Taufeeq Umar as keeper? Maybe we should keep him as a long term keeper?

Now that Adnan is injured, lets keep Taufeeq as a keeper long term. Lets face it none of the regular keepers are that good. At least we can get another batsman in and Taufeeq might turn out to be a better keeper than you think? A bit of a random thought but you can not bleme me because for years we have been marred by bad keepers who have let us down!!

Taufeeq isn't a specialist. Asad Shafiq has kept in domestic cricket too. For tests you need someone who specializes the position in this category. Adnan is a magnificent keeper and is handy with the bat. Not as reliable as someone in the middle or a typical tail ender. He's not terrible to say the least.

he is a decent keeper - I remember him today him diving leg side to catch a ball.

    he seems pretty athletic.

I caught some of the highlights and he really struggled when Ajmal came on to bowl.

because he is not a regular keeper....he needs some time....am sure he will be fine.

It is difficult to read Ajmal...I remember Saqi, Mushy doing signals before bowling to Moin to help him in keeping.

Test cricket always requires a specialist keeper and batting comes a distant second attribute so it would be unwise to think of getting a makeshift in tests. For ODIs / T20s, yes there is a possiblity but if Taufeeq is to be considered, he will need to surpass Umar Akmal who will always bring out a better CV for the role.

Lets bring back Umar Akmal into the test side this way. Then we'll score quick runs be able to achieve targets and allow the opposition too as well.

On the highlights they thought lets include his athleticism to make him look good.

He was dropping the ball when it was swinging more times than he was taking it. Don't even ask how clueless he looked with Ajmal.

    He was struggling.

I think Younus Khan would be a better option if Adnan has to go off.

Let's not typecast the thing that we saw today with Taufeeq Umar being given the job to keep wickets today in absence of Adnan Akmal who's got a hairline fracture and will now be seen if he does take further part in this match mostly he'll be needed to keep wickets.

It's a one off thing and just that he kept wickets let's not get carried away and want him to keep in the future as he may keep once in a while if a similar situation arises but nothing as a long term thing at all.

Wicket keeping is a special position in cricket and not everyone can do it and it's requirement is to be very agile and make sure your able to keep to any type of bowler be that a 90mph to a leg spinner who can turn it miles.

    How'd Adnan get injured?

    Forgive my ignorance.

karachigirl, Adnan was hit on his hand by a short ball from Fernando.

On topic, it would be knee-jerk to suggest Taufeeq as our permanent test wicket keeper. I would have said that even before watching him. But after watching him, I wouldn't even be comfortable if he was keeping in T20s. To be fair he's a brilliant slip catcher and good overall fielder but keeping is a speciality.

Adnan has shown in the past 18 months that he's a world class keeper. I can count only 1 'blunder' from him in that period. Also, he was on the verge of equalling the world record for the most catches in an innings against NZ and would have done it had the umpire not made a mistake. In terms of batting ability, I think he's got potential to average consistently above 30 in tests. In the current situation, that is more than enough (as he's a great keeper).

he doesn't even deserve a place as opener, let alone playing as keeper.

    good joke btw.

Why wasn't Asad Shafique keeping wickets? Someone who has regularly kept wickets in domestic cricket. Strange decision.

I'm amused at lack of protection offered by GM Original Limited Edition gloves, they are certainly not that weak
