Pakistan drew a hard fought series with England 2-2, Australia lost 3-0 to Srilanka and the West Indies vs India match at Port of Spain ended in a draw. All the conditions were met and Pakistan have been crowned the no.1 Test team for the first time ever in Test cricket history.

Pakistan’s rise to the no.1 rank started back in October 2010. The Pakistani squad for the South Africa series was announced on October 6th which marked the return of Misbah Ul Haq; a day later Misbah was named the Test captain, a brave decision taken by the often criticised chairman Ijaz Butt.

At the time Pakistan were ranked no.6 in the test rankings with 83 rating points by October 13th 2010.

It was during this time, in the aftermath of the spot fixing scandal, that Pakistan’s fan following was at all time low. So it was with little fanfare that a totally new team, with a new captain and with little fan support, ended up drawing a Test Series 0-0 with the No.2 Test ranked team at that time. It could be argued that this was one of the best test series Pakistan had ever played in, as this was the series where Pakistan’s journey to no.1 started under Misbah ul Haq.

What makes Pakistan’s rise to the no.1 rank more special is the fact that from 2009 onwards, Pakistan never played a single test match at its home ground. This was all the more impressive since all test teams bully oppositions at home whilst their away records are terrible. Many of the debutants from 2009 onwards haven’t even played a test game in front of a home crowd. All of Pakistan’s wins have come in away series. Plus, to achieve the no.1 ranking they even drew a test series 2-2 against England in England, where many fans were not fancying Pakistan’s chance to win a single game.

It is ironic how the Test mace will be making its way into a country where cricket itself cannot be played due to terrorism.

It's likely that the Test mace will only be held by Pakistan for a few weeks. The test table ratings point difference is of single digit numbers; with Pakistan now having to face New Zealand and Australia in their own backyards, and with India having a long season of home games, (where they are known to be a dominant team). So the odds are against Pakistan holding onto the no.1 rank for long.

None the less, being ranked no.1 in Test Cricket still feels great. Not only because this is Pakistan’s first time to officially hold that status but because they did it without home advantage in a cricketing era where home advantage is King.

Test Cricket might not have returned to Pakistan but the Test Mace will still make its way into the country and even if it’s held in Pakistan for a single day, it would still matter a lot.
