Global Zalmi League to start in Ajman on Sunday

The Global Zalmi League — owned and organised by Peshawar Zalmi is set to commence Sunday in Ajman, United Arab Emirates, with 16 foreign teams scheduled to participate.

The event will bring together "Pakistani and Indian overseas cricketers" and "will unite the two nations", a press release issued Saturday read.

In this regard, Peshawar Zalmi Chairman Javed Afridi expressed his pleasure at the series and welcomed all the teams. It will ignite the hunger of cricket fans before the start of the Pakistan Super League (PSL), he said.

The series' first match will see Dubai facing Victoria Zalmi in Ajman's Eden Gardens.

It's noteworthy that Peshawar Zalmi captain Daren Sammy, alongside other superstars, will be attending the semifinal and final matches of the series, scheduled for February 20.

Darren Sammy: Feels good to play a small part in bringing cricket back to Pakistan

What’s the key mantra to win a T20 tournament? Just draft Darren Sammy to your side.

Sammy, the bowler, had routed the English batting on his Test debut, claiming 7 for 66 in second innings. Sammy the bowler has taken a backseat now. He makes sporadic appearances at best. Yet, he wins an all-important final with the ball.

In the final of Hong Kong T20 Blitz 2018, Galaxy Gladiators Lantau were cruising in their chase of 201 against Hung Hom Jaguars, courtesy Kumar Sangakkara’s belligerence.

The equation read 73 from 42 balls and Sanga was on 73 off 43. Jaguars skipper Kinchit Shah threw the ball to Sammy, who had gone for almost 14 an over in the tournament. In the league match between these two, Sammy was plundered for 52 from 3 overs. Anton Devcich had hit him for 3 consecutive sixes. Here was Sammy, jogging in to bowl to Sanga and Devcich ahead of the regular bowlers.

He played with the length, kept the batsmen guessing and the over went 1 1 1 1 0 1. Three singles later, Sanga succumbed to pressure in the next over and it was Jaguars’ game to lose.

Now 65 off 30. Gladiators still had big hitters in Devcich, Jade Dernbach and James Franklin. Sammy’s next over, the 16th of the innings, went for 4 and Dernbach was dismissed.

He was now given the task of defending 22 off the final over against Devcich and Franklin. His final 3 deliveries went for 13 but he had sealed the game with his first 3, giving away 2.

What ensued was typical Caribbean-style celebration at a Mong Kok. “[It was all] thanks to Ben [Laughlin]. He told me he was going to give me 20 [off the final over] but gave me 22. The wives of the owners said they want nothing but the cup and we delivered today.”

Laughlin bowled the penultimate over with Gladiators needed 31. He gave away just 9.

The wags said ” Sammy we need to win the cup this year No excuses” so we granted them their wish. #HappyWivesHappyLives#champions @hunghomjdjaguars pic.twitter.com/s3hXuIuQBV

    The winning moment:

Congratulations to the @JDJaguars on becoming @HKT20Blitz 2018 Champions! They win a thrilling final over @GGLantau by 6 runs.#RoaringJagspic.twitter.com/CBZBWJq5Fv

Sammy is a rare breed. Cricketing numbers will never tell the tale of the St Lucian giant (quite literally), who has an international stadium named after him. The two-time world champion captain was surprisingly not leading Jaguars in Hong Kong. Kinchit, 22, a Hong Kong international and son of the team owner led the side.

“No, it’s not my team,” Sammy implies that he doesn’t own it when asked why he isn’t leading the side. “We already have a captain, Kinchit, and he has done a terrific job, man.”

Sammy is right. Kinchit led the Jaguars to their maiden title win in the Blitz. Explaining his role, Sammy elaborated: “You know, whatever team I play in, captain or not, I will play a leadership role and that’s why I am here. I try to make an impact with my performance or in the dressing room. That’s what I try to do.”

Sammy was brilliant on the field, nabbing some stunners and also contributed with an important 15-ball 21 in the final.

    The Hong Kong experience

The Blitz got off to a cold start, quite literally. The temperatures hovered in the single digit. A handful of South Asian, Australian and British expatriates were the audience.

Agreed mate.. Need that Sun to be shinning or else im not coming out of bed.https://t.co/SBtzDu0TFb

    — Daren Sammy (@darensammy88) February 6, 2018

It got warmer as the week progressed, and the crowd swelled. The final witnessed a full house. Sammy has emerged as one of the ambassadors of this sport and hopes to play a significant part in growth of cricket in Hong Kong: “It has been good. Hong Kong isn’t a place known for its cricket but you see the talent on display.”

