tell their people that there is no any such issue in Pakistan," Mani said. He was quick to add that PSL had become a leading 'brand of the cricket world'. About the revival of international cricket in Pakistan Mani said that the PCB was in talks with all cricket boards.

However he reiterated that the Board was focusing on PSL. "When foreign coaches and other cricket officials come here they go back very happy. So it would be a great help for us in changing the perception of foreign nations about Pakistan when we are able to bring in more people here. It would just be a matter of time. InshaAllah if such a process continues we will be able to start international cricket series in Pakistan once again," said Mani, also a former head of the International Cricket Council (ICC). Responding to a query Mani said that media coverage of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) Emerging Teams Asia Cup was important. Karachi hosted the four-team Group B matches of the ACC Emerging Teams Asia Cup. Besides Pakistan, Bangladesh, Hong Kong and UAE featured in the group slots. Pakistan and Bangladesh have made it to the semi-finals which will be held in Colombo on December 13.

About the appointment of the Managing Director Wasim Khan for the Board, Mani said the job of the MD was to conduct day-to-day affairs of Board. About Pakistan's pathetic showing in the Test series against New Zealand in the UAE recently Mani retorted," It was part of cricket."

    Exactly 2 months to go!

What travesty it is that there is still no sign of that 6th team... With just 60 days to go, nobody knows which city's team it will be so no fanbase until now, there is no marketing time left as well for that franchise, and there is no merchandise and not sure how will they come up with all that in such a short time lol

PSL franchises fume as Pakistan board reveals financial details

Pakistan Super League (PSL) franchises were left seething after the Pakistan Cricket Board inadvertently revealed financial details of all teams to each other.

The Pakistan board had earlier asked for the financial statements of all five existing franchises in order to present a case in front of federal and provincial governments for tax relief for franchises.

All teams in the PSL had earlier complained to the PCB about taxes they have had to pay over and above the franchise rights fees – including holding and sales tax. The financial troubles of the now defunct Multan Sultans franchise also made the franchises anxious.

However, the Pakistan board seems to have made the situation even more tense by sharing confidential information with all franchises.

“I think it was probably a mistake but this is not something one expects from a professional organization,” a team owner was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz.

“It is certainly the lack of understanding about confidentiality. All over the world, the financial records are expected to be kept confidential. I don’t understand why Subhan [Ahmed, PCB chief operating officer] released the details. You don’t need to be a chartered accountant to understand the gravity of the situation.”

All franchises are eyeing a reworked revenue sharing deal with the Pakistan board, who signed a new TV rights deal worth $40 million.

The countdown to the start of the HBL Pakistan Super League 2019 has begun as the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Friday announced the schedule of the event, which will kick off with the tournament opener between defending champions Islamabad United and the sixth team* in Dubai on February 14, 2019. The tournament will culminate with the final in Karachi on March 17.

Thirty-four (34) matches will be played in the fourth edition and for the first time in the short history of this highly successful and much-awaited tournament, Lahore and Karachi will share eight matches between them at the backend of the 32-day event, said a spokesman for the PCB here on Friday.
Karachi’s National Stadium will host the first of their five matches on March 7, 2019 when Karachi Kings will take on Peshawar Zalmi under lights. The other four matches will be: Karachi Kings versus Quetta Gladiators on March 10, 2019, Qualifier 1 versus Qualifier 2 on March 13, 2019, Eliminator 2 on March 15, 2019 and the final on March 17, 2019.

“The iconic Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore will be the venue of three matches, namely: Lahore Qalandars versus Islamabad United on March 9, 2019, Lahore Qalandars versus the Sixth team on March 10, 2019
and Eliminator 1 (3 vs 4) on March 12, 2019. All three matches will be played under floodlights,” he added.

In addition to the Gaddafi Stadium and National Stadium, 14 matches will be played at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium in Dubai, four matches will be held at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi and eight matches will be staged at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium in Sharjah.

