PCB allows Inzamam to mentor Lahore Qalandars

LAHORE (Roznama Dunya) – Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has conditionally allowed chief selector Inzamam-ul-Haq to mentor Lahore Qalandars in the upcoming edition of Pakistan Super League (PSL), and to buy a team in the recently-announced T10 cricket league, reported Roznama Dunya on Saturday.

According to details, Inzamam conducted a meeting with PCB Chairman Najam Sethi in this regard and was allowed to work on both these projects on a condition that he will have to report to PCB immediately whenever his services are required regardless of his other engagements.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, a PCB official further told that Inzamam-ul-Haq will not receive salary from the board until he works for Lahore Qalandars, and has also been barred from sitting in the dugout with national team like other officials.

Lahore Qalandars’ Salman Irshad shines in Australia

Lahore Qalandars’ promising find Salman Irshad, who was spotted by the scouts during the player development program, has been on fire in Australia’s domestic circuit. Salman, 22, was spotted during the open trails conducted by Qalandars in Asad Kashmir for the Jazz Rising Stars. He was tagged as one of the most prized find during the camp.

Australian cricket club Hawkesbury had recently signed him up during the cricketer’s visit to Australia. He made his match debut down-under and scalped a five-wicket haul on Saturday. Playing in the NSW premier cricket, second-grade tournament, Salman rocked the University of New South Wales as he restricted them to 189/7 and ended up with figures of 5/46 in 14 overs.

    Prolific performance
Out of his five wickets, three of the dismissals were bowled while one was trapped in front (LBW). It clearly shows the kind of accuracy he poses, and the line and length he bowled during the game. CEO of Lahore Qalandars Atif Rana was over the moon as he felt it is the result of the talent hunt that was conducted. “It’s the success of our rising stars program that players picked on merit are performing at every level,” Rana told Geo.tv

    Salman on a rise
Legendary former cricketer Aqib Javed, Qalandar’s Director Cricket Operations, said that he was contacted by his counterpart from Hawkesburry club who praised Salman’s performance. “They were very impressed with Salman’s bowling, especially his inswings. He’s a great potential for Pakistan cricket,” Aqib told geo.tv

Solid top order batting. Fast bowling a bit weak. Good spinners though.

    Lahore have a slight problem.

They don't have a specialist keeper.

Apart from that they have a strong squad.

KARACHI: With the induction of some of the best T20 players in the squad, the management of Pakistan Super League (PSL) team Lahore Qalandars is confident of a better show in the third edition of the series next year.

Lahore Qalandars picked Australia’s most sought after T20 player Chris Lynn, Mustafiz ur Rehman of Bangladesh, and Pakistan’s Bilal Asif in Sunday’s draft.

It also picked left-arm spinner Raza Hassan and all-rounder Sohail Akhtar in silver category, while Shaheen Afridi and Ghulam Mudassar were picked in the category of emerging players.

In the Supplementary category, the team picked Sri Lanka’s Angelo Matthews, New Zealand's Mitchell McClenaghan, and Gulraiz Sadaf to complete the squad.

Qalandars’ Chairman Fawad Rana told Geo.tv that the squad will not let fans down.

“I am confident that our team will perform the best in PSL3 and provide Lahore fans reasons to cheer about,” Rana said. “We have a balanced squad.”

Rana also highlighted the fact that players groomed by the franchise during the last two years have become a part of other franchises now which, according to him, is a sign of the players’ development program of the team.

“Players like Saif Badar and Mohammad Irfan Junior being picked by other franchises shows that our investment in these players was the right decision, and the ultimate beneficiary of this investment will be Pakistan cricket,” Rana said.

“We also picked Sohail Akhtar, who was our find in the last season and Raza Hassan, who is making a comeback. We have worked a lot on development of these two players,” he said

The squad is a blend of young and experienced players.

“We have good combination in top order with Fakhar Zaman, Chris Lynn and Baz with Umar Akmal and Angelo Matthews in the middle order,” Qalandars’ Director of Cricket Operations Aaqib Javed told Geo.tv.

“And then we have Mustafiz ur Rehman and Mitchell McClenaghan in fast bowling, joined by Sohail Khan, Bilawal Bhatti and Shaheen Afrid, so we have a good bowling unit as well,” he added.

The former Pakistani fast bowler said that he was confident that Lahore Qalandars will finish the PSL 3 on a victorious note.