Trivia: The first recorded cricket match in Hong Kong dates back to 1841. Hong Kong and Shanghai play the first inter-port match in 1866 — which, if you think about it, pre-dates the first Australian tour of England.

“Look at the number of international players turning up. It shows that the interest is there. It’s definitely bigger this year than last year. Hopefully the local players could learn from the likes of the Sangakkaras and Akmals and Laughlins and Bothas and improve their game. Hopefully, Hong Kong cricket will improve from here,” added Sammy.

Just like Sanga, Sammy advocated for the quality of the tournament as well. He emphasised on the cramp schedule and spoke about the need to market it even better: It’s [the intensity] good. Obviously playing everyday, so if you are not fit enough,it is going to take toil on your body. The only disappointing thing is that the crowd [other than the final] hasn’t been as big as last year. So, hopefully we can market it more so that more people fill the stands. I think the cricket has been of very high standards.”

    ‘Looking forward to PSL’

“For some reason I moved my head to get a better view and a split second later I felt a bullet fizz past my ear into the vacant seat,” were Sanga’s words in March 2009 after the Lahore terror attack on the Sri Lankan side. A rocket launcher had missed the bus and a hand grenade tossed towards the vehicle failed to explode. Sanga was that close to the end.

Nine years on, during the Hong Kong T20 Blitz, Sanga spoke on how important it was for cricket to return to Pakistan. He expressed his satisfaction over the recent games being played in the country and emphasised on the importance of tight security not only for the cricketers but also for the fans.

Sanga and Sammy head next to UAE for the Pakistan Super League (PSL). The Eliminators will be played in Lahore and the final at Karachi.

Pakistan have embraced Sammy as their own. Sammy, on the other hand, has played a major role in bringing international cricketers to the terror-torn nation. Not only did he play the 2017 PSL final at Lahore, he also convinced other international cricketers about the tight security for the World XI tour in September 2017. His objective was clear: he had famously told ESPNCricinfo on how he and the members of World XI had accepted the fact that they were going to be a part of “something more important than just their selves.”

Caption: Darren Sammy with Peshawar Zalmi after winning PSL 2017 in Lahore (AFP)
“PSL is a tournament I have embraced,” said Sammy. “It feels good to play a small part in bringing cricket back to Pakistan. My players and me went there [Lahore] and won the cup. So it’s more pressure this year to defend. Hopefully I will be there, playing the PSL final at Karachi on March 25.”

Defending champions Peshawar Zalmi, led by Sammy, will take on the new franchise Multan Sultans that has Sanga, in the PSL 2018 opener on February 22 at Dubai.

Hasan Ali doubtful for initial PSL matches, Umaid Asif joins as cover

KARACHI: All-rounder Hasan Ali is doubtful for the first few matches of the upcoming Pakistan Super League due to an ankle injury he sustained during Pakistan’s tour of New Zealand.

An official of PSL confirmed that Hasan has yet to fully recover from the injury, and is likely to sit out the first three or four matches of Peshawar Zalmi.

The Zalmi management has included first-class cricketer Umaid Asif as cover for the injured bowler.

“Umaid Asif will join Peshawar Zalmi as cover for fast bowler Hasan Ali who is recovering from an ankle injury,” said a statement from the PSL secretariat.

Hasan Ali twisted his left ankle while playing football during a training session in New Zealand, which also forced him out of Pakistan’s deciding T20 international against the Kiwis.

In another shuffle for the tournament, Peshawar Zalmi have released West Indian batsman Evin Lewis, who had earlier withdrawn from the squad to play for his country in the World Cup qualifiers.

Riki Wessels from England has joined the Zalmi squad as Lewis’ replacement. He is the seventh foreign player in the defending champions’ lineup.

South African all-rounder Albie Morkel also recently withdrew from PSL 3 due to family commitments. Australian bowler John Hastings will now be an active member of the Quetta Gladiators squad from the start of the tournament.

Zalmi's 'strong outfit' ready to defend PSL title: Javed Afridi

KARACHI: Javed Afridi, the owner of PSL team Peshawar Zalmi is confident that his team will successfully defend the title by putting up a great show in the third edition of Pakistan Super League.

Talking to Geo.tv ahead of Zalmi’s departure to Dubai for the action packed PSL matches, Afridi said that Zalmi squad has a blend of talented youngsters and experienced players who can make Zalmi victorious, once again.

“I am pretty much satisfied by our preparations as a unit. In Mohammad Akram, Zaheer Abbas and Younis Khan, we have some of the most intelligent brains in the game. The squad is very strong as well. We have a proper mix of good batsmen, bowlers and all-rounders. I am confident of putting up a great show in this edition as well,” he said.

