Sharjeel Khan and Khalid Latif provisionally suspended by PCB

    i.jpg

The Pakistan Cricket Board have today provisionally suspended two players under its Anti-Corruption Code as part of an ongoing investigation into an international syndicate which is believed to be attempting to corrupt the Pakistan Super League which started in Dubai yesterday.

Sharjeel Khan and Khalid Latif have been suspended and the rigorous and wide-ranging investigation by the PCB supported by the ICC will continue as part of collective efforts to protect the integrity of the sport.

Najam Sethi, Chairman of the PSL said: “It would not be appropriate to comment on the specifics of the case, however this investigation is a clear demonstration of our determination to drive corruption out of our sport. We will not tolerate any form of corrupt activity and as this investigation proceeds we will not hesitate to take further decisive action as appropriate.

“The investigation of the PCB Anti-Corruption Unit backed by the ICC ACU has been effective in dealing with this case to date and we will continue to work in the closest collaboration as the investigation proceeds. We are all absolutely committed to relentlessly pursuing anyone who would seek to damage the integrity of our sport.”

Chairman PCB, Mian Shaharyar M. Khan said, “I must remind all players of their responsibilities in the fight against corruption. They must understand that if they even think they may have been the subject of a suspicious approach, it is their obligation under the PCB Anti-Corruption Code to report it to an appropriate anti-corruption official as a matter of urgency.”

“Under no circumstances will the PCB condone actions of a few individuals to bring disrepute to the game of cricket or taint the image of Pakistan.”

The PCB and the ICC will not make any further comment in respect of ongoing investigation.

Whenever our cricket seems to be going slightly up hill, we get hit by controversy.

The worst part is our players still don't learn. Idiots .

I'd be devastated if Irfan was involved but it looks like the they were only questioning him and he's been cleared...

It looks like Sethi is trying to look tough at the expense of Pakistani player's reputations. He doesn't seem to understand that he is permanently tainting players by association regardless of guilt.

Yes that's the latest news. I'm not sure about Sethi being unnecessarily tough. I'm sure atleast Sharjeel & Latif must have done something bad. It would be crazy to run the rep of the league and lose someone like Sharjeel who was doing well for Pakistan, without good reason...

The whole handling of the situation by Najam Sethi has been horrible, he needs to understand he is the Chairman of PCB not some journalist who needs to sell rumors.

He's acting like Trump, doing everything on Twitter. Flexing his power at the expense of the PSL reptation. There is a reason the IPL cover up their corruption and fixing. There is a reason the Australian Cricket board quietly warned Mark Waugh and Shane Warne.

I'm not saying we should hide it, we need to get any fixers out of the system but tainting the name of so many players just because they are being questioned is pretty gormless.

This is what I mean. You've already decided Sharjeel and Khalid Latif are guilty. They might be or they might just have hung around with the wrong people.

Sohail Khan, the father of Sharjeel Khan said on Saturday that his son has said he has done nothing wrong.

Speaking to the media, Sohail Khan stressed everything regarding his son was at this point speculations, suspicion and doubt.

Sohail Khan further said the matter was being investigated by the ICC and PCB, adding that he can complete confidence in these governing bodies.

On Friday, the Pakistan Super League (PSL) was hit by a corruption scandal as the PCB provisionally suspended two players, Khalid Latif and Sharjeel Khan for being suspected to be linked with an international syndicate.

In a series of Tweets on Saturday, PSL chairman Najam Sethi said the anti-corruption unit of the PCB had initiaed an inquiry and questioned Mohammad Irfan, however, the left arm pacer did not face immediate suspension.

Shahzaib Hasan and Zulfiqar Babar have also been questioned and they will continue to play in PSL, Sethi added.

I agree with @Mercenary . Sethi is just boosting his reputation at the expense of players who might not even be guilty.

A good example of how to handle these situations was given by Cricket South Africa just months ago. They discovered some players may have been involved in fixing and failing to report it. They announced an investigation was ongoing and only revealed the names when they were found guilty and charged. Had they been found innocent the names would never have been released and the names wouldn't have been unnecessarily dragged through mud.

A good investigation will question as many players as possible. Under Sethi everyone's name will end up in the mud. They haven't named any foreign players yet. Will be interesting to see if they do, if Sethi does that it could be the end of the PSL.

Exactly. Plus he will have hurt Sharjeel's chances to play in other T20 leagues. He would have been a big signing. That's assuming Sharjeel is innocent. I'm starting to think this whole thing is either a way to scare the Pakistan players or just a PSL is clean publicity stunt which is backfiring.

LAHORE (Dunya News) - Startling revelations continue to emerge from second installment of scandal-stricken Pakistan Super League (PSL).

According to latest information obtained by Dunya News, a bookie offered Rs 2 million to left-handed opening batsman Sharjeel Khan for two dot balls. He was caught red-handed by PCB’s security in-charge.

Moreover, Nasir Jamshed had sent a message to Islamabad United batsman Khalid Latif through Whatsapp urging him to meet Yousaf. Following this development, Yousaf telephoned Khaid Latif on February 8.

A photo has also gone viral on social media displaying Sharjeel Khan and Khaid Latif having dinner with a suspicious person.

Khaid Latif told officials of Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) that suspicious person was a Pakistani. Upon which officials asked that why did not he report to them about the meeting?

