I've been reading so many posts, tweets all over the internet lately on how bad the selection is for the Pakistan team lately.

Ok, you're the selector now. Pick your fifiteen squad for Tests and ODs

    Go!

theres no quick fix. pakistan cricket has been killed by a series of inept selectors, overrated coaches, sifarshi board members and politically appointed chairmen as a reward for political corruption. we are so far behind the rest of the world in terms of technology, work ethic and performance culture, have no bench, and have allowed the best talent in the country languish.

the result is essentially no talent. its been spoken about for ages on these threads, so no point in repeating now that asad, azhar, imam, shan, babar have all been failed experiments in varying degrees in test cricket, whilst Usman, Fawad, abid, saad have been repetitively ignored.

to fix it it needs starting from scratch, which means developing and grooming the existing best talent in the country, and replacing the has beens as and when you can, all whilst battling the upcoming media storm that will be a constant overhead drone because of the inevitability of constant failure of the team.

I have and would recommend switching off your TVs for a couple of years.

to pick the squad, more to the point of this thread: my view I expressed in a post a few days ago:

    1) find out who the top FC performers are on a) career or last 5-10 years to get a sense of relative potential skill set and b) combine that with top performers on recent form over the past two or three years. so you have a measure of both class and form.
    3) weight those two measures depending upon results and standard deviation - favouring consistency.
    4) draw up a short list of the best proven talent on an apples to apples basis.
    5) eliminate those players who have already been selected but have failed.

use any resulting squad as your best pool of players, use whatever skills you think you have for identifying talent (no one globally has ever demonstrated a consistent ability to do this from amateur fans to professional players of administrators afaik) to pick between them. that process doesnt ensure picking the best talent, but its better than any other single method. if a player selected using this method fails after a fair number of chances (30-50 innings in whatever format), move on to the next on the list.

simple, defensible, fair, meritocratic and provably effective.

    #endthread

use that method independently for each format, and for the love of God, stop ruining talent and careers by picking players for the wrong format. for example, babar and shan should be the first two names on an ODI squad list, but have as yet been unable to demonstrate they can play the long format. simple and obvious.

without seeing all the current numbers, and from memory it would look something like this:

    1. abid (40)
    2. fakhar (40)
    3. saad (45)
    4. haris (48)
    5. alam (56)
    6. Salahuddin (47)
    7. Rizwan (44)

= total expected contribution from top 7 of 320 (fc sum of averages)

    vs current:

    1. shan (34)
    2. Azhar (39)
    3. haris (48)
    4. asad (41)
    5. babar (38)
    6. ifti (40)
    7. Rizwan (44)

    (imam (35))

= total expected contribution from top 7 of 284 (fc sum of averages).

Tests mein there is tie between Imran Khan sr and Usman Shinwari imo. If Abbas and Shaheen get injured for too much workload then Rahat Ali and Imran Khan can replace them and Naseem Shah will obviously be the 3rd pacer!!

    Zeeshan Malik (all formats)
    Zafar Gohar (tests)
    Umer Khan (LOs)
    Amad Butt (LOs)
    Haris Rauf (LOs)

All these are worth giving chances RIGHT NOW. Also, once picked play them properly, not discard them for no reason like Nasim.

Has the squad for slanka series been announced? I dont think he should be dropped. In my opinion, only 2 pacers could be dropped - Musa Khan and Imran Khan sr for Rahat Ali and Usman Shinwari.