“PSL is something that unites our nation. We are looking forward to some thrilling matches in the competition this time around as well,” Afridi added.

Zalmi had made some changes from the team that won the 2nd edition of Pakistan Super League and the biggest name to move out of Zalmi’s clan is Shahid Afridi, but Javed feels that the squad has players who can fill the vacuum.

“Shahid, no doubt, is a match-winner on his day. His contributions towards Pakistan cricket and for Peshawar Zalmi are admirable. He was an integral part of our winning campaign last season,” he said about the former captain and flamboyant all-rounder who is now a part of Karachi Kings camp.

“The only constant is change. We have moved on and are a better side this season. We have players in our squad who can make up for the vacuum he has left and we are confident of defending our title,” said the owner of Peshawar Zalmi.

Talking about Zalmi’s squad, Afridi said that everyone in the team is a top professional and has the ability to win matches for the team which makes Peshawar Zalmi a strong outfit.

“The likes of Daren Sammy, Kamran Akmal, Mohammad Hafeez, Hasan Ali and Wahab Riaz are a pivotal part of our unit. The new signings Liam Dawson, Dwayne Smith, Hammad Azam and Saad Nasim have a lot of potential as well and can add to the team composition,” he said.

He was also full of praise for Zalmi’s captain Darren Sammy and said that his presence in Zalmi’s camp is a source of motivation for all his colleagues.

“Daren is one of the most inspirational players in world cricket right now. He is a brilliant player. His efforts in winning West Indies two World T20 titles are for everyone to see,” he said.

“He is someone a lot of youngsters look up to in his day and age. His presence in the dressing room is a source of great motivation for his colleagues. There is never a dull moment when he is around,” Afridi mentioned.

Talking about Hasan Ali who was picked as an emerging talent by Peshawar Zalmi in 2016 and now has become the top bowler, the franchise owner said that Hassan’s transformation to a top bowler in the span of just 14 months is commendable.

“Hasan Ali is a prime example of talent transforming itself into a world beater and has the potential of achieving greater things in life. He has a big role to play for us in the upcoming edition. Other than that, we have Mohammad Ashgar, who is a fine young talent and made his name last time around,” he highlighted.

Replying to a query, Afridi said that he is hopeful that foreign-based players of Zalmi will surely visit Pakistan if his team qualifies for the knock-out stage. He, once again, reiterated his request to honor players who visited Pakistan last year for PSL 2 final with a national honor.

Have to work really hard to lift the trophy again: Mohammad Hafeez

"I have always believed that whatever you have done — good or bad — has happened and we should not live in the past," Hafeez said while speaking to DawnNews. "Yes we were champions, but we have to work really hard to maintain it."

"The core of the team is the same and youngsters that have joined in bring a lot of flare with them," he added.

"We'll play selfless cricket, we'll play fearless cricket and we hope we can make our fans proud this year. We'll try and do our absolute best [to win]," Lahore Qalandars skipper Brendam McCullum said, earlier on Saturday about his team's strategy.

Sammy keen to lift PSL trophy again

LAHORE: Peshawar Zalmi captain Darren Sammy cannot wait for his team to repeat last year’s triumph and lift the Pakistan Super League (PSL) trophy again, this time in Karachi.

In a video interview ahead of the third edition of PSL, the former Windies skipper hailed the revival of international cricket in Pakistan and looked back on his memories of last year’s PSL.

“We got to see brilliant scenes at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore, everyone was carrying the Zalmi flag,” Sammy recalled, as he expressed his gratitude to the Pakistani crowd. “It’s time for me to return their love. We lifted the trophy in Lahore last year, we will lift it again in Karachi on March 25.” Sammy, a crowd favourite, promised a bigger celebration this time around. “Pakistanis love me, and I love them back,” he said. The all-rounder said he has always emphasised that international cricket should return to Pakistan. “Dawid Malan, Marlon Samuels and Chris Jordan also came to Pakistan [last year]. Malan was then selected in the England team and scored a century in the Ashes.” Defending champions Peshawar Zalmi play debutants Multan Sultans in the opening match of PSL 3 on February 22 in Dubai.

Meanwhile, PSL’s defending champions Peshawar Zalmi have bolstered their coaching staff just days before the third edition of the Twenty20 tournament kicks off in Dubai.

Head coach M Akram will now have the assistance of legendary off-spinner Saqlain Mushtaq in the dugout as a spin bowling consultant, the franchise said on Saturday. Mushtaq, who famously invented the Doosra delivery, will link up with the Zalmi in Dubai on Sunday.

The 41-year-old has previously had coaching stints with the England national team but has never been employed by the Pakistan Cricket Board.
