At least 137 people have been killed and hundreds more injured in explosions at churches and hotels in Sri Lanka, police and hospital sources say.

At least six explosions have been reported. Three churches in Kochchikade, Negombo and Batticaloa were targeted during Easter services.

The Shangri La, Cinnamon Grand and Kingsbury hotels, all in Colombo, were also hit.

Easter Sunday is one of the major feasts in the Christian calendar.

Images on social media showed the inside of one of the churches - St Sebastian's in Negombo - with a shattered ceiling and blood on the pews.

Among those killed in Colombo were at least nine foreign nationals, hospital sources told the BBC.

Reuters quoted a police source as saying more than 50 people died in Negombo, while hospital sources in Batticaloa said at least 27 people had died there.

A hotel official at the Cinnamon Grand, near the prime minister's official residence, told AFP the explosion there had ripped through a restaurant, killing at least one person.

    'Horrible scenes'
President Maithripala Sirisena has issued a statement calling for people to remain calm and support the authorities in their investigations.

PM Ranil Wickremesinghe is chairing an emergency meeting. He said: "I strongly condemn the cowardly attacks on our people today. I call upon all Sri Lankans during this tragic time to remain united and strong."

This is really, really terrible - and can spark large-scale sectarian violence once again.

This is what I was expecting that what if some group like ISIS, who is supported by Intl powers like US claim the responsibility and here we go.

I know some will label this as conspiracy theory, but the way I see it is all staged to instigate hate and violence in between Muslims and Christians, question is who is beneficiary from this?

Responsibility of this barbaric attack was accepted by ISIS, so I am not sure what Tamils have to do here.

You do realize tamils are an ethnic group and Christians are a religious group and a significant % of tamils are Christians?

the Previous civil war was an ethnic conflict between tamils and sinhalese.

Sounds like British Mosques are Jihadi central

    https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-48035043

One of the attackers behind the Easter Sunday bombings in Sri Lanka once studied in the UK, officials say, as further details on the bombers emerge.

He visited south-east England in 2006-7 to study but did not complete a full university degree, a senior Whitehall official told the BBC.

A Whitehall official confirmed the name of the bomber who had visited the UK as Abdul Latif Jamil Mohammed.

The announcement that most of the attackers were "well educated" and "middle class" is not as surprising as it sounds.

Although poverty and lack of opportunities have steered many down a path to terrorism, there are also numerous examples of individuals abandoning a relatively comfortable lifestyle for a violent cause.

Ziad Jarrah, one of the 9/11 attackers who hijacked United Airlines flight 93, came from a privileged Lebanese family. More recently, there have been cases of British jihadists who have worked for the NHS, including doctors.

The late IS executioner Mohammed Emwazi, aka "Jihadi John", attended the University of Westminster in London. And the original co-founder of al-Qaeda, Osama Bin Laden, chose to leave behind a luxurious life in Jeddah to go and fight the Soviets in Afghanistan during the 1980s.

Colombo, Sri Lanka (CNN)One of the Sri Lanka suicide bombers was previously arrested by police and then released, a senior government official told CNN Thursday.

Ilham Ahmed Ibrahim -- one of two sons of a spice tycoon who blew themselves up in Sunday's attacks -- detonated a device at the Cinnamon Grand hotel in Colombo, the official told CNN.
"It was the suicide bomber of the Cinnamon Grand bomb attack who was released earlier," the official said.
Ilham Ahmed Ibrahim and his brother Imsath Ahmed Ibrahim were previously identified as two of the suicide bombers in Sunday's attacks, which left at least 359 people dead across the country.

Police have confirmed to CNN that they are holding the brothers' father, Mohamed Yusuf Ibrahim, a wealthy spice trader, on suspicion of aiding and abetting his sons.
Police spokesman Ruwan Gunasekera said the elder Ibrahim was in custody, as were all other members of the Ibrahim family known to police.

    Fake News!

SL muslims are going to get their ass kicked now, thanks to this clown.

    https://www.nytimes.com/2019/04/25/...tion=click&module=Top Stories&pgtype=Homepage

KATTANKUDY, Sri Lanka — Zaharan Hashim, a radical Muslim preacher accused of masterminding the Easter Sunday attacks on churches and hotels in Sri Lanka, never hid his hatred.

He railed against a local performance in which Muslim girls dared to dance. When a Muslim politician held a 50th birthday party, he raged about how Western infidel traditions were poisoning his hometown, Kattankudy.

There were, Mr. Zaharan said in one of his online sermons, three types of people: Muslims, those who had reached an accord with Muslims, and “people who need to be killed.”

Idolaters, he added, “need to be slaughtered wherever you see them.”

Mr. Zaharan has been described by Sri Lankan officials as having founded an obscure group with inchoate aims: a defacement of a Buddha statue, a diatribe against Sufi mystics.

But in his hometown, and later in the online world of radical Islam where his sermons were popular with a segment of Sri Lankan youth, it was clear for years that Mr. Zaharan’s hateful cadences were designed to lure a new generation of militants.

“He was influential, very attractive, very smart in his speeches, even though what he was saying about jihad was crazy,” said Marzook Ahamed Lebbe, a former Kattankudy politician and member of a local Islamic federation. “We all underestimated him. We never thought he would do what he said.”

Surely you could quote the source.

Kerala muslims are going to be big a problem. Good thing is they don't breed like rabbits. I think the godhra incident is keeping radical muslims in india in check.

are you crazy, incidents like godhra, gujrat, makes muslims radical, it doesnt keep them 'in check'. This RSS mentality is radicalizing india and for no reason you are pushing your muslim population towards radicalization.
People who are happy with the current hate mongering by the state of india will see the results in next 5 years. We radicalized our people in FATA by getting them mixed up in an unnecessary war and we had found ourselves in a turmoil after 5 years.

meanwhile source is below, but i agree it is just a 'top military official' source and report by the hindu so they must be trying to spice things up.

    https://www.thehindu.com/news/inter...-says-top-military-source/article26959549.ece

on the whole sri lankan administration have not blamed any country, organisation, and accepted the failure of its security officials, apologized to the country, and we saw some resignations. i dont know how countries like new zealand and sri lanka handle the situation way way,,, way better than pakistan and india.

It doesn't work like this, nobody provides any facts. All a group has to do to claim responsibility, which they have done.

Of course, India was involved in this attack, because they aided and trained attackers.

Yup, the jihadi culture is beginning to take root among south indian muslims. they have been a problem in the past, but quietened down after Godhra.