According to the event format, each side will play the other twice
with the top-four after 30 event matches advancing to the play-offs. In
the March 13, 2019 Qualifier, the table-toppers will play the
second-placed side with the winner progressing to the final. The
losing side will get a second chance to qualify for the final when, in
the March 15, 2019 Eliminator 2, they will play the winner of March 12, 2019 Eliminator 1, which will be between the third and fourth-placed
    sides.

The PCB is delighted to announce the schedule for HBL Pakistan Super League 2019, which marks two months to go to one of the PCB’s marquee events which continues to grow in reputation and stature.

“The PCB is committed to working harder to make the HBL PSL an even bigger and better tournament, with the focus being to provide top notch playing facilities to the players, increase the fan base and provide the followers complete entertainment, and ensure all interests of our key stakeholders are adequately and professionally taken care of,” he added. “The PCB believes the HBL PSL is a gateway to resumption of international cricket in Pakistan. By successfully staging eight matches in Lahore and Karachi with the support of the local authorities, the PCB is optimistic that it will once again prove to the world that Pakistan is as safe and secure a place as any other part of the world to play international cricket,” said the spokesman.

“The PCB would like to thank its esteemed commercial partners, including title sponsors HBL, for their continued support and patronage. Without the involvement and commitment of the sponsors, no event can be organised successfully. The PCB is confident that the strong and successful HBL PSL brand will also help the PCB’s commercial partners to secure maximum exposure and coverage both within and outside Pakistan.”In only in its fourth year, the PSL has grown into one of the biggest and most competitive tournaments on this planet, evident from the fact that the world’s leading and most attractive cricketers continue to make themselves available for this competition.

“South Africa’s AB de Villiers and Brendan Taylor of Zimbabwe, who will wear Lahore Qalandars’ kits, and Steve Smith of Australia, who will represent the sixth team, are three of the 19 players expected to make their PSL debuts in 2019,” he maintained.

The others 16 are: Fawad Ahmed, Qais Ahmed, Corey Anderson, Ian Bell, Dan Christian, Ben Dunk, Laurie Evans, Harry Gurney, Liam Livingstone, Wayne Madsen, Tom Moores, Sandeep Lamichanne, Wayne Parnell, Sikander Raza, Waqar Salamkheil and Phil Salt.

The players have also expressed their enthusiasm and interest in the start of the HBL PSL 2019. Waqar Younis, who is the mentor of Islamabad United, said: “The HBL SL is one of the most entertaining but difficult tournaments in which each match counts. You have to turn up at the top of your game every time you step onto the field so that you stay clear of the danger zone.” “Islamabad United have a talented and all-round side, with each and every member capable of consistently producing match-winning performances.—APP

PSL takes another step to encourage local talent

Pakistan Super League (PSL) in a bid to encourage local talent is allowing all the sixth franchises of the tournament to pick another Emerging player to shape up their 21-member squad for the fourth edition.

The new players will be picked from talented individuals franchises unearthed during their talent hunt programs, youngsters putting up impressive performances in the National T20 Cup or from the available pool of players.

All the six franchises of the league picked two players from the Emerging Category in the draft for PSL 4, these teams now have an additional budget to pick another youngster in the side and form the 21-member squad.

Earlier, franchises picked the 20-member squad, including their retained players. All teams had a composition of 3 players from Platinum, Diamond and Gold, while 5 players from Silver Category, followed by 2 and 4 players from Emerging and Supplementary.

The fourth season of the league will be played from February 14 to March 17.

Steve Smith ruled out of PSL4

The Pakistan Super League (PSL) franchise Multan Sultans will be without their star acquisition Steve Smith for the upcoming edition.

According to Cricket Australia, the former Australia captain left the ongoing Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) midway after suffering an elbow injury — for which a surgery is required.

The expected date of recovery is around one and half months which means that his participation in the upcoming edition of the PSL is unlikely.

“I am disappointed I won’t be able to play in HBL PSL but I wish Multan Sultans all the best for this year’s tournament,” said Steve Smith in an official statement released by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). “I was looking forward to playing the tournament and helping the team try to win the trophy. We have a talented team and I am confident that they will do very well.”

