DUBAI: Pakistan captain Sarfraz Ahmed was full of praise for Australian opener Usman Khawaja who snatched a draw from the jaws of defeat for his team on the fifth and final day of the first Test in Dubai on Thursday.

Khawaja’s 141 led the fightback by Australia while he was ably supported by Travis Head who made 72 and skipper Tim Paine who finished with 61 not out. Australia finished at 362-8, exactly 100 runs from the target.

“I think I have seen one of the best innings in Test cricket, especially in the fourth innings,” said

“The way he batted he took Australia to the draw. He batted very well, he played most of his shots, even the reverse sweep, so his was a brilliant knock.”

Pakistan’s leg-spinner Yasir Shah, who went wicketless in the first innings, took 4-114 to raise Pakistan’s hopes of a win.

Sarfraz said Yasir should be given some margin as he has been Pakistan’s match-winner.

“Yes, you can say that he played a Test after one year so you have to give him some margin. Yes, he did bowl in first-class cricket but bowling in Tests is different. This was his first match so hopefully he will come back in the next game, he is our main bowler so we should not let him fall and I hope he will bowl well,” said Sarfraz.

Sarfraz believes Bilal Asif was effective in the second inning because the pitch was fresh so he got pace and bounce, but he could not change his strategy in the fourth inning.

“Look, day by day you have to bowl differently, he got bounce and pace and this why he got wickets, in the fourth innings you have to bowl with variations. Test cricket is new for him so he doesn’t have much idea, he has also not played too much first-class cricket so its an experience for him to bowl on the fifth day,

“If you bowl tight and maiden overs then it creates pressure. He has shown that he is a good bowler and can do well for Pakistan in future

Sarfraz told that he was confident of winning the Test, but the Aussie opener Usman Khawaja took the game away from them with his resilient ton.

“Look when we came today we were confident to win the Test, we were in a good position and that’s the beauty of Test cricket. Khawaja batted well, no praise is enough for his batting and then Head also supported him. Khawaja played all his shots which are usually tough on the fifth day for a batsman, sweep and reverse sweep so its frustrating.

“Test cricket is beauty lies in this that a team draws from a position of losing after a thrilling contest. We did our efforts but unfortunately, the result did not come our way”
