Amla and Azhar would grind the opposition down so need someone like Warner, Sharjeel or Fakhar to partner Azhar./ Amla can be selected in place of Azhar though!

    Great lineup.
If a spin all-rounder is required, than it will be a toss up between Shadab, Ali, Ashwin and Shakib.

Shadab is the best amongst them although inexperienced but he is equally good with bat and ball. Shahid Afridi's more responsible version I would say. Bear in mind, Afridi was very effective in his stop start test career!!

These days you just can not go on blocking forever in test cricket. You have to get runs against your name too cus most modern batsmen dont have techniques of Rahul Dravid or Amla or Pujara!!

    He has great potential indeed.
There could be two ways to pick him/someone else.
Either go for experience/record or go for potential.

Nice XI, may i suggest some changes?
Malik is very good by Pakistani standards but sadly not up to world XI level. Its also true for Sarfaraz.

Pick DuPlasis, Maxwell or Miller in place of Malik, Dhoni or Bairstow or Buttler as WK.
Also, this team has Malik as a possible sixth bowler when it's fifth bowler is Stokes? an all-rounder.

6th bowler is always needed in an odi. Your top 5 bowlers one or two of them are not going to bowl their full quota and you will need a 6th bowler to chip in with a few overs! This is the reason why Pakistan has always been a better team than india cus we take care of our bowling more than our batting!!

For a batting all-rounder, i would prefer Maxwell or Duminy or even Ali over Malik anyday, simply because malik doesnt even bowl 5 overs in a match these days.

Malik is much more experienced out of these guys and has done well in last so many years. All we need from Malik with the ball is 2-3-4 overs. Max we need him as a bowler 5 overs which he can do comfortably./ And he wont be required to bowl 5 overs everytime. He would usually be required to bowl 3 overs in that 30-35 over time in odis.

You mean SINCE 1980 , right?
Because most of them started playing after 1980.

I would replace Aamir Sohail with Hanif Mohammed for tough pitches and Majid Khan for others.

Might select Rashid Latif over Moin.

Waqar was JUST as fast as Shoaib, if not more. So i will pick another spinner when the pitch is spinning, like Ajmal/Mushtaq Ahmed.
Or a "swinger", like Fazal Mahmood or Mohammed Asif.

Aamir Sohail is my 2nd/3rd spinner thats why he is always preferred by me as opening partner to Saeed Anwar. You need one of your batsman to bowl some part time spin too for you to be successful in all 3 formats. You need your part time bowler to bowl 3 overs in the middle phase just like Hafeez and Malik do for us. Aamir Sohail is therefore preferred.

That is the SAME guy who was blasted for 28 runs in an over by Jiyasuriya? LOL

And besides, if 5 bowlers can't get the job done, a part timer won't either.
Remember, just who those 5 bowlers are:
Imran:362 wickets in tests, 190 odd in ODIs
Wasim:414 in tests and 502 in ODIs
Waqar: 373 in Tests and 419 in ODIs
Saqlain: 288 in ODIs and 170-180 odd in Tests.
Fazal mahmood: 150 odd wickets with lots of fifers and ten fors.
Or Asif: 100 odd test wickets with abality to move the ball both ways and reverse it as well.

With those at your disposal, what the hell you would need a part time spinner for?
Not to mention the fact that Miandad used to bowl spin quite alot in his early days.

One more thing, this was a TEST xi. Since when does the tests have a "middle period"?

Tests mein bhi jab new ball lene wale hote hein us waqt purane ball se 3-4 overs karane ke liye part time bowler ki zaroorat parti hai aur baki saare bowlers fast bowlers hein sirf Saqlain eik spinner hai Saqlain ki fingers ko rest karane ke liye Aamir Sohail ka hona zaroori hai otherwise he would bowl non stop and will also be worked out if he bowls too many overs!!

Aamir Sohail was a very under rated bowler in my opinion and he was the partnership breaker. When guys like Aravinda and Ranatunga used to get in like a glue and they wont get out easily then you will call Aamir Sohail to break their partnership and he was so often successful,. He won a test against South Africa as a Captain in South Africa without Wasim and Waqar before injured Rashid Latif came back to lead the team to defeat!!

92 World Cup ke final mein pure 10 over karaye the Aamir Sohail ne for 49 runs, very good considering he played the role of 5th bowler in the team although he is supposed to be the 6th bowler in an odi team!

Sahara Cup final 96 or 98 when Aamir Sohail was at his peak: Saqlain, Mushtaq Ahmed and Aamir Sohail spun india in their spin web! All 3 spinners put india in such a hole that they could not recover. Initially, it was Saqlain and Aamir Sohail that were bowling, then Mushie arrived and benefited from the pressure of drying up runs brought by Saqi and Sohail!!

@mohsin88ali if Aamir Sohail is not selected, Saqlain would be the sole spinner and then he would have to over bowl which would mean that batsmen would work him out plus there should be a part time spinner in the team to give his fingers a little bit of rest from long spells and Sohail would share the burden of Saqi!!

Aamir Sohail will be required to do the job of Hafeez. Just like we play Hafeez so that he can be our 2nd or 3rd spinner in addition to Ajmal/ Yasir Shah, Rehman / Zulfiqar Babar etc, similar role would be assigned to Aamir Sohail.

You keep forgetting that this team has Miandad who used to bowl quite a lot in his early days, ergo wc75. You have Younus as well, the two of them can give Saqi/Mushi 5-7 over rest.

Nice XI, may i suggest some changes?
A one day side can do without a proper opener but for a while, Test cricket CAN'T.

Drop Ranatunga and add Attapatu at the top. Now eveyone bats at their favorite position.

    Jiyasuriya
    Attapatu
    Sangakara
    Jiyawardene
    Arvinda de silva
    Angelo Matthews
    Kaluwitherna/Parsanna Jiyawardene
    Chamina Vaas
    Rangna Herath
    Muttah Murlithern
Malinga never played much tests so i am not sure about including him. Any suggestions?

    Jiyasuriya
    Jiyawardene
    Sangakara
    Arvinda
    Matthews
    Ranatunga/someone else
    Thisara Prera
    Ajanta mendis

Ranatunga was their World Cup winning captain! Him and Aravinda were sensational in 96 WC triumph and they batted like a glue, tough to dismiss. If you want to include Attapatu, Jayawardene would miss out in my opinion. I therefore preferred Jayawardene over Attapatu. Unfortunately, there is not much choice in fast bowling. Other options would be Nuwan Zoysa, Wickremasinghe etc!
