When will Babar Azam significantly contribute in a win against a good side?

Babar has been in international cricket for about 3-4 years now, he has represented the team in 100+ international matches, plays at the key position of number 3, he's not a youngster anymore by any means. Still I'm yet to see him significantly contribute in winning a major game against a good side.

When have we ever chased down 300 (ODIs) or 200 (T20s) with him contributing significantly? When has he ever batted a good team out of the game? When has he ever saved Pakistan out of a tough situation?

The more I see of him, the more he seems like a batsman who only scores 40s-50s against good teams and then starts scoring centuries when he's up against the WIndies and SLanka.

People will understand this wrongly, this doesn't mean I want him out of the side. He's amongst the top 3 batsmen in Pakistan if not THE best. But for someone of his capability, of his talent, of his calibre, he should be driving Pakistan home in big games.

So we should drop him? Yeh let’s do that and bring Sauda in.

His ultimate role seems like a solid contributor but perhaps not a match winner.

For that to happen, he needs to develop 5th gear, the power game, which he doesn't possess atm.

I am still waiting to see a BIG 100 from him in a chase to win game for his side.

Said this before. He is a good builder but not a winner. Need to bring that aspect into his game. These are the marginal things to make you a great batsman.

Don't think it will happen anytime soon. He's the best batsman we have though.

He is a batsman who can play any shot in the book but unfortunately not a match winner YET. When he learn this trait he will be massive for Pakistan. Seems also a bit of selfish to me. Yesterday after power play the guy just stopped attempting even to hit a boundary. If he had continued in the same way as he was batting in PP overs Pakistan would not fall short by 6 runs in the end.

This is always the case. He scores freely in PP overs and then just nudge around.

Said before it seems like he play for averages rather than taking on the bowlers after settling in.

I kinda agree with OP. Babar is a good batsman but he needs to make the leap and become a great batsman and start finishing games for us because clearly he has the potential to be great.

Babar doesn’t have AB, Dravid, Tendulkar, Sehwag, Gambhir, Dhoni around him now does he.

He’s a bit conservative but that’s good in the long run, yes he hasn’t won a single match on his own but in matches Pakistan have won Babar has made contribution.

people complaining about him being selfish /slow.
maybe that's the role he has been given by the captain and coach.
he's more of a sheet anchor to the team whose supposed to play till the 15th over with a S/R of 125-135

It all depends on who is mentoring him, Who is he going to learn from, Sarfu? .. Malik? As of now I dont see any world class player in the squad, who can work on his technique. He is a good find, He needs to work on his strike rate cause its declining every year. Clearly indicates the culture in Pakistan squad is to sustain your wicket and place!

Probably never, will make a 50 and our fans will cream themselves and call him the best batsman that we have. Has improved big time but still to win a single match for Pakistan

Sentiments in this thread in favour of Babar is one of the main reason why are we struggling as a nation. Its the mindset and insecurity which is the biggest hurdle in way of achieving greatness.

Almost everyone agrees that babar is a massive talent but he can achieve much more than what he is achieving now..just need to be bit more ruthless and selfless.

No one is questioning his ability but maximising or using it to the most.

Since we are on this weird topic

Imran Khan - WC Winning Captain
YK - T20 WC Winning Captain
Afridi - MOTM In the Semi Finals and Final of a WC
Umar Gul - Leading Wicket Taker in the WC
Fakhar Zaman - MOTM CT and Match winning 100 + 3 Consecutive 50 before that .

My point still stands. Babar is yet to win Pakistan any game of note. Thanks

Not the match winner like Warner, Smith, Kohli or Rohit.
He's decent but he's not the enforcer in batting.

With time can go two ways. Either average drops to 30s and he becomes the average Pakistani batsman but with pleasing shots or he stays the batsman he is but plays more to the situation and finishes games off.
I have a feeling a season in county cricket will take him to the next level

    wait....you just proved his point

You mentioned Imran Khan and Younis for their WC win but not Sarfraz for his CT win

ps: Amir won us the CT, not Fakhar. Truth is bitter

If he can bat like this it proves his slow ODI innings was for individual gain.

Can't fault him for the last few months has been really good.

You can play two Kohli's in this team and they won't be winning anything anyway. Can't bail out this moronic batting line.

He played well today. Don't blame him for what happened today.

Talat was really poor, was just premeditating shots.

Then people would’ve said he is playing for his 100. There are other players in this side too who should’ve finished the game

He is the premier batsman of the team. His job is to win games for the team. Yes not a culprit in today's loss but him not finishing games is an issue. For batting understanding check how many 100's had Inzi scored in won tests for Pakistan out of his total test 100's.