LAHORE QALANDARS squad: Brendon McCullum, Umar Akmal, Sunil Narine, Fakhar Zaman, Yasir Shah, Sohail Khan, Cameron Delport, Aamir Yamin, Bilawal Bhatti, Chris Lynn, Mustafiz ur Rehman, Bilal Asif, Raza Hassan, Sohail Akhtar, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Ghulam Mudassar, Angelo Matthews, Mitchell McClenaghan and Gulraiz Sadaf.

McCullum excited to see 'new fearless and selfless' Qalandars squad

Brendon McCullum, the fearless and selfless captain of PSL team Lahore Qalandars, has expressed confidence in the team performing well in the third edition of Pakistan Super League next year.

In an exclusive video message, Brendon said that he’s excited to see the new recruits of Lahore Qalandars and the squad has a good blend of experienced and young cricketers.

“I welcome all the new recruits to the Lahore Qalandars,” said the 36-year-old cricketer from New Zealand.

“I am absolutely excited about the squad that we have got, I think we have a good mix of youth and experienced players. We have got the squad made of guys who like to play attacking cricket and fearless cricket as well and also the selfless cricket,” he said.

The former New Zealand captain mentioned Australian Chris Lynn as a good signing saying that he’s one of the most exciting batsmen in the shortest format of the game.

“To me, he (Chris Lynn) is the most exciting T20 batsman in the world at the moment and it’s fantastic that he’s going to join our ranks,” McCullum said.

“He’s the guy whom all our fans in Lahore would look forward to watching and look forward to bringing him in the squad,” the former Kiwi skipper added.

The veteran of 101 Tests, 260 ODIs and 71 T20Is hoped that the new look squad of Lahore Qalandars will not let fans down in the next season.

“This could be a big year for us, we are going to play exciting cricket and we hope that you will enjoy,” he said will addressing fans whom he also requested to get behind the squad.

Brendon McCullum also thanked those who were not retained by the Lahore Qalandars squad for the third edition and recognised their efforts for the franchise.

“The Qalandars is a family as we known and we wish you guys all the very best for whatever the future hold for you with other teams you all have played a huge part for the Qalandars,” he said while addressing the players who were not retained.

A look at the players that can take Lahore Qalandars to the trophy
    By Faizan Lakhani

Despite not being able to take home the trophy during the last two season of Pakistan Super League (PSL), the Lahore Qalandars continue to be one of the most discussed franchises of the league, and the most favourite as well.

The team's mantra of being selfless and fearless has empowered players to go and express themselves without fearing the consequences of results and that’s what they have done in the last two seasons.

With the induction of some exceptional T20 players in the squad, the management Lahore Qalandars is confident of a better outcome in the third edition of the series next year.

Let's have a look at the top five players of Lahore Qalandars for PSL 3

The brilliant batsman from New Zealand has been retained as captain by the Lahore Qalandars for the third season of PSL and fans are hoping for some brutal batting from him. An electrifying batsman, Brendon McCullum has the ability to bat at any position and whenever the team needs him.

With 7 T20 centuries with two coming in international matches, Brendon poses a serious threat to bowlers of opposing teams.

The former Kiwi skipper is one of the most experienced players of the shortest format with around 300 T20 matches to his credit.

The 27-year-old Aussie batsman was the top pick for the team in this year’s draft. He is undoubtedly the most exciting and the most sought after T20 player at the moment. His inclusion gives Lahore Qalandars fans an opportunity to see their team getting some flying starts in the next season.

In 2015, Chris Lynn scored 101 off 51 deliveries against the Hobart Hurricanes to score his first T20 century, this year in IPL, playing for Kolkata Knight Riders, he hit a 19-ball 50 against Gujarat Lions, that innings included 8 sixes.

A shoulder injury following that match kept him out for a month but he came back strong with a 22 ball 50 against Royal Challengers Bangalore

He finished the IPL season with a staggering strike rate of over 180 and despite missing most of the season, was one of the most important players for the Kolkata Knight Riders.

Lynn is one player whom any franchise would have loved to pick and Lahore Qalandars did the right thing by opting for the Aussie batsman at the first opportunity.

Fakhar is one of the most loved Pakistani Cricketers these days after scoring a match-winning century against the India in the final of the ICC Champions Trophy earlier this year.

Known for his aggressive style of batting, local boy Fakhar will have heavy responsibilities on his shoulders to keep the batting momentum going.

He made his T20 debut in 2013, and scored a T20 century in 2015, an unbeaten 100 of 62 balls, helping his team Abbottabad chase 196 runs in 20 overs against Peshawar.