Legendary South African batsman AB de Villiers has announced that he will be visiting Pakistan in March as part of the Lahore Qalandars roster to play Pakistan Super League matches at the Gaddafi Stadium.

The Qalandars have by far been the most hapless side across the first three editions of the T20 league, having finished last on the points table every time.

The Fawad Rana-owned franchise's bid to shed the title of perennial bottom-dwellers got a massive boost in November when it drafted De Villiers with the first pick of the PSL Draft 2018.

The Proteas superstar gave Rana and Qalandars fans another reason to celebrate today as he revealed that he will still be with the side during the Pakistan-leg of PSL 4.

"I am delighted to confirm that I will represent Lahore Qalandars in front of our home crowds on 9 and 10 March, during the HBL PSL 2019," psl-t20 quotes De Villiers as saying. "I look forward to revisiting the Gaddafi Stadium and aim to play my part in helping Lahore Qalandars achieve something they have been aspiring for since the inception of this tournament in 2016."

De Villiers said he has fond memories of his last tour of Pakistan that came more than a decade ago. "I am fully aware that cricket is like a second religion in Pakistan," he said. "I still remember the support and appreciation we received in 2007. Furthermore, I feel I have a role to play in helping international cricket return to Pakistan. These have been some of the motivating factors for me to return to Lahore."

As expected, team owner Fawad was a happy camper after De Villiers committed to visiting Pakistan. “There can’t be a bigger and better news for Pakistan cricket fans and the HBL PSL 2019 on the day we are celebrating ‘one month to go’ that AB de Villiers has confirmed his availability for the two Lahore matches.

“De Villiers is one of the icons of international cricket, who has entertained his fans world-over, not only with his innovative and aggressive batting, but also with the flare, passion and agility that he always carries with him onto the field of play.

“I am certain he will further brighten the Gaddafi Stadium with his amazing talent and skills on 9 and 10 March and this good news is a gift for our Qalandars clan.”

PCB Chairman Ehsan Mani also welcomed De Villiers' decision and claimed that other international cricketers will also follow the South African's lead.
AB de Villiers agrees to playing Pakistan leg of PSL 2019

“We appreciate the decision of AB de Villiers and look forward to welcoming him to the home of Pakistan cricket. I am sure de Villiers’s appearance will attract new fans, and more eyeballs will follow the HBL PSL than ever before," Mani said.

“I am confident that de Villiers’s decision at the back of his fellow World XI, Zimbabwe, Sri Lanka and the Windies’ cricketers’ decisions to play in Lahore will encourage other leading cricketers and international sides to visit this cricket-passionate country.

“For the Lahore crowds, it will be a great opportunity to watch this generation’s cricket genius live in action. I am sure they will turn up in great numbers to support de Villiers as well as Lahore Qalandars and their opponents.”

Mohammad Hafeez, the new Qalandars skipper was just as ecstatic, adding: “De Villiers is one of the most respected cricketers in the world. He is a proven performer, who has added new dimensions to batting in white-ball cricket.

“Not just me but the entire Lahore Qalandars side will wait eagerly for the unique experience of sharing with him a flight to Lahore and then being in the same team kit in front of what I envisage will be a packed house.

“This will again be an opportunity for the Lahore crowds to show their passion, respect, love and hospitality, and I am confident that AB will take home memories which will bring him back again and again to this beautiful piece of land.”

De Villiers' announcement comes a day after The Sydney Morning Herald reported that Australia will not be coming to Pakistan for a one-day series scheduled to be held in March-April.

By my calculations the maximum players that need to be replaced are about 13 but it’s gonna be around 7 if we are lucky and it should be really.

Pollard, Brathwaite, Denly, Pooran, Munro, Jordan, all have Intl commitments whilst Smith is injured, also likely we can loose Bravo/Narine as with WICB you never know when they become alright with their players and Anderson, Dawson, Malan/Livingston (highly unlikely for them two) may need replacing, also let’s hope Afghanistan don’t go for wild card selections of Zahir Khan, Waqar or Qais Ahmed, going by this Multan have been handed major body blows.