Several other players including Shahzeb Hassan, Nasir Jamshed and Zulfiqar Babar were also questioned by the authorities.

A scandal is not a scandal without an input from Sarfraz Nawaz

Sarfraz Nawaz livid with PSL match-fixing row

Karachi: Former fast bowler Sarfraz Nawaz has lashed out at the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) after cricketers Sharjeel Khan and Khalid Latif were found involved in a fresh match-fixing scandal. Blaming the PCB for the same, the 68-year-old insisted that such kind of incidents could not be avoided in Pakistan cricket until the board keeps the tainted players around. “Such kinds of incidents cannot be avoided in Pakistan cricket because the PCB loves to keep tainted players around,” the Dawn quoted Nawaz as saying. “Tainted persons like Wasim Akram, Dean Jones, Moin Khan, Shoaib Malik, Inzamam-ul-Haq, Basit Ali and many others are still working with the PCB in different capacities despite having tainted past and many of them had even been penalised by the judicial commission of Justice Malik Qayyum,” he added.

Earlier, the PCB had suspended Sharjeel and Khalid under its Anti-Corruption Code as part of an ongoing investigation into an international syndicate which is believed to be attempting to corrupt the Pakistan Super League (PSL) being played in Dubai. Both Sharjeel and Latif play for defending champions Islamabad United in the fledgling PSL, the second season of which began in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Thursday.

The former pacer alleged that not only the first match of this year’s tournament between Islamabad United and Peshawar Zalmi was fixed, but also the second one between Lahore Qalandars and Quetta Gladiators. Nawaz further went on to say that these players get the full support of their coaches as well as other officials for getting involved in spot-fixing.

Alleging that PSL chairman Najam Sethi had also been involved in many corrupt activities, Nawaz insisted that although the PCB wanted to conceal this scandal like many other previous scandals, however the pressure put in by the International Cricket Council (ICC) played a vital role in bringing it into public. Sharjeel, who made his Test debut against Australia in Sydney last month, has played 25 ODIs and 15 T20s. Latif has represented Pakistan in five ODIs and 13 T20s.

PSL corruption: What we know so far

Pakistan cricket was rocked this week after a corruption scandal involving Islamabad United’s batsmen Sharjeel Khan and Khalid Latif, among others, came to the fore.

The duo was immediately suspended while investigations are currently under way for other players.

Following the incident, the Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU) said in a statement on Saturday that it is continuing with inquiries on the matter.

“We are aiming to root out corrupt practices and to safeguard and protect the integrity of the PSL,” said the statement.

The board also said that left-arm pacer Mohammad Irfan, opening batsman Shahzaib Hasan, and left-arm spinner Zulfiqar Babar were questioned, but they weren’t suspended.

“As a part of the investigations Mohammad Irfan was also questioned. He does not face any immediate suspension. PCB’s ACU has also questioned Shahzaib Hasan and Zulfiqar Babar. They will continue to play the PSL.”

The Express Tribune has compiled a list of facts that we know so far regarding the corruption allegations:.

      a. Islamabad United duo Sharjeel Khan and Khalid Latif have been provisionally suspended as part of an undergoing investigation against corruption. The accused met a bookie in the hotel’s lobby which was noted by the authorities.

      b. The duo accepted that they met the bookie, but denied any corruption charges. Their mobile phones were taken by the officials for further investigation as they were both send back to Pakistan from the United Arab Emirates.

      c. The bookies gave specified coloured bat grips so that the batsmen could be identified by gamblers during matches. They also offered Rs500,000 to players.

      d. Sharjeel and Latif’s central contracts are also suspended.

      e. Irfan’s name also came up in the investigation. He handed over his phone to the officials for further investigation. Meanwhile, Islamabad United reportedly removed him from the squad.

      f. PSL chairman Najam Sethi sent out three tweets on the matter, saying that Irfan, Shahzaib Hasan, Zulfiqar Babar were all questioned and the investigation will proceed further. But said the trio have not been suspended.

      g. Islamabad United included Irfan for the second match of the tournament.

Have friendship with suspended cricketer Sharjil Khan, not a bookie: Sanaullah
      [IMG]

DUBAI – Sanaullah, an alleged bookie seen in a picture with Sharjil Khan and Khalid Latif, who were suspended on spot-fixing charges, on Saturday took to media stating, “I am not a bookie but a friend of the players”.

Talking to a private news channel, Sanaullah said that he has friendship with Sharjil Khan before starting of his cricket career, adding that he ran a business in Dubai and just invited them for having a meal together.

Sanaulla who hails from Dera Ghazi Khan also confirmed his presence in the picture, adding that he has friendship with many other players.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) had been provisionally suspended Islamabad United players Sharjeel Khan and Khalid Latif for their alleged involvement in spot-fixing in the ongoing second edition of Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2017 in Dubai.

DUBAI: Pakistan Super League (PSL) chairman Najam Sethi said an inquiry into Sharjeel Khan and Khalif Laitf being linked to an international syndicate trying to corrupt Pakistan’s T20 league will take 10-15 days.

“The matter will move forward after the inquiry is complete,” Sethi said.

According to Sethi, three other players (Mohammad Irfan, Shahzaib Hasan and Zulfiqar Babar) were questioned and had been cleared.

“Moving forward other players should not be worried. If anyone has been approached by a bookie they should inform us immediately, otherwise, from our end, normal routine vigilance will continue," Sethi added.