Since his debut, Fakhar has played 45 T20 matches and has scored 1,078 runs in 43 innings with an impressive strike rate of over 132.

Sunil Narine is one of the best spinners of the ball and can single-handedly bowl his team to victory. The 29-year-old cricketer from Trinidad is usually known for his bowling skills, but recently he has proved that he can smash the opposition with the bat.

Earlier this year, in IPL, Sunil Narine scored a half-century off 15 balls while opening the innings for Kolkata Knight Riders against Royal Challenger Bangalore with Chris Lynn. The duo of Lynn and Narine added 105 runs off 36 deliveries for KKR, the most by a team in power play overs in T20 Cricket. He is also considered the chief architect of KKR’s win in IPL 2012 and 2014.

Narine is one of only three bowlers with over 300 wickets in T20 Cricket, with the two others being DJ Bravo and Lasith Malinga. His career bowling economy rate 5.85 among the world's best.

With his impressive bowling stats and ability to surprise opponents with the bat, Sunil is surely going to be a player on which LQ team will be depending on.

Raza Hassan at 25 is still considered among the best talents Pakistan has produced during the last few years. He is making a comeback after serving a two-year ban for failing a dope test with the aim to reclaim his lost glory.

His ban expired earlier this year and he made an impressive comeback to domestic cricket this season taking 32 wickets in 11 games for National Bank of Pakistan.

Raza first came into limelight in 2011, when he was 18 and defended 16 runs in the super over leading Rawalpindi to the title win against Karachi. He was smashed for a six on the first ball but did not lose his nerve and conceded only one run of the last five deliveries.

Next year, he was included in Pakistan’s squad and was quickly noticed as a potential future weapon for the country.

In 2015, Raza tested positive for a banned substance which closed the door on him for two years. But, despite being away from all cricket facilities, he kept on working hard and looked promising in his comeback.

With his skills, he’s one of the players to watch for Lahore Qalandars in the upcoming season.

Lahore Qalandars’ Imran Butt suspended after failing dope test

LAHORE: Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited’s (SNGPL) Imran Butt who was in Lahore Qalandars’ squad for next year’s Pakistan Super League (PSL) has tested postive on a random doping test carried out by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) during the ongoing Quaid-e-Azam Trophy. As a part of the formal standard operating procedure he has been suspended from playing all forms of cricket for now.

The 21-year-old Butt was in contention to play the third edition edition of PSL III with Lahore Qalandars, however, now he stares at a maximum two year ban if he fails to justify himself in front of an inquiry committee which will be formed by the PCB soon.

As recently as 2015, Pakistan’s lead spinner Yasir Shah failed a doping test conducted in United Arab Emirates (UAE), however, he was handed a three-month ban by the International Cricket Council (ICC) after Shah maintained that he had accidentally taken the pills of his wife. In the past, Shoaib Akhtar and Mohammad Asif had been banned for testing positive for doping.

Imran butt was actually a good player as well,Hope he gets a low ban,It's quite hard being a pak fan these days it feels everything is against you,Bowlers getting injured,These drugs tests,Being given the least amount of matches even behind Bangladesh,A very Poor Board that is built upon corruption,Our players being banned because of dodgy actions,The spot fixing scandals of 4 good players,Poor domestic cricket,The least said about the states of the grounds the better,This abrupt and narrow minded thinking from Sethi,Players being banned for having medicines,Players not being taught how to be professional,And finally its so boring that we have only played 1 full series since our champions trophy win which is pretty astonishing.

Qalandars coach delighted after finding ‘dream pacer’

Hailing the talent of bowling sensation Salman Irshad from Kashmir, head coach of Lahore Qalandars, Aaqib Javed, has said that finding him is ‘a dream come true.’

In an interview, former Pakistan coach said that the moment he saw Salman bowling in the nets, he realised that this bowler has potential to perform for Pakistan cricket.

“I saw him bowling at 145kmph during Rising Stars trials of Lahore Qalandars in Azad Kashmir and that very moment I decided to pick him,” Geo News quoted Aaqib.

“There is no doubt that after fine tuning and some training, he’ll be able to bowl at speed of more than 150kmph,” Aaqib added.

He further said that the inclusion of a player from Kashmir is a matter of pride not only for him but also for the Lahore Qalandars team and for the Pakistan Super League. “Finding him was like a dream coming true for us,” Aqib said.

“We wanted a bowler of this kind. A bowler with strong action and pace, a bowler who can change mindset of the players from that region,” the former Pakistan pacer said.

