PCB expresses regret over Sarfraz's remarks in Durban ODI

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) expressed its regret over the uncalled-for remarks issued by the skipper Sarfraz Ahmed during the second One-day International against South Africa in Durban, in a statement released on Wednesday.

“The PCB expresses regret over the remark made by their captain Sarfaraz Ahmed and picked up by the stump mic during the second ODI against South Africa in Durban," it said, "the PCB neither endorses nor supports any comments that have the potential to cause offence, and firmly reiterates their zero-tolerance approach towards racist comments made; in whatever context.”

The board said that the incident has also highlighted the importance and significance of player education and training at all levels.

The PCB vows to improve their player education programmes to ensure these types of incidents do not happen again.

The board said that Sarfaraz is one of the most respected cricketers in the world. However, captaining Pakistan is a massive honour and any hurtful remarks by any cricketer, let alone the captain, are not acceptable to the PCB.

“The PCB is confident that this incident will not affect the series, which has been played in great spirit with some excellent performances from both side. The PCB is also hopeful that the crowds will continue to turn up in big numbers for the remaining matches to support cricket,” the statement concluded.

In the previous game, you could sense no bowler was even looking back at him when he was blabbering. Why get angry in public at your own players? That too when you're own batting form is pathetic and beyond garbage.

I feel today's match won't help. You can see the players are more relaxed and open with their captain who is implementing the bowler's fields and plans which has yielded results.. this will lower respect for sarfraz in the team and this is a serious problem as sarfraz as a captain has lost the respect and trust of his players.. The players won't be motivated to give a hundred percent. Its all well and good to say the flag should be motivation enough but this is a job as well and they will loose motivation to give a 100% when their captain, who has failed in his own job, is yelling at you.

if malik continues to give bowlers their space and provides them with confidence and not yell at them then the moment sarfraz will come to the dressing room the entire team will be against him and this will make his world cup a disaster...

Sarfraz should sit at home and retrospect at what has gone wrong and is going wrong.. Not about this incident but about his captaincy tenure.. Why players are not interested in even talking to him? How can he get a 100% without yelling at them? If he doesn't want to become a disgraced captain then he needs to spend this time and rework and revamp his strategy..

At this point. Sarfraz should look to make a few changes in his approach.

The PCB has issued the following statement after the International Cricket Council today suspended Pakistan cricket team captain Sarfaraz Ahmed for four matches.

“The PCB notes the ICC decision on Sarfaraz Ahmed with its utmost disappointment. PCB had anticipated that the matter had been resolved amicably between the two players and the two Boards following Sarafraz Ahmed’s public apologies which were accepted by the player, the Board and South Africa cricket team.

“The PCB will be pursuing this matter at the ICC forums with the objective to bring reforms to the Code, promoting amicable resolutions to issues as opposed to penalties. Having said that, the PCB reiterates its zero-tolerance approach towards racist comments and behavior.

“In consultation with Sarfaraz, it has been decided that he will return to Pakistan immediately. Shoaib Malik will captain the team for the remaining ODIs and T20 internationals of the series, while Mohammad Rizwan has been included in the T20I side.”

Did you notice that Sarfaraz was not there when all players were shaking hands after the match. He was spotted on the balcony at the start of Pakistan innings but not after that.

 

The punishment is to harsh...one ODI should be enough. Out from four games is mind boggling.

 

Sarfraz needs to learn how to keep his mouth shut at times. He's always talking behind the stumps. He has ago at every fielder and every bowler after every ball. The more you talk the more likely you are to screw up and that's what happened here.

Don't know. I guess PCB don't want any situation... Malik will lead the series.... This has been so hushed hushed that there is barely any news on it apart from PCB making ridiculous statements

 

Let me provide a different perspective here.

I know you guys are all crapping on PCB for putting out this message and perhaps it's reasonable given that we already got ourselves into hot water and are not suffering that much as a result of it.

However, given PCB's history with the ICC and usually being slighted in one way or another, PCB probably feels this as another F U from the ICC as a way to screw them over. The statement is not incorrect - the two boards had tried to get ahead of this and solve the problem, with the public apology and the meeting of Sarfraz and Andile. The matter should've been considered closed then, given that Faf had also put out his statement.

The four match ban, if it was going to be handed, should've been within 1-2 days of the incident, rather than after an ODI had already been played. I did think it was odd that after everything had seemed closed, ICC put out the ban, without much communication given that we didn't find out until toss time (whether that's PCB's incompetence or what, I don't know and I don't think is relevant here).

I personally don't think there's anything wrong with PCB's statement and it shouldn't really affect the relationship between the boards. All they're saying is - Bro, I thought you were letting us handle this between ourselves, and now you come in to show some kind of authority, double-you tee eff.

I can see how the argument can be made that perhaps ICC handed out the ban to show that it wasn't taking the incident lightly and wasn't just going to let it go, rather than risk being called out for being supporters of racism or some shit like that. But that's not what people are mentioning here and would rather just crap on PCB for everything rather than at least consider a different perspective.

Something Malik raised during the post-match interview might also be relevant to this. Malik was only informed on the match day that he would captain, meaning that the team was not aware of the ban till hours before the game.

PCB probably felt hard done by, banning the captain a few hours before the match when they had 2-3 days.

The timing of the ban does raise a few question marks...

The reality is that such racist language/taunts are so common and nonchalantly used in Pakistan that PCB/Sarfraz still couldn't comprehend the gravity of the situation after getting caught. Since the PCB itself didn't take any action and Sarfraz was liking tweets spinning his actions as some wonderful thing he had done, I am glad that the ICC stepped in and did something. Compare this to how other boards quickly take control, jump into action when things involve their players and don't wait around for the ICC to do their job.

Lol, with the way PCB treat T20s I wouldn’t have been suprised if this was his own decision.

 

1. It's not stupid to swear at someone in Urdu. Players do it all the time, especially because it can be more nerve racking to not know what one is saying about you. You might disagree, but it's not objectively stupid. Additionally, Sarfraz wasn't swearing. He was just bantering.

2. Yes, it was stupid to use racist overtones, but like we have discussed, this is way Pakistanis speak and its a part of culture to just refer to people by their color. My parents do it all the time - "woh chapti cashier bari badtameez thi", etc. I hear this in Pakistan all the time. While not ok, it is understandable.
