Pakistan won the first 2 matches with score line
    against Japan 7-0
    against Malaysia 4-1

So practically it's just 2 matches against Korea and India to win the Asia Cup & get the entry ticket for WC.

We didn't qualify for WC 2014 and this was the last chance. We had to win this Asia Cup.

Congratulations India for booking a berth for the World Cup in 2014. India beat a strong Malaysian team and its home crowd 2-0 in the Asia Cup semi-final to storm into the finals to play S.Korea.

Celebration time s2k Sir John TM Riddle Saurav bystander

S.Korea knocked out Pakistan in the semi-finals. Pakistan for the first time in 42 years have failed to book a place in World Cup hockey.

Raf Pragmatic it is a sad indictment for both India and Pakistan --that once hockey super powers are now reduced to fight for a place in World Cup. I mean we are celebrating "qualifying" for the World Cup.

Congratulations India and commiserations Pakistan hockey team.

India looked the top team in the tournament--the only side which is unbeaten so far and also the only side which defeated the number 1 team in the competition South Korea earlier in the group stage.

I wish Indian hockey team all the very best in the finals. Go India Go.

    Cheers.

the goras made all the changes possible to suit their style of play. The Indian sub continent was known for its stick work and short passes, but those days have long gone. The last golden era of Pak hockey was when they had Kaleem ullah and Sami ullah playing the wings and Hasan Sardar playing centre.Glory days long gone now. :shrug

Superb analysis and I completely agree with you. First they changed the playing surface from natural grass to synthetic surface. Then there is this emphasis on penalty corners rather than field goals. Indians and Pakistani's were the finest exponents of the legerdemain of the wrists--conjuring magic with their sticks in controlling and manouvering the ball. Now its just brutal display of physical strength. The aesthetic beauty is lost. But every now and then whenever India and Pakistan do well, they bring back those old memories of Asian hockey laced with beauty, grace and pure skill.

Pakistan won a whopping 4 World Cup's --the highest of all the countries--and this despite their failure in the last decade and a half in winning any World Cup.

These changes make me think in terms of cricket. It is like forcing test cricket into T-20 with shortened boundaries and encouraging slogging rather than placing the ball, discouraging bouncers etc., I know its a bad analogy but that is the best that I can come up with.

Exactly. This is what i was trying to convey to Saurav in the thread about Gavaskar, that the quality of play is dropping every day in order to make the game more marketable to the masses, who just flock the stands to have a rollicking time and as a result the sport has become much the poorer for it.

    Pakistanis threaten protest over hockey

    Updated: 23:23, Tuesday September 10, 2013 [source-skynews au]

Retired Pakistani stars on Tuesday threatened to burn their medals and protest publicly unless the government steps in to reverse a spectacular decline in the national game, field hockey.
Pakistan, four-times world champions with three Olympic golds, failed to win the Asia Cup earlier this month and so failed to qualify for next year's World Cup to be held in The Netherlands.
The failure sparked a nation-wide protest by fans and a group of Olympians demanded that the prime minister remove incumbent officials at the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF).
'Prime minister Nawaz Sharif is the patron of the PHF and he must take some time out of his busy schedule to address the serious and fatal slump in our national sport,' former captain and coach Islahuddin Siddiqui told a news conference.
'The current federation has failed to produce results in the last five years and we now have nothing left in our hockey, this federation must go or else we will protest,' demanded Islah.
Another Olympian, Ayaz Mahmood, threatened to burn his medals.
'For us hockey is our pride, life and everything and if nothing is done to improve our hockey, I will burn my Olympic gold medal,' said Mahmood, a member of Pakistan's last Olympic gold winning team in 1984.
Pakistan's nose-dive slump saw them finish last in the 2010 World Cup in India.
They finished seventh in the 2012 London Olympics and eighth in Beijing four years earlier -- their worst ever placing.
The current PHF chairman is Qasim Zia, an Olympian and a member of the Pakistan People's Party tipped to be sacked after his party lost May elections to Sharif's Pakistan Muslim League-N.
Hundreds of fans also staged protests in Karachi, Faisalabad and Rawalpindi last week, demanding a change of guard at the PHF.

Pakistan's ranking used to be 9 from where we gradually came up to no.5. Now we have gone down to no.8. Worse at it's best.

Didn't follow Pakistan Hockey for a while. But that's a great news. We beat India and surprisingly Japan played really well to qualify for the final! More surprising is that this time the host was Japan and I had no idea at all. Yet, it's not enough to heal the pain of being ineligible to play upcoming WC.