The 22-year-old bowler was picked by Lahore Qalandars in extended squad earlier as the 21st member of the team by the franchise. He is inducted as talent hunt player by the franchise.

From Kashmir to PSL: Salman Irshad credits Lahore Qalandars for happiest day of his life

KARACHI: Once upon a time, he roamed in the streets of Rawalakot, Azad Kashmir, seeking an opportunity to display his talent, which he wasn’t getting.

The situation was pushing this talented fast bowler into oblivion, but he didn’t lose hope and remained persistent.

Then came Lahore Qalandars’ program Rising Stars and the franchise conducted trials in Azad Jammu & Kashmir – the first of its kind in the region, which gave him a new ray of hope.

That’s how Salman Irshad emerged on the country’s cricketing scene.

He was spotted during the Rising Stars trials in AJK, his consistent bowling at over 140kmph speed impressed everyone, including Qalandars’ director cricket operations.

He was soon picked for Lahore Qalandars’ Rising Stars squad that travelled to Australia for a quadrangular tournament, where his performance was so impressive that an Australian Cricket Club Hawksberry CC signed him for remainder of the season.

Irshad, 22, is now set to play in the PSL — platform which may serve as a stepping stone for his selection for Pakistan cricket team.

He is now looking forward to perform at the bigger stage.

“I am so happy to be part of Lahore Qalandars squad for PSL 3,” Salman said in an exclusive video message sent to Geo.tv.

“I don’t have words to express how joyous I am today. This is the happiest day of my life,” he said in his emotional message.

Irshad said that everyone in Kashmir is happy to see him becoming part of Lahore Qalandars and playing top-level cricket in Pakistan.

“I am receiving calls from every part of Kashmir. They’re telling me that they all are praying for me,” he said.

“I give credit to Aaqib Javed and Qalandars management for picking me from nowhere and placing at the top level.”

Atif Rana, CEO of Lahore Qalandars, said that with Salman’s inclusion in Qalandars’ squad, the Kashmir cricket has formally been brought into mainstream cricket arena of the country.

“We have practically connected Kashmir to Pakistan in cricket. We wanted to do something for cricket in Azad Kashmir which motivated us to organise open trials there,” said Rana.

“Salman was spotted during the trials and I am very hopeful that he’s one talent who can become first Kashmiri player to represent Pakistan at international level,” he said.

The third edition of Pakistan Super League commences from February 22 with opening encounter between new entrants Multan Sultans and defending champions Peshawar Zalmi.

Lahore Qalandars is the second most expensive franchises in the Pakistan Super League. The franchise is owned by Qatar Lubricants Company Limited (QALCO). The team is lead by Brendon McCullum while Pakistan’s sensation, Fakhar Zaman is the vice-captain. The team coached by Aqib Javed earned the “Spirit of the Game” and “Fair play” awards in 2016. In the second edition of the PSL, the Lahore franchise started off quite well but suffered continuous defeats in the later stages.

The franchise representing the city of Lahore has been trying to provide opportunities to young talent. Lahore Qalandars featured in the Emirates T20 Trophy in March 2017. Qalandars played two matches out of which they lost one against Lancashire and won the one against Birmingham.

Atif Rana, the Chief Executive of Lahore Qalandars expressed that the essential motivation force for him and the workforce has been the plan to give a chance to the new rising talent of Pakistan. The PSL franchise organized trials in Azad Kashmir where almost 35,000 young cricketers took part. The trials were held in August 2017. 16 young cricketers were selected by Lahore Qalandars while the franchise sent many other players to Australia for further training.

Salman has the potential to evolve into a great player
Salman Irshad, the rising fast bowler was one such find by the Lahore Qalandars. Impressed by his consistent pace, Salman Irshad – a resident of Rawalkot was picked in Azad Kashmir trails. Irshad was signed by Australian Cricket Club Hawksberry CC after his impressive performance during Qalandars’ recent visit.

He picked five wickets in his debut game NSW premier cricket, second-grade tournament. His impressive figures of 14-4-46-5 helped his club restrict University of New South Wales to a mere 189 runs. Lahore Qalandars’ CEO termed the pacer’s success as a fruit of the talent hunt conducted purely on merit.

“It’s the success of our rising stars program that players picked on merit are performing at every level,” he said while talking to Geo.tv. “They were very impressed with Salman’s bowling, especially his inswings. He’s a great potential for Pakistan cricket,” he added.
