We have all seen those graphics in league tables. The sides who reach the next round, and those who don't, separated by a silver line. And while Lahore Qalandars have been on the wrong end of that silver line for two years straight, it becomes a silver lining by the time the PSL draft rolls around. For the second year running, they had first pick at the draft. And for the second year running, they chose an explosive opening batsman, set to become the star attraction. Last time it was Brendon McCullum, this season it is Chris Lynn.

Lynn is one of a handful of international stars picked to play in Pakistan's increasingly ambitious T20 competition. Karachi Kings snared Mitchell Johnson, Quetta Gladiators went for Carlos Brathwaite and Peshawar Zalmi invested in Evin Lewis, ensuring a number of high-profile new faces at the PSL next season.

Multan Sultans, taking part in the glitz and chaos of T20 franchise cricket for the first time, made a number of nifty, knowledgeable picks and could well emerge as a force to be reckoned with. With an encouraging mix of Caribbean flair - three of their four foreign buys are West Indian - and home-grown talent - the likes of Shoaib Malik, Sohail Tanvir and Ahmed Shehzad - Multan seem to have hit the ground running. T20 cricket demands nothing less.

The PSL is hamstrung, to some extent, by a clash with the ICC World Cup qualifiers next March, rendering uncertain the status of several West Indian and Afghanistan players. Players such as Lewis - who would have been a possible first pick in the Platinum category - ended up being a supplementary pick for Peshawar Zalmi. Rashid Khan was the only Afghanistan player bought on the night, and even he could only made it to the supplementary list (Quetta's). There were no takers for Chris Gayle.

Franchises had to be even more judicious in prioritising availability over star power considering Australia will be in South Africa and England in New Zealand around the same time as the PSL. This led to Kolpak players and those not in contention for their countries becoming a big draw. Colin Ingram was picked by Karachi Kings in the first round, while retirement made Johnson and Luke Ronchi all the more attractive.

There was limited excitement in the way of elite Pakistan cricketers changing franchises - most of them had already been retained - but even so, it was pleasing to see several owners keeping faith in the emerging players from the previous year. The sensations of 2016 - like Hassan Khan of Quetta and Hussain Talat of Islamabad United - have another chance to shine on the big stage.

The most emotional story of the night though was Lahore Qalandars' Aaqib Javed drafting in Raza Hasan. The left-arm spinner was barely out of his teens when he played for Pakistan in the 2012 World T20, before his life spiraled out of control. Banned for two years in 2015 for cocaine use, he was spotted again by Aaqib, who said he struggled to even gain entry into Gaddafi Stadium and was reduced to playing on the streets. Aaqib had promised to get Raza's career back on track, and on Sunday, he kept his end of the bargain.

Whoever said T20 cricket couldn't tug at the heartstrings?

      Teams prepare for PSL draft

Lahore: A total of 501 foreign and local cricketers will be available for selection at the HBL Pakistan Super League Player Draft 2017, scheduled to take place on Sunday in Lahore.

Teams have already retained nine players each and will go into the PSL Player Draft 2017 to pick one Platinum, one Diamond, one Gold, two Silver and two Emerging players each in order to complete their squads of 16, a spokesman of the Pakistan Cricket Board said on Friday.

“Teams may also pick up to four players in the Supplementary rounds,” he said adding each team will have a salary cap of $1.2 million (Dh4.4 million) for a squad of 20 players.

The spokesman said top names such as Chris Lynn, JP Duminy, Imran Tahir, Carlos Brathwaite, Shane Watson, Dwayne Bravo, Jimmy Neesham, Angelo Mathews, Mustafizur Rahman, Mitchell McClenaghan, Mitchell Johnson, Colin Munro, Luke Ronchi, Adil Rashid, Wayne Parnell, Thisara Perera and Colin Ingram will be up for selection at the draft.

Promising cricketers from the Pakistan Under-19 set-up and top performers of the recently concluded U-19 Pentangular Cup have been added to the Emerging roster, he said.

The players up for selection at this year’s draft are divided into five primary categories.

“Starting this year, teams may also nominate Talent Hunt Discovery picks. These nominations comprise of players unearthed during talent hunt programs who do not qualify as Emerging players,” he added.

The PSL 2017-18 will also witness the debut of Multan Sultans, making it a six-team affair along with Islamabad United, Karachi Kings, Lahore Qalandars, Peshawar Zalmi and Quetta Gladiators.

When is the PSL draft scheduled to take place and where?

The PSL draft is set to take place on November 12 at 3pm local time at the National Cricket Academy in Lahore.

Who gets the first draft pick?

That would be Lahore Qalandars because according to the draft rule, the team that finished last in the previous tournament gets the first pick each round. The side that finished second last gets the second pick, and so on.

Then why is the new franchise, Multan Sultans, getting the last pick in every round?

Playing their first season, Multan Sultans had no players to retain or release, and instead chose nine players from the expansion draft. In other words, they chose nine players from the list of players that other franchises opted to release. That itself was an opportunity to draft up a team of sorts.

According to the rules, five teams from the previous season were given a deadline to retain nine players from their existing contracted players, releasing all others from their roster. Then, Multan were allowed to select players from the list of all released players without any constraint.

Therefore, it was ruled that Multan would get the last pick having enjoyed this advantage, with Peshawar Zalmi getting the second last pick, owing to them having finished top last season.

How will the entry of the sixth team, Multan Sultans, affect the format?

In a sense, the entry of Multan Sultans makes no difference to the format, with the only change being the increase in the number of group games played per side - from eight to 10. The number of overall games before the next round increases from 20 to 30 as a result, with the tournament being played over a few extra days. The number of matches in the playoffs will remain the same, with three games to be played before the finalists are decided.

Why do Peshawar Zalmi get the third pick of the first Gold and both Silver rounds, even though they should get the fifth pick?

That is because Peshawar Zalmi traded Shahid Afridi to Karachi Kings. Instead, they swapped picks in the first Gold and Silver rounds, meaning Peshawar Zalmi get the third pick in both rounds.

In that case, how do Karachi Kings have the first pick of the first round of the Gold category? It was meant for Lahore Qalandars.

Lahore Qalandars traded in Sohail Khan from Karachi Kings in exchange for their first pick quota in the Gold round, in addition to Mohammad Rizwan. And since Karachi had already exchanged their Gold round pick with Peshawar, Lahore had to swap their first pick with pick five in the Gold category.

How many matches will be played in Pakistan? How many in Lahore, how many in Karachi?

The PCB has not released the schedule for the third edition of the tournament yet but had promised that a few matches would be played in Pakistan. The league stage, as yet, is scheduled to be played in the UAE. Lahore is a potential venue for the final and the playoff matches while the National Stadium in Karachi is presently undergoing extensive renovation work, and is reportedly behind schedule with respect to preparedness in time for next year's PSL. Even so, the PCB is bullish about the prospect of some matches taking place in Karachi.

How many players are in the draft?

A massive 501, with 308 foreign players listed. However, the vast majority will go unselected, obviously. Some of the star attractions include Chris Lynn, Imran Tahir, Mitchell Johnson and Mustafizur Rahman. Each team will have a salary cap of $1.2 million for a squad of 20 players.

The 4 supplementary picks are hard because they can only play when a player is injured,That's why teams can't pick too many platinum players for the supplementary rounds because they won't be getting a lot of playing time.

Mostly 1 emerging player,Or a few Gold and silver players,Maximum one Diamond or Platinum player.