Lets hope the replacements are good but Multan will now rely more on local players which is not a bad thing for Pakistan cricketer per se, just get Fawad Alam and you are set.

Hayden impressed by fast bowling talent in PSL

Former Australia great Mathew Hayden has shown great delight in watching exciting talent of fast bowling in the ongoing Pakistan Super League and singled-out Lahore Qalandars’ Haris Rauf as one for the future.

Hayden is here to commentate on the PSL matches and was impressed with Rawalpindi-born Lahore’s 25-year-old Rauf, who took a match-winning four for 23 in Lahore’s 23-run win over Karachi Kings in Dubai on Saturday.

Hayden said he particularly enjoyed the fast bowling talent.

“In particular I have enjoyed the fast bowling talent in this PSL,” Hayden told www.psl-t20.com.

“The talent of the players, guys like Haris Rauf, to be discovered from basically non-traditional development programme and then come to the high level and performing and showing his talent at a higher level, is amazing,” he said.

Rauf is regarded as the latest Rawalpindi Express (Shoaib Akhtar was first called Rawalpindi Express for his express bowing) after discovered in a talent hunt camp in Gujranwala in September 2017. He was later part of the Lahore’s development tour to Australia.

Rauf said he loves to bowl fast and his primary goal is to play for Pakistan after good showing in the PSL.

Hayden, who briefly held the record for the highest Test score of 380 he made against Zimbabwe at Perth in 2003, reckons Rauf could be a fear factor for Pakistan at the international level.

“He (Rauf) is kind of opposition side’s fear for Pakistan. That unknown factor because the reality is that there may be a bunch of fast bowlers who could not have been recognised in Pakistan cricket and to come to the fore in the PSL is amazing.

“There have been a couple of wrong-footed bowlers and the proliferation of left-arm fast bowlers (in Pakistan), we have a couple of left-armers in Australia. That side (of exploring the fast bowlers’ talent) stands out for me.”

Hayden, who played 103 Tests, 161 ODIs and nine T20Is in a glittering career, said getting a connection with Pakistan cricket excites him.

“It’s been good for me personally (exposure in the PSL) as I had little connection with Pakistan cricket. I never toured Pakistan and only ever seen them on the neutral territories in Sri Lanka and UAE (in 2002).”

Hayden believes the main objective through PSL is to get international cricket back to Pakistan.

“It’s hard to say how the PSL has been compared to other leagues as I have been to one venue for just four days,” opined Hayden. “But the beauty of the PSL is that they do explore the new talent.

“The ultimate goal, however, for Pakistan cricket is to get cricket back to Pakistan. I am not going to Pakistan because of my prior commitments but the goal should be to bring cricket back to Pakistan.”

Hayden believes Twenty20 cricket is growing in popularity.

“The way that cricket is set up, there is no question that there is too much cricket. But having said, that I am not sure that it’s an invective blow on one of the formats of the game.

“The reality is that T20 cricket is a growing product and is growing interest in the game across the broader demographic of the game as well and that has the ability to be able to capitalise the effect of the other formats of the game.”

PSL to open mid-season trading window for 48-hours

The fourth edition of Pakistan Super League (PSL) is all set to introduce a mid-season trade window for the first time in the league. The mid-season trade window will open later this week which allows each team to exchange two unused players and restructure their teams for the remainder of the tournament.

The window will remain active for 48 hours and only those players who have not played any match in the tournament for their franchises will be eligible for trading.

The idea was accepted by all the franchises before the starting of season four. It will give an opportunity for the franchises to cover the weakness of the teams by trading a player which isn’t needed by them.

The deal, however, requires the concerned players to agree to the switch.

Apart from local players, international players will also be eligible for trading provided all the criteria mentioned above for trading is fulfilled by them.

Lahore Qalandars’ Haris Sohail might consider a switch as he hasn’t played a single game this season.

The tournament’s first leg is being played across the UAE in Dubai, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi, with Quetta Gladiators ruling the points table so far.
