Why PSL franchises are reluctant to hold entire PSL inside Pakistan?

ISLAMABAD - Pakistan Super League (PSL) is finally coming back to Pakistan as all of the next edition is scheduled to be held in Pakistan.

However, the six franchises are slightly reluctant at holding the entire event in Pakistan, saying that less participation from foreign players will damage the reputation of the league.

The team owners are expected to meet PCB Chairman Ehsan Mani on Monday following his invitation to address their concerns.

A number of issues are expected to be raised in the meeting including bank guarantees and the lack of communication between the board and the franchises.

Sources say that the franchise owners believe that conducting only half the event in Pakistan is feasible and that it will be difficult for them to convince foreign players to stay in the country for the entirety of PSL.

HBL PSL5 matches in Peshawar face stumbling block

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) faces a challenging task with regards to hosting Habib Bank Limited (HBL) Pakistan Super League (PSL) matches in Peshawar, during the fifth edition next year.

According to details, the incomplete renovation work at Arbab Niaz Stadium is a massive hurdle in PCB’s plans to schedule matches in Peshawar.

HBL PSL franchise Peshawar Zalmi had expressed its desire to hold three matches at their home venue, during the next season.

“The stadium in Peshawar won’t be ready, by the time next season starts, which is why we won’t be considering it for PSL5,” said Senior General Manager Operations, PSL, Usman Wahla in reply to an email inquiry from Peshawar Zalmi owner Javed Afridi.

Upon receiving this news, Afridi said that he had brought up this suggestion on the directives of Prime Minister Imran Khan and had discussed the same with Chairman PCB Ehsan Mani and Managing Director Wasim Khan.

“Chairman Mani will meet PM Imran in the upcoming few days, where he will talk about this matter. It’s only after that we will be in a position to further comment on this situation,” said Wahla in another email response.

Sources further stated that the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s provincial government is also keen on hosting HBL PSL5 matches in Peshawar but the completion of renovation work and convincing foreign players to play there is a major stumbling block.

PSL5 Draft could be delayed: Latif

Former Pakistan wicketkeeper-batsman Rashid Latif has said that the draft of Habib Bank Limited (HBL) Pakistan Super League (PSL) season five could be delayed due to multiple reasons.

According to details, Latif said that time constraints and availability of foreign players can prove to be a stumbling block with regards to holding the draft as per schedule — which is usually around November every year.

“PSL5 Draft could be delayed due to less time and availability of foreign players,” tweeted Latif.

Latif had also said that the HBL PSL is now financially stable but the board is deliberately not releasing payments to the franchises.

“PCB should release PSL4 profit to all 6 franchises. PCB’s profit margin is 200% but franchises are not happy,” he added.

Earlier, the franchises had refused to deposit bank guarantee, for the fifth edition of the country’s premier T20 league.

The franchise owners have reservations on several issues but one of the major areas of concern is regarding the financial accounts of previous edition. Nearly six months have passed but the PCB is yet to finalise the HBL PSL financial statements, which is why the franchises have decided against depositing bank guarantee.

The franchises are also of the opinion the PCB should no longer obtain bank guarantee because the league is now stable enough to operate without it.
