Former Pakistan captain and famous commentator Ramiz Raja has asked the team management to drop veteran right-handed batsman Azhar Ali from the Test team.

The 33-year-old is going through a horrid time with the bat in the ongoing three-match series against South Africa, where he has managed to score just 44 runs in five innings with scores of 36, 0, 2, 6 and 0.

Raja, who is in South Africa to cover the series as a commentator, on his official Youtube channel, criticised Azhar, who according to him is not suited to represent Pakistan in the longest format of the game.

“There is a big question mark over Azhar [Ali]’s place in the team,” said Raja. “A part from that first innings during the first Test where he scored 30 odd runs, he just never looked in control, to be honest. He can neither play the short ball nor did he look comfortable against the deliveries which are moving.”

He added: “With such performances in the series, he is only holding his place in the playing eleven because he has the experience of playing 70 odd Test matches. But I believe, sometimes you have to take strong decisions for the betterment of the team. Because all of these players are here to play and contribute in the team’s winning cause. We have to field the best possible combination which can help the team in achieving the ultimate objective. This is a team sport and only deserving players should be a part of final eleven. It shouldn’t matter how many Test matches you’ve played if you are not contributing to team’s cause.”

The 56-year-old also went on to criticise the team management’s decision to drop leg-spinner Yasir Shah from the third Test lineup, by saying: “I think it was a wrong decision by the team management to drop a match-winner like Yasir [Shah]. How can you drop someone who is the quickest to 200 wickets on a pitch which will assist him? I think he was treated unfairly. He was dropped because the management was worried about the team’s batting woes. It shows that the think tank is not thinking clearly because Test cricket is a game of specialists.”

Fact is that our senior batsmen have been struggling ever since the previous senior duo retired and this duo has failed miserably.. I am sure they have been avging late 20s early 30s since their retirement and there is absolutely no point in keeping seniors just for the sake of seniority. Azhar has been struggling in UAE where he was king.. He was always about temperament but lately he has most patience and hasn't been able to keep his concentration. I would say his real age is showing up at this point...

Asad has been raking in failures as well. Ducks and pressure less innings.... this is why we are failing in tests.. Seniors are not stepping up and juniors are establishing themselves and mind you they have been doing better and on top of it all we have a captain who has clearly been feeling the pressure.

Let's wait for the conclusion of this test before suggesting dropping anyone but Asad is the first on the line to be dropped right now right behind Sarfraz. I'd stick with Azhar for longer. It is not like youngsters like Fakhar and Imam are greatly out performing the seniors.

I’d keep him, infact I’d only bring in Usman Salahuddin to the squad and that’s it really, spinners we have Bilal Asif, Kashif Bhatti and Asghar but Irfan Jailor looks good also let’s keep eyes on any new spinner in PSL.

I’d back this team because in patches they’ve all done something it’s just consistency needs to be improved and that can only happen if they stay together as a unit besides that when they will face any other attack they will find it easy to play if you keep swapping players you are back at square one, lots of hard work is required, team is still decent in my looking.

Errm.....as bad as Imam is yes he is outperforming him. A 12 year old would perform Azhar these days.

I don’t know why he has so much support on this forum. Complete failure.

Imam currently outperforming Azhar who is in the worst form of his career is hardly convincing.

I would be inclined to drop both (call it 'giving them a rest' for the media). And then try two best middle order batsmen we have in the next UAE series. Lets get some fresh legs.

Gone are the days when he was better than Shafiq, now Shafiq has bwtter records than him. Though Asad isn't performing like we want from him yet he's slightly better than Azhar. He, atleast, performs in one innings of the match.

Exactly, they should be given some rest to catch their breath. Let them think that they're on the verge of there career's end.

So Imam, Shafiq, Masood, Babar all have higher scores than Azhar has runs in the series.

    Even Sarfaraz has outperformed him

That’s what I mean - if Azhar is even worse than Imam, why do you want him in the team.

What’s worse for Azhar is that this has also probably scarred him. He’s a sitting duck for short deliveries now and has been completely exposed in that regard.

Fast bowlers around the world will be queuing up to bowl to him

Not surprising that such batsmen play for Pakistan keeping in mind their batting culture historically.

Azhar Ali's performance has been unacceptable. Even worse than Asad Shafiq's.

I have a soft corner for Azhar because of everything he has done for Pakistan cricket in the last decade, which is why I'm not so vocal against him.

They should both be dropped. But you can’t keep just justifying his performances with “oh but Asad, oh but sarfraz, oh but Imam”. As
Bad as those 3 have been, they’ve done something in this series. Azhar had a stinkingly poor series and pretty much a poor last 12 months.

Maybe he can come back, but he should be dropped for a while now.

Asad is only slightly behind him in terms of poor performance. I don’t like players who just play well in meaningless innings.

He played a blinder in the last match but it was only because the match was all but lost. Looks like he’s doing the same again. It would have been much better if he played innings of that calibre in the first innings.

This is a weak excuse. How bad can the replacement be? Even a debutant couldn’t have as bad a series as Azhar has had if he tried!

And the replacement may learn something in the process.

Not saying azhar had a great series. He’s allowed a bad patch, if he continues to perform badly then drop him.

A bad patch is one or two series. His average across the last 5 series is 25. Take away the century in a losing cause against NZ and it’s even worse.

Worse still, this is when you expected him to rise up after the retirements of Younis and Misbah. The team needed him to step up at this point and he hasn’t in the slightest.

Delve even deeper and his second innings record is disgraceful. We have lost so many matches recently in the 4th innings and even the ones we won (against Ireland and England) it was despite his failures in the second innings. Others stood up.

So physically and mentally he has been a massive burden on the team since the retirements. How can this not equate to him being dropped. How much evidence do you need.

What is the point of this “seniority” and “experience”?

The problem with Azhar is his dismissal patterns, in England and Ireland bowled, caught behind and LBW, here beaten by bounce and pace, LBW and Caught behind, not good sign at all.

He played for Somerset last season and is returning again this summer. No one has really stepped up after the retirement of younis/Misbah, it was the perfect opportunity for azhar to cement his place. Azhar is very close to being dropped. He’s not finished yet though. I have faith in him.

What has playing for Somerset got to do with the price of bread?

No one has yes, but no one is as experienced as him either. Who did you want to step up? Most of them are all either newcomers or returning to the side. And you can’t compare a leading batsman with the keeper in the side either. Although Sarfraz is on thin ice too.

Obviously Asad is the only comparison - and he has done ever so slightly better, but I’m not praising him either.
