Does not have to be your favourite and I bet along with me you have many genres of music that you enjoy and listen to.

I've been listening to a few older songs recently. I'm enjoying Sound of Silence by Simon and Garfunkel. The lyrics are interesting instead of repetetive which is unusual for a western song, especially these days...

I don't really listen to music but as it plays in public places I hear some of it and the vast majority is garbage. There are 3 or 4 really good songs I can remember though, I dunno what they're called but they have interesting lyrics and are generally more understated

No problem - Nusrat's brilliance is available for all of us to share.

I'm thinking of creating a NFAK appreciation upon this site as I have done upon PakPassion, but I'm still contemplating.

Aziz Mian's masterpiece Jannat Mujhe Mile Na Mile. What beautiful poetry:

In hindsight, it appears I was extremely hasty in labelling his Qawwalis "a random cacophony of ear-aching sounds" in the NFAK appreciation thread.

This is because I always wondered why Aziz Mian was rated so highly (even being awarded the Pride of Performance award from Pakistan in 1989) when I thought it was perfectly clear he had no acoustical value at all.

And how bloody wrong I was by drawing this inclusion, which I realised once I was playing the Mein Sharabi Qawwali alongside a tab depicting an image of Aziz Mian, along with the YouTube video of Jannat Mujhe Mile Na Mile - I realised that the person performing in Mein Sharabi didn't correspond to the other two images of Aziz Mian!

The Mein Sharabi production that I heard was from Imran Aziz Mian - his son, not the legend himself! Now I understand as to why that particular production wasn't euphonious at all (my description was apt I feel, considering its uncoordinated nature).

After this, I've finally learnt of why he is rated so highly. He truly has both a melodious voice and some beautiful poetry (in fact, if I'm not mistaken he is the only prominent Qawwal to write the majority of his Qawwali material himself). Have a look at these powerful lyrics from the aforementioned Qawwali:

"Woh jahannum bhi mujhe de to karoon shukr ada
Koi apna hi samajh kar to sazaa deta hai."

Even if he sends me to hell, I will still be grateful,
Since we punish only those who we count as our own.

ElRaja, don't you find music without any lyrics a tad dull?

That sounds pretty good but I prefer a track with some form of significance.

SOPL which track did i post without any lyrics, the lyrics to africa are great altho the remix loops only partial lyrics of the original, so open to interpretation....

that not withstanding i completely disagree with the idea that music without lyrics lacks significance, music is far more intrinsicly communicative than lyrics, even young babies are born with developed reactions to music which says something of its significance to the human psyche.

the state of trance, or "haal" bought about by music is well known across cultures irrespective of lyrics or language, the sufi saints of yesteryear knew this well and to this day the music played around sufi shrines and darbars is what in european terms in known as trance, rhythmic drum beats over laid by repetitive vocal chanting, synths and chords.

close your eyes, relax, imagine and tell me the following does not elicit an emotional response on some level in you
